Royals Acquire Odalis Perez

Wow. Just a completely random move from the Royals, as Dayton Moore grabs a former Brave in the 29 year old Perez (4-4, 6.83 ERA).

Royals Get: Odalis Perez, Blake Johnson and Julio Pimentel

Dodgers Get: Elmer Dessens

I'm not exactly excited about Perez, but this is a good example of a guy having a lower price tag than what he might offer going forward: he's having a horrible year and recently melted down on his own team. I'll take a 29 year old starter with the potential to be average st some point over a 35 year old who probably won't.

The best thing about the deal is that the Royals get three arms for a 35 year old reliever who's having his best year in recent memory. We'll miss you Elmer Dessens. We'll always have memories of "Boyfriend of the Day" honor on July 20th.

As for Blake Johnson and Julio Pimentel, may I admit I've never heard of them? (Sorry I don't follow Dodger farmhands after they folded the Albuquerque Dukes). You can find Johnson's split stats here and Pimentel's here.

Lastly, there's the matter of money, as Odalis is making $8.75 million this season.

More later... Wow, Moore's not wasting time.

--------

UPDATE: As you probably know, the Royals have traded Graffy to the Brewers for Jorge de la Rosa of the Brewers. de la Rosa has an 8.60 ERA in 30 innings this season. For his career he has a 6.23 ERA in 95.1 innings.

Wow again, I can't keep up with Moore these days.

Perez
yeah I just saw the story right now...gotta admit, pretty good value.  we trade dessens (35 years old), get perez, two prospects, and cash.  i know buddy bell's going to struggle with who to turn to in those tight middle innings...but let's face it, buddy bell's gonna struggle no matter what happens

Bring on Mr. Charity!
I look forward to seeing him institute another free ticket program for local inner-city youth, then petulantly discontinue it when he's not sufficiently sainted!

I kinda want to hate him...
but it's just too funny.

not that this matters
but our relief pitching could be fairly brutal, especially if anyone else from the pen goes

But we've got Leo!
I believe Nunez is coming up for tonight's game

Nunez
Is the scariest thought I can think of.  I'd rather see Albie Lopez get another chance.

I heard
The Dodgers threw in 8M to help cover Perez's contract for this year and next.

Perez
Perez is at least as good a body to fill a starting pitcher slot as, oh, Jose Lima, and the other two guys were in the upper teens in Baseball America's preseason Dodgers prospect list- worth flipping Dessens for theirownselves. Not a bad afternoon's dumping.

im a big
fan of this trade- but what will buddy do without his mr everything?

Nunez
Nunez has a good arm and has been quite effective (if still wild) at Omaha. I'd much prefer to see him out there at this point than Dessens (who sucked all month) anyway.

Sounds like a decent trade
Odalis Perez, 2 prospects, AND cash for a 35-year old journeyman pitcher???  I'll take this deal any day.

Now let's trade Sanders and fire Bell.  Billy Martin used to say that he was good for at least 20 wins a season because of his managing style.  Well, Bell is good for at least 20 losses...

It's true that Buddy doesn't have much to work with, but from what I've seen, he's made a lot of inexplicable moves in the year and a half he's been the skipper.  T-Long anyone???

From ESPN, rest assured Royals Fans
"I like Buddy Bell," Moore said. "He's an old-time baseball guy, and those are the people I feel comfortable with. He and I speak the same language."

Great, at the very least we now know Buddy Bell has a basic understanding of the English language. I was hoping something like "Buddy, your ass is fired" wouldnt get lost in translation.

FYI
Graffanino was just traded to Milwaukee for a 25 year old LHP.. Jorge De La Rosa I think is the name.

by antidecaf on Jul 25, 2006 8:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If this is true ...we just got a power arm.
De La Rosa... has a power arm and is still very young.  The Brewers rushed him up after a trade.  I think that he came from Oakland in the Ginter trade.  I think???  But, he has a rocket for an arm.  Yes, we are starting to stockpile arms...

He could be in our bullpen now.....

If anybody cares...
We had a game tonight... it is now in the 5th... 4-2 Orioles.  Redman has shut them down the last two innings and Teahen just it a two run scoring homer.  Yup, he now leads the team with 10 homers.

Has anyone else had trouble getting on tonight?

A real pain...  anyway ...lets go Blue...

hey grudz
yea... no seperate game thread tonight... I had to run to dinner with my Dad, and also kinda wanted to keep the Perez trade front and center

Nice outing from Redman

Tie this up Teahen
NOW anyone confirmed the money aspect of the Odalis trade

by royalsreview on Jul 25, 2006 10:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Teahen rules
And from what I have read we pay Dessens 1.7 mil for this year and next, while LA pays the complete salary of Perez this year and next.

by antidecaf on Jul 25, 2006 10:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

GO ROYALS!!!
Teahen with 5 RBI's, Costa with a run scoring triple!! Now we have to hope our depleted bullpen can hold this one...

by antidecaf on Jul 25, 2006 10:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

the only downside
Redman's ERA is back to 5.03

Can someone explain...
Buddy's little double switch strategy?

by Mik on Jul 25, 2006 10:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

no, not at all
baffling I guess he wanted to make sure he got emil up ASAP? I dunno

by royalsreview on Jul 25, 2006 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm assuming that you mean the whole
pitcher in the lineup thing? This is way after the matter, but my dad had to explain this to me, as I wasn't listening to the game when it happened.

When you replace a position player with the DH, you revoke the DH position and instead must put your pitcher into the lineup, which is why German and Brown went up for Nelson and Redman.

As Minky got hurt from a crap throw from Berroa...Matt Stairs was moved to 1st base and thus ended the DH spot for the Royals. But hey, German got a walk and...I'm not sure what Emil did.
