Schuerholz Stepping Down, reaction

Since I'm a relatively new Royals fan (est. 2004), I can't comment on his World Series run with the Royals. However, we hear about Shuerholz all the time in relationship to GMDM.

On Talking Chop, Royals Review's second cousin once removed, the following was posted:

I thought Cox would retire before him.  Whats Wren look like I don't know that much about him.  Wish we could get Dayton Moore.

That speaks volumes.

I hope Dayton Moore doesn't want to go back
He's done a good job for the Royals so far.  I want to keep him.
I probably disagree with you.

Looks like Moore isn't jumping ship
From the Braves official site:

The Braves have scheduled a 3:30 p.m. ET press conference at Turner Field. At that time, they will announce Schuerholz's transition and that his long-time assistant Frank Wren will assume his role as general manager.

I probably disagree with you.

Is Schuerholz going to
work for the White Sox now, too?

I hope
There is an exodus of scouting and front office personnel from Atlanta and Dayton scoops most of it up.

Liberty Media was rumored to want to cut costs when they purchased the team. This probably means Andruw Jones is gone. Do you think they'll start trading their high priced talent?

Hopefully
Moore said after he was hired that there was an agreement made with Atlanta before he was hired that he wouldn't poach front office personnel from Atlanta without the organization's permission.  I have no idea how long this gentleman's agreement was supposed to be for.  But, perhaps with Big John's departure, the agreement is over with.

And Atlanta announced they were cutting ties with A. Jones last week.  Other than that, I doubt the organization is changing course.  John's right hand man is taking over for him, so I'm sure he will stay the course.

I probably disagree with you.

Seventeen years ago today
KANSAS CITY STAR
OCTOBER 11, 1990

When John Schuerholz was boldly predicting last April that his high-dollar Kansas City Royals would win 100 games, Herk Robinson was back home tending to such unexciting matters as parking concessions and paper cup contracts.

But the Royals won only 75 games and finished in sixth place and as of Wednesday, John Schuerholz is the new vice-president and general manager of the Atlanta Braves.

And Robinson, lacking any official contact with the baseball end of the operation for the past 17 years, is sitting in Schuerholz' chair as the Royals' new general manager.

"Nothing that happens in this game surprises me," Robinson, 50, said Wednesday when the Royals held a news conference to announce his promotion almost immediately following Schuerholz' introduction in Atlanta. "The unpredictability of this game is one of the things that makes it so much fun."...

Burke denied speculation the Royals had fired Schuerholz, who talked owner Ewing Kauffman into spending $$19 million last winter on free agent pitchers Mark Davis, Storm Davis and Richard Dotson. Their contracts fattened the team payroll to the point that it became the biggest in the major leagues. But all three were almost totally ineffective. Storm Davis, the 1989 National League Cy Young winner, finished with an ERA of more than 5.00.

Asked why Schuerholz left, Burke said, "In all fairness, John would have to answer that question. I don't think anything pertained to the way this ball club was operated, or with ownership or the people on this staff.

"We told him we'd be very happy to have him and we did not want him to go," Burke added. "Somebody has started the rumor that we fired John, but that's not true."...

In the wake of their 1990 debacle, the Royals are expected to undergo a major personnel revamping, probably cutting their ties to such mainstays as catcher Bob Boone, second baseman Frank White and outfielder Willie Wilson, among others....

Schuerholz, at his last public appearance in Kansas City, was treated to long, loud booing when introduced at a hockey game last week.

Burke said Schuerholz agonized over his decision.

"It was a very, very difficult decision for him to make," Burke said. "I can tell you he sweated over it. He probably prayed over it. He sought counsel from his family and relatives, from his friends in town. It was very difficult to make, but it was his decision.""

Perhaps things will come full circle for KC and
Atlanta.  Schuerholz left KC who was a traditional top AL team.  He inherited an Atlanta organization that was dreadful and turned it into one of the most consistent winners in baseball history. GMDM leaves the traditional winner, inherits the dregs and . . .

John Schuerholz was a key reason the Royals were so successful.  He is a HOF executive for his work with the Royals and Braves.

Fun to relive the 1990 season - $19 million dollars for 3 top free agents.  Mark Davis may have been the most disappointing FA signing ever.  Cy Young winner to awful in one season. How things have changed in the FA agent world.

Wren
It's impossible to know what to think of the guy because the man who deemed him unworthy of GMing before was Peter Angelos.

Wren
probably learned a few things in his decade+ with Atlanta, so I wouldn't judge him solely by his year as GM of Baltimore.  Schuerholtz is leaving at the top of his game with some fantastic trade deadline moves this past year.  Easily, the best GM in Royals history.

Really?
I think Schuerholz was pretty overrated as a GM in KC. He won his World Series mostly with guys that he inherited. He made some really awful trades in an attempt to win now:

P Atlee Hammaker and others for a broke down P Vida Blue

1B Cecil Fielder for OF Leon Roberts

1B Ken Phelps for a broke down P Grant Jackson

P Danny Jackson for the light hitting SS Kurt Stilwell

P Melido Perez and P Greg Hibbard for a broke down P Floyd Bannister

P Charlie Leibrandt for the light hitting 1B Gerald Perry

And of course the Cone deal

His free agent acquisitions were largely busts - Mark Davis, Storm Davis, Rich Dotson, Bill Buckner, Bob Boone.

I'm not saying he was an awful GM. He did draft Saberhagen, Danny Jackson and Kevin Seitzer (although his drafts got much worse after that. He took a gamble on Bo Jackson. He traded crap for Danny Tartabull. He got Jeff Montgomery for nothing.

But best GM in Royals history? Its a tough call between Joe Burke and Cedric Tallis.

But at least we know who's worst!
