Poll: Who will be the Royals Closer in 2007???

From the Diaries...

There are a number of canidates for the closing job on the Royals. Who should it be?

Joe Nelson - 32 RHP, journeyman reliever that inherited the job from the erratic and wild Ambiorix Burgos towards the end of the season. He has a 90 mph fastball ad his out pitch is his changeup. He had 9 saves as the head of a closer by committee but has been released by numerous clubs and spent much of his career in the minors.

Ambiorix Burgos - 22 RHP, was pulled multiple times from the closer positison because of inconsistency. He does have a fastball that peaks at 98 - 100 mph but loses the abailty to locate during crunch time might be due to his youth. He's obviously not ready.

Joel Peralta - 30 RHP, a late bloomer that has been reasonably successful in the middle innings. I think any movement form his MR spot might regress him back to what he was 3 years ago, a minor leaguer.

Andy Sisco - 23 LHP, a huge 6'10 pitcher that can throw the ball 96 mph or higher. Most closers aren't lefty and there has been talk of coverting him to starter but he seemed to regress in 2006 after a fine 2005 season. He also seems to fold during the late inning situations he has been in. He needs more time and organizational instruction to be considered for anything more than long relief or even spot start work.

Ryan Braun - 26 RHP, was once thought as the closer of the future for the Royals but a knee injury stole most of his 2005 season away from him. In 2006, he gained what he lost and rebounded to have a great 2006 minor league campaign. He works consistently at 98 mph and has been known to hit 100. Braun isn't afraid to go after hitters with his late moving fastball, "terminator" (from Justin Huber) curveball, or his nasty slider. Despite his late season performance in the majors, I personally think that Braun, if inserted as the closer at the beginning of the year, will excel and be in any rookie of the year conversation for 2007. He reminds me a lot of Chris Ray.

Can I say
"all of the above"

I like Nelson, but I dont feel like the organization is sold on him as the guy... one bad week could bring back Burgos, who will probably also struggle, etc

of course, if the  royals only have a save opp once a week nelson may stick around longer

Breaking news
The New York Yankees announced today that they have acquired right-handed pitcher Humberto Sanchez, right-handed pitcher Kevin Whelan and right-handed pitcher Anthony Claggett from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for outfielder Gary Sheffield.

wow
I didn't think they would really dump Sheffield.  I don't look forward to facing him more next season.

List makes you realize how awful the options are
Just throw Nelson out there again if no trades and let Braun grow into it

You know...
for a closer to be necessary we've gotta get a lead first.

Any of em...
One of those guys is destined to have a great year...all that talent at least one sisco?burgos?braun?  gotta leave peralta middle innings, might make sisco starter, I would make him weight train his balls off and turn him into randy johnson...make burgos a try and run with it, and then nelson to switch off (old times sports say go with Nelson first because he deserves it, but u gotta let Burgos a try just like maybe 2 or 3 times), I say braun's the best bet...injury and still make it...he'll have grit...I GUARANTEE one has a absolutely amazing year...like say an era of 2.90! and like 30 saves see u in October 07 when ur laughing...ummmm...we only need starting pitching please no other moves dayton!

How cool would it be...
to get Jason Schmidt?  how bout Ted Lilly or El Duque or Gil Meche...you think we'll try to pay someone like 2 yrs. 10 mil?  I vote we try for David Wells...yeah and then get Fatt Stairs back...we would be unstopable, then maybe we could revive Rich Garces

how bout...
Woody Williams...I think that guy is a stud...3.65 era for only 5 mil last year...I would pay him 3 yrs 16mil...man that guy is tough, I pray he doesn't go back to the cards, he'll prolly stay in the NL to bat tho...we really only need one quality starter and not like 3 crappy free agents...surely perez or someone will emerge with us...just need a good 1 and a good 2 and we'll win 80 games, for crying out loud didn't STL win only 83 games and took the World Series!

Nelson
Does Nelson have very good stuff? I really don't remember...

by Will McDonald on Nov 12, 2006 3:49 PM EST reply actions

No
no he doesn't. Which is why he's been a journeyman reliver, released, and in and out of the minors for his entire MLB career.
