Around SBN: Clippers Need To Realize That Spurs Are The Anti-Grizzlies

The new signings in perspective. It's a good thing.

Great thoughts on the flurry of signings from "JQ". Remember, Bale is no scrub either, thats a big money signing as well. Royals Review will be posting a full recap of the moves this weekend. Bale stats here.

So, a lot of big signings this week.  I see a lot of people divided about the  recent activity.

(rubbing our hands together) What if we overpaid?'

When that thought enters your mind just reply to it like this.

"Who cares.  It's not my money.  It's David Glass' money.  And David Glass is kinda a jackass who has made all of us Royals fans suffer quite a bit over the last four years.  He doesn't even come to many games and lives in Arkansas.  Damn, he owes us."

With the revenue sharing money now stabilized for another five years and the extra income from the new television deal, plus all the free upgrades to the stadium paid for by tax dollars, there really is no reason Glass can't be feeding the Royals a payroll in the area of $70-$80M for the next five years.  The Royals have an inexpensive core right now and the salaries of the young guys will not really start to escalate the payroll until 2008.

Gilgamesh, or any other tier two starter, was going to cost about $10M/per.  That is the new going rate, and that rate will probably never go down.  This is what it costs to hire a decent free agent starting pitcher.  The Royals needed a solid starter (well, in truth they needed a few) and this is what it was going to cost.  Glass paid it.  We'll have a better team next year.  I hope Glass pays for more solid players.  I want to see the Royals not suck for the first time in a long while and if it costs David Glass some money then good.  He is sorta evil and has not treated us fans well for years.

Give me a team to both love and have hopes for!  Like a father loves his crippled child, I'd love the Royals no matter how badly they play, but wouldn't it be nice to see that lame child walk again! The damnest part of it all is that Papa Glass could have afforded his surgery years ago and is only now finally willing to take care of his responsibility.

Remember.  Glass got his money from Walmart.  It should have been seized on principle as ill gotten years ago and given to a worthy charity ... like, I don't know, maybe the Royals.  These signings may not have been the absolute best way to build the team, but this demonstration of serious financial support lent to an effort to build a competitive team has been a long time in coming.

More serious reply
While I am glad to see them spend Glass' money - I still think it's OK to criticize what can be argued to be reckless spending. Just being happy that they are spending does not address the opportunity cost of spending unwisely - you still ultimately need to get more value for each payroll dollar than the other teams, or you will not ever beat them out.

I will concede that we are in a period of uberinflation of player salaries - so it may be hard to quantify exactly how much (or even if) the contracts we gave out are excessive.

KC Reality
We probably need to overspend right now to attract players being courted by more attractive clubs.  I think Meche probably wouldn't have signed with the Royals if they only matched his other offers (4yr/$40M).  The Royals needed to sweeten the deal to get him to submit.

Hopefully next year the Royals will not be in such a situation, provided 2007 demonstrates the club is likely to be relevant in 2008+.

Baird estimated the Royals needed to pay about 20% more for free agents which other teams were also interested in due to the sad state of the team.  I see no reason to doubt this estimate.

Didn't You Hear?
It's a "market correction."  Apparently, the last few years of collus--, I mean, fiscal responsibility by the owners following the A-Rod years has come to an end.  Remember last year when we were willing to overspend on Paul Byrd by offering an extra $250,000 a year?  At least this is overspending with flair.

If this is the first year of a market change favoring the players, it's more than possible that Meche's salary will be typical for a mid-rotation guy by 2009 and for a back-end guy by 2011.  If that's so, we're just playing the same game as everyone else, just maybe a year earlier.

"overspending with flair"
I love it.  Just like when I splurge for Boulevard Wheat instead of Coors Light.

If only Boulevard was available here in SoCal...

Signing in Perspective
Yes, cheer up, Royals fans! It's not your money, and Moore signed Batman!...oh, wait...John Bale, not Christian Bale, my bad.

I love "Gilgameche"
We are gonna have some fun with that nickname this year.

oh man
if I had actually done my reading for my history class, I would make some sort of whitty and fun comment about the tale of gilgamesh and all that jazz....but alas, I am a slacker. Guess the Royal Gilgameche will have to give me my own tale to read about, yea?

Big flood. Big boat.
Kind of a familiar tale.

"Gilgameche" is great reference, but a little unweildy for me.  I'm going with "The Epic"--a nod to the name, but with far more application.

I feel like I just eat Thankgiving dinner....
I am very happy and full.  The Royals got two quality starting pitchers, a maybe quality closer, and a maybe quality reliever to shore up the bullpen.  Granted, I didn't get that piece of banana chocolate cream pie that I wanted.  In other words, the Royals did not get a new shortstop.  But, I am full and happy and ready for the 2007 season.

So, bring it on... Go Blue...
