Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

TRIVIA TIME...

I heard this on a Royals broadcast a couple of years ago, without searching, or peaking at comments, try to figure it out yourself...this is great fun and can be used in many a conversation MLB has 11 consecutive (back to back years) MVP Award Winners, one for every position (including pitcher), and 2 positions with 2, for a total of 11 players...also, there are 2 "active" players...active in "" because who knows how active Bonds is...there you go, you have 1...name the other 10

I'm not so sure
Maybe I don't understand the question, but are you just looking for number of multiple MVP winners? If you are then there's more than 12. Like I said, I might not have a handle on the question, so if anybody can provide some insight, I'm all ears.

OK...
so I think there is 13 of em now I looked at it...some are very surprising...name them in your head...it just helps when u say all 9 positions plus 4 extras...you can go position by position and its fun...so CF, 1B, 3B have two and also whatever position they considered Juan Gonzalez(this is the one I missed)...other than that I don't think there is more than 13...maybe I am wrong

I remember this trivia question
As I recall, the question was about winners in consecutive years, not merely multiple winners. And the position players were (IIRC):

C - Roy Campanella
1B - don't remember
2B - Joe Morgan
SS - Ernie Banks?
3B - Mike Schmidt
OF - Mickey Mantle
OF - Roger Maris
OF - Dale Murphy
P - Hal Newhouser

my guess at 1b
Frank Thomas, not sure but I know he won some MVPs back in the 90's. I don't know if they were consecutive but they may have been.

time to check....

and yes it is frank thomas.

O.K. yeah...consecutive years...SORRY...
for the bunk info...and if you came up with those off the top of your head...you are very good...

I believe the answer would be:

C  Yogi Berra ('54 & '55, also '51)
1B Jimmie Foxx ('32 & '33, also '38)
   Frank Thomas ('93 & '94)
2B Joe Morgan ('75 & '76)
SS Ernie Banks ('58 & '59)
3B Mike Schmidt ('80 & '81, also '86)
LF Barry Bonds ('92 & '93  and '01-'04, also '90)
CF Mickey Mantle ('56 & '57, also '62)
   Dale Murphy ('82 & '83)
RF Roger Maris ('60 & '61)

and, almost unbelievably...

P  Hal Newhouser ('44 & '45)

Ok, cool, again, SORRY for effing this up...consecutive years with MVPs
and

I've got a difficult one
Who were the first three MLB players who were drafted in the Amateur Draft and went directly to the Major Leagues without playing in the minor league system?
I probably disagree with you.

Dave Winfield
was one of them, right?

umm...
The only one I know is Xavier Nady, but I have to assume he is far from the first three.

Jim Abbott and John Olerud
I believe did it, but I don't think they were the first.

David Clyde is probably one.

Answer
I think this one was unreasonably hard.  The amateur draft started way back in 1965.  The first three players to be drafted and go straight into the majors were:

Mike Adamson 1967
Steve Dunning 1970
Burt Hooton 1971

I probably disagree with you.

by Scott McKinney on Nov 27, 2007 11:31 AM EST up reply actions

Complete list
Asterisk indicates they came out of high school. College is one thing, but its insane that a kid just out of high school could play MLB. And its stunning how many of these guys are pitchers.

1967 - P Mike Adamson, Baltimore
1970 - P Steve Dunning, Cleveland
1971 - P Pete Broberg, Washington
1971 - OF Rob Ellis, Milwaukee
1971 - P Burt Hooton, Chi. Cubs
1972 - 3B Dave Roberts, San Diego
1973 - P Dick Ruthven, Philadelphia
1973 - P David Clyde, Texas*
1973 - OF Dave Winfield, San Diego
1973 - P Eddie Bane, Minnesota
1978 - P Tim Conroy, Oakland*
1978 - 3B Bob Horner, Atlanta
1978 - P Brian Milner, Toronto*
1978 - P Mike Morgan, Oakland*
1985 - OF Pete Incaviglia, Texas
1988 - P Jim Abbott, California
1989 - 1B John Olerud, Toronto
2000 - OF Xavier Nady, San Diego

not in the amateur draft
He got up really quick, but I think he was signed at age 16-17 out of Curacao and didn't come up until 19.

by Moose Tacos on Nov 28, 2007 9:59 AM EST up reply actions

He had 3 minor league seasons
before coming to the majors.
I probably disagree with you.

Here's one
Bye-Bye Balboni owns the Royals single-season home run record with an impressive 36.

Can you name the single-season home run leaders for the other three teams that came into the league the same year as the Royals?

Hint: One of those single-seasons was set this year.

Let's give this a go
Brewers (Pilots): Prince with 50
Padres: Greg Vaughn with 50
Nats (Expos): Alfonso Soriano with 46 (I think)

BINGO
No need to make apologies when you're right.

Ryan Shealy will break Balboni's record in 2008.
