Juan Uribe accused of shooting two men near his home in October. Maybe everyone saw this but somehow I missed it. Charges have been revived.
From ESPN: "I'm completely innocent," Uribe told ESPNdeportes.com. "They're trying to extort me because they know I play in the major leagues. They sent word to me that if I give them 1,000,000 pesos [about 33,000 U.S. dollars], all of this will go away."
"The men (Uribe) are suspected of shooting and wounding a Dominican farmer, Antonio Gonzalez Perez, and a captain in the Italian Navy, Dondolin Alessandro, with a pistol and a shotgun when the pair walked too close to Uribe's jeep around midnight Friday, police said."
Shocked to see this since according to Hawk and DJ, Uribe is a quality hard working guy. Except when he does his homerun bat toss and styles on grounders by playing them off to the side (Berroa does the same thing, apparently it's considered cool in the Dominican).
$33K seems a little light doesn't it? I guess it sounds more impressive when rounded off to a million pesos. Initially charges were dropped, but the Dominican government has reopened the case against Uribe as a result of new evidence brought by the farmer, so perhaps a few million more pesos are in order. I'm sure the Dominican legal system is completely above board.
Wonder why the Italian navy guy was hanging with the Dominican farmer? Lots of odd facets to this story, not sure what to make of it, but thought readers would find it interesting. Sorry if everyone knew about this already. Will be interesting to see how the White Sox handle this. Maybe they'll get desparate and seek a deal for Berroa.
