Mazzone fired

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3060643

This is one Atlanta import I would be thrilled with. I know we are all pleased with the improvement under McClure, but the fact is that coaching staffs always get reorganized when I new manager is hired. I believe so strongly in the mythical powers of Leo Mazzone that I would be willing to hire basically any manager if Leo came with him.

I think I'd let him manage
I want him too.
I probably disagree with you.

I don't get it
You don't like guys with a track record of losing and you don't like guys with a track record of success.  What do you want, someone with no track record at all?
I probably disagree with you.

he has a track record
it has just been wildly over-stated

no one ever mentions the guys these guru's don't help

Anyone but Terry

Wow...this is where I disagree with FireBell...
I would take Mazzone any day.  He knows how to take marginal pitchers and turn them into something good.  And, when he has talent he seems to get the best out of them too.  Meche, Bannister, and Grienke could all be stoppers with him as a manager.

If GMDM's focus is really on pitching then Leo is the man he wants as a manager.  Then bring in Kurt Gibson as the hitting coach with Bobby Mac kept as the pitching coach.  I would like to Macha as the bench coach.  IMO....

again I agree
I think with Leo as the manager and Bobby Mac as the pitching coach, we could transform a middle of the pack staff into a top of the line staff easily, especially if GMDM brings in some more arms this offseason

and Gibson would be phenomenal as the hitting coach, I really think he could push Butler and Gordon to the next level and help Teahen and Dejesus rebound

Gibby has a pretty sweet job as
bench coach in Arizona. I think the only way we get him to KC is by offering him the managerial position, but I'm not at all opposed to hiring Mazzone as manager. I think it would be a smart move. I also think we should pursue Kevin Seitzer as the new hitting coach. He really wasn't given much of a chance in Arizona and he knows his stuff when it comes to hitting.

I wouldn't hire Mazzone as manager
I see no evidence he could handle that job, and pitching coaches seem to make lousy manager (see Joe Kerrigan, Ray Miller)

Would I offer him the pitching coach job? Hell yes.

Not a good move by the O's
Mazzone is not a problem. In fact, there's evidence that he's one of the best pitching coaches in recent memory. The fact of the matter is that every pitching coach works better with some pitchers, and probably has a negative effect on others. If you're the O's, don't you look at Bedard's year and think that outweighs Daniel Cabrera regression? I certainly do.

Mazzone overrated? Absolutely not. Impact of pitching coach on a terrible staff overstated? Probably.

Great quotes
"While disappointed at not having the opportunity to play a role in the reconstruction of the Oriole pitcher development program, I understand and wish the team great success. I want to thank the Orioles organization for the opportunity to coach some great young talent. And I especially want to thank the fans in Baltimore who always made me feel at home."

Mazzone has no intention of being idle during the 2008 season.

"He's not going to sit out a year. He has no desire to do that," said Brad Steele, Mazzone's business manager. "He will have plenty of time to do that after he retires."

  1. Mazzone is obviously concerned not only with the 12 guys at the big club, but with how pitchers are developed throughout the system.  That "Braves' Way" is exactly what the Royals need.
  2. He's going to be a pitching coach for one of 29 other teams in 2008.  If comfort level with the front office and a chance to overhaul a system whose going to be loading up on young pitching talent are important factors for him, than you'd think KC would be one of the best matches in the league.  If the new manager also turns out to be a Braves' guy, then there is a real chance that this happens.
