Hot Stove Talk tonight on 610

I heard on 610 yesterday afternoon that were was going to be a "Hot Stove" show tonight (Thursday) hosted by Denny and Ryan.  GMDM will be the guest.  Ryan described it as basically giving DM an hour to talk on the radio.  I think they'll take some calls too.  Anyway, it's from 6-7pm.  I don't think I'll get to listen, but it could be interesting.  Okay, it'll be the same old PC non-answers, but still it's baseball talk in late November!

For a non-KC local like me,
please fill us in on what was interesting or provide the link if that is possible.  I am sure Guillen will be a topic which will be a company line answer.  Same with Yubuta.  On going conversations ... and we are speaking to anyone who we think can help the team.

I'd like to hear about winter league players and if anyone is showing great progress.

Someone please ask him
How he could let Jason Larue get away. I am still furious about that one!

Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

Radio
With the satellite radio stuff these days, you would think they could find a way to broadcast any radio station signal via satellite to anywhere. That way I could listen to 610 in my truck tonight since I won't be home to hear it on the internet.

Riske close to signing with the Brewers
From MLBTraderumors.com:

Over on the ESPN side, Buster Olney says that David Riske is close to a deal with the Brewers. Olney supplies no details beyond it being a multiyear deal. As he notes, the Royals offered him two years and $6 million earlier this off-season. This deal could be comparable to Scott Linebrink's four years and $19 million.

I really doubt the Royals offer was as little as 2yrs/$6M.  His player option was worth a little more than $3M, so I doubt they'd waste their time offering him less than that.

But that's all academic.  Riske will be gone soon for much too much money.  I'm glad Dayton didn't get far into that auction.

I probably disagree with you.

I think letting him slip away....
....Will be a mistake.  Failing to flip him for something at the deadline was not detrimental, but significant.  (Hey, If Graffanino can net us De La Rosa....)

Let's set 3 years/$12MM as our maximum.  In the end, it's really only $4MM/yr....which ultimately should not be a risk for any club.  I know relief pitchers are a dime-a-dozen, but if we're willing to go multi-years for an unknown Japanese commodity....then what the hell?

I'd rather take Riske than some lower-end draft pick, who will likely never amount to anything anyway.

I don't think Riske is worth it for the Royals
Unless we're moving Soria to the rotation (and we're not), Riske isn't worth 3/12 to the Royals.  With Yabuta added to the team, our bullpen is good right now.  I'd rather our money to go to a corner OFer and/or starting pitcher and save the rest for next year when there is a really good FA class.

And, for the record, I'm willing to bet Riske's contract is going to be bigger than 3/12.

I probably disagree with you.

by Scott McKinney on Nov 29, 2007 9:10 PM EST up reply actions

From what I heard
it's closer to Linebrink money 4/19 definitely not worth it at that price.  Good for him, but definitely worth it for the Royals to look for more cost effective alternatives.  I think with Yabuta and Nunez setting up for Soria we will have a formidable back end of the bullpen.

by lordbyronk on Nov 30, 2007 10:05 AM EST up reply actions

Well said
We've got a dominant closer, three good RH relievers in Yabuta, Nunez and Peralta and two good lefties in Gobble and Bale.  That's a good, deep 6-man bullpen with Braun and Musser adding additional depth.
I probably disagree with you.

I listened to it; no new information
When asked about any FA, he talked about how good that player is and how any team would be lucky to have them.  When asked if the Royals were pursuing a player, Moore would just say that they are working hard to acquire the best players they can.  When asked about concerns about any FA, he said that we can rest assured that if the sign someone, they looked at everything about a player, including his past, present and future and made sure that it was a good move for the Royals.

Same ol', same ol'.

I probably disagree with you.

I'm Glad Our GM
Is not revealing anything of note on a radio chat show. How would that possibly help him make good deals?
Being a fan is irrational, but what is the alternative?

It is the only smart way for a GM to act
I wouldn't want him tipping his hand in any way.  Makes for bad radio.  Reading or hearing interviews with him is a waste of time.
I probably disagree with you.

by Scott McKinney on Nov 29, 2007 9:07 PM EST up reply actions

not the only smart way
Obviously, it would be stupid to tip your hand. But I would suggest that the GMs who really know how to play their cards right go past this strategy and bluff every once in a while, using the media to their advantage.

And no, this is not a complaint, just food for thought.

by Moose Tacos on Nov 29, 2007 11:27 PM EST up reply actions

That's true
And I don't think Moore is above doing that from time to time.  But you have to do that judiciously.  Kenny Williams in Chicago does that all the time.  He spreads misinformation about who he is willing to re-sign, FA's he's interested in, contracts he's willing to do or not, and this has led to no one ever believing him.  He has repeatedly overplayed his hand.  The one way that Moore does "bluff" and not just stay mum is that when he's asked about any current Royals player or prospect, he talks in glowing terms about them and how the organization is very high on that player.  He said that about Gathright yesterday on 610, even though I'm pretty confident he's willing to trade him and doesn't see him as a future starter.
I probably disagree with you.

BTW
Mets just traded OF Lastings Milledge for OF Ryan Church and C Brian Schneider.

Seems like we could have matched that - Teahen and Buck for Milledge? Would you do that trade? I would do it in a heartbeat and sign a new catcher like LoDuca or Barrett.

I don't know what the Mets are thinking here.

Milledge
I think that would be a tough one to pull the trigger on, but I can see the potential there. Somebody give me some numbers to compare here. I don't have access to all of those cool stats and projections you guys always have, or if I do I don't know where to find them.

by MileHighKCfan on Nov 30, 2007 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

Milledge
He's had two part-time major league seasons (less than 200 AB's in each season).  His first part-time season was quite poor.  His second was a little above average (which makes it no better than average for a corner OFer).  But the value in Milledge is his upside potential which is huge.  He is a possible future star.  PECOTA projects him to eventually develop into a .370 OBP, .510 SLG hitter.

I would have done Teahen and Buck for Milledge.  Considering that Teahen and Buck are still young and developing (while Schneider and Church are  not), I probably would have wanted the Mets to throw a prospect into the deal as well.

I probably disagree with you.

by Scott McKinney on Nov 30, 2007 3:47 PM EST up reply actions

Prospect
I was leaning that way myself since I didn't really have any numbers to look at and I was just looking at potential. So why have the Mets given up on Milledge? Or is it something else?

by MileHighKCfan on Nov 30, 2007 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

Milledge
Put up average to above average MLB numbers at a very young age. So he's likely to get even better. He has good power, good walk numbers, and can play CF (although his CF defense has been questioned).

Supposedly NY got rid of him because they didn't like his attitude. But the only 'tude problems I have seen documented were that he listens to loud rap music and after a home run once, as he ran onto the field the next inning, he gave high fives to all the fans. Frankly, I'd love a guy like that. Oh, but he has cornrows and listens to rap music, so he must be a thug.

Milledge and attitude
In his first season, 2006, he had severe attitude and prima donna problems which really rubbed a lot of his teammates the wrong way.  The standard line floating through NY media was that he straightened up and was flying right in 2007 without friction with his Mets teammates.

Maybe he does still have attitude problems.  Maybe the Mets front office doesn't think he'll develop into the star that most think he will (they have gotten a better look at him than anyone else).

But, unless there is some awful hidden secret, it looks like a bad deal for the Mets.  They picked up a catcher who is all glove and no bat, which is something they could have acquired easily through free agency.  And they picked up a pretty good corner OFer who has already peaked.

I probably disagree with you.

So the question is...
How would RR have reacted if DM made the Buck and Teahen for Milledge and throw-in deal? I have a feeling this would have gotten mixed reviews.

by MileHighKCfan on Nov 30, 2007 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

It would have gotten mixed reviews
...because it would be a fair trade.  Even trades involve good rewards and painful giving.  It would have hurt to give up Teahen who still has upside potential and Buck who is an above average catcher, and there is always a shortage of decent catchers throughout professional baseball.  But it would have been worth it to get a potential star player who can play any OF position.  If the Mets threw in an ok prospect, I would have been very happy with it.
I probably disagree with you.

by Scott McKinney on Nov 30, 2007 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

Mets
Add to my above comment: Is it the whole wanting to find a catcher thing possibly?

by MileHighKCfan on Nov 30, 2007 4:05 PM EST up reply actions

In a weird...
round about way making the trade you suggested would be like trading Beltran for Milledge. I'm pretty sure this is an indictment on the star power we got back in the original Beltran trade.
