We Really Don't Get IT

The latest indignity:

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The Kansas City Royals are attempting to sign Doug Mientkiewicz, the Gold Glove first baseman best known for taking the ball from the final out of Boston's World Series win in 2004.
Why?

This makes no sense.

And save the Sweeney trade rumors which this seems a sign of. Trading Sweeney + overpaying for Minky still = bad bad deal.

I just don't see how Allard can be thinking this way, given what he's seen with his very eyes with guys like Ibanez, Emil, D.J. Carasco, etc. And in Minky's case, he's not just at a cheap to field decently position, he's actively not good.

What else is there to say?

I'm expecting three years $15 million at the least. Well, at least this way Doug can maybe enter the Hard to Spell Hall of Fame as a Royal.

Im giong to have to throw up a little disagreement in part about the Doug analysis.  While is is most likely true that his numbers are not the greatest on offense, and that it is completely retarded to go after another 1st baseman, Doug has consistenetly played with great defense.  But once again we are overloaded at the position as it is, there are only so many guys that can DH in one game.

I consider this rumor a personal affront.
The best part is Allard's quote that he's still going to play Sweeney plenty at first base.  That means we'd be paying Doug to be a DH much of the time.

I understand that Allard's got $20m burning a hole in his pocket, but how can he look at the team and think "Man, what we need is another backup 1B."  Isn't that what Stairs is on the team for?  How much is Doug's occasionally great glove at first really worth?

And speaking of Ibanez, it has always puzzled me under the Allard/Glass regime that we will not fork over the $4m or so it takes to sign Randa or Ibanez but we're more than happy to give more money to Eli Marrero and Mientkiewicz.  It makes no sense.

Minky
He was a personal favorite of mine and many Twins fans when he was in Minnesota, even into the later years of his Twins career when he was pretty much worthless just b/c we watched him come up through the system, he was our guy, etc...

I honestly don't understand what his appeal is to any other team.  His glovework is overstated and  he's hit like a backup middle infielder at a corner position for three years now.  Here's hoping this is just a rumor, b/c he's the farthest thing from what you need.

that being said...
Even though I liked watching the guy play, we (the Twins) hung onto him about a season and a half too long ourselves...
