Trade Market

The Royals will spend the majority of the offseason looking to upgrade a few positions in the field for a power hitter either SS, LF, or both.  The FA options have been discussed heavily over the past couple weeks.   In this article, I will break trade canidates into veterans at SS, veterans at LF, and the category I think the Royals will venture into the undervalued talent, which will be under team control for a greater amount of time.  Of course, trades are a little trickier than FA's seeing as we have to have something another team would actually want.  I figure our most tradeable commodoties are DDJ, Gobble, Gator, Huber, Costa, Buckner, Peralta.

Veteran Trade Canidates at SS:
1.) Miguel Tejada (Orioles) - Though he is a player on the decline, his production could be a welcome boost to the middle of the lineup.  In 2007, he hit .297/.357/.442 with 18 HR's and 96 RBI's.  Defense is also on the downward slide, could TPJ be his defensive replacement?  Under contract until 2009, but 26 mil seems expensive.

2.) Orlando Cabrera (Angels) - He would be a one year rent-a-player for 9 mil, but he would provide solid D and a welcome bat, but does he provide more offense than TPJ?  2007 stats: .301/.345/.397 with 8 HR and 86 RBI's.  20 SB's are a nice perk as well.

3.) Rafael Furcal (Dodgers) - Another one year player with a slightly higher price tag of $13 mil.  He provides a lot of the same skills that Cabrera does albeit with a higher price tag.  2007 stats:  .270/.333/.355 with 6 HR and 47 RBI's.  He also had 25 SB's.

4.) Bobby Crosby (A's) Signed through 2009 for 8.75 mil.  He's often injured, but who on the A's wasn't this year.  The A's could quite possibly be focusing on a rebuilding year.  Due to his injury history and being a bit of an underperformer also with the A's being sellers could he be had on the cheap?  2007 stats:  .226/.278/.341 with 8 HR and 31 RBI in 349 AB's.

5.) Bill Hall (Brewers) - He's signed though 2010 for about 20 mil.  While somewhat defensively challenged at both SS and CF, his bat will play anywhere.  He's another one who will need TPJ as a defensive replacement, but he could be capable of hitting 30 HR's.  2007 stats:  .254/.315/.425 14 HR and 63 RBI's albeit in an off year for him, but he's signed to a reasonable deal and might be had reasonably.

Veteran Trade Canidates in OF:
1.) Rocco Baldelli (D'Rays) - His contract has one guaranteed year at 2.25 mil and club options for 2009-2011.   Though he is often injured, his value will never be lower and he could still have a JD Drew like career.  Could he be had for a defensive minded SS and a pitcher?  Question is has all his time off hurt his productivity on the field?  2007 stats:  .204/.268/.358 with 5 HR and 12 RBI's in 137 AB's.

2.) Pat Burrell (Phillies) -  He would be a one year rent-a-player for 14 mil. The Phillies are not happy with him despite his 30 HR's and 96 RBI's, so would they be crazy enough to trade him?  His 2007 line is .256/400/.502.  Drawback:  He'll need a platoon partner due to significant splits and is a little strikeout prone.

3.) Jason Bay (Pirates) He is under contract through 2009 for 13.25 mil.  He's coming off an off year.  The Pirates will be asking a lot, but he'd make a nice addition if he can bounce back.  2007 stats: .247/.327/.418 with 21 HR and 84 RBI's.

4.) Luke Scott (Astros)  He is making little more than the minimum and is under team control for the next 4 years. For whatever reason the Astros just don't seem to like this guy, he got off to a slow start, but is capable of hitting 25 to 30 HR's in a year.  Drawback:  The Astros needs are much the same as ours.  2007 stats: .255/.351/.504 18 HR and 64 RBI's in 369 AB's.  Now again, Why don't they like this guy?

5.) Marcus Thames (Tigers) He's making little more than the league minimum and under team control for 3 more years. Though he is a little defensively challenged and a little bit of a late bloomer, he has a lot of power for a corner OF.  He's another one who seems to have fallen out of favor with the Tigers, most likely due to lack of OBP.  Maybe Chris Shelton could be had as well?  2007 stats:  .242/.278/.498 with 18 HR's and 54 RBI's.

Up and Coming Canidates at SS:
1.) Brett Lillibridge/Yunel Escobar (Braves)
2.) Chin Lin Hu (Dodgers)
3.) Sean Rodriquez (Angels)

Up and Coming Canidates in OF:
1.) Carlos Quentin/Carlos Gonzalez (D'backs)
2.) Matt Murton (Cubs)
3.) Lastings Milledge (Mets)

Overall, it will boil down to the amount of talent that we will have to part with and what exactly the other teams need.  I think we match up well with some teams, particularly any needing bullpen help and CF help.  I also tried to keep the list realistic to people we could realistically obtain; even though, I'd love to see Jimmy Rollins in Royal Blue.  Any thoughts on the trade market?  Are there any rumors in the works that could possibly break?

Good list
I'd add at SS Khalil Greene. There are rumblings he could be moved. There are also young guys like Erick Aybar, Alberto Callaspo, Alexi Casilla that could be available.

Another outfielder to consider is Angels OF Juan Rivera. I don't see a place for in in the OC.

Mets
are interested in A-Rod at SS so you never know, Jose Reyes could be a name that pops up if A-Rod talks heat up

No way they trade Reyes
I think its more likely A-Rod plays 3B, and Wright plays either 2B or 1B.

It seems more likely
that Rodriguez would play short, Reyes second, Wright third.

i don't think GMDM is worried about SS
at least for 2008...

who knows though

I second the Thames/Shelton idea

by Freneau on Nov 8, 2007 1:12 PM EST reply actions

Thames needs a left-handed platoon partner
career v. LHP:  263/333/512
career v. RHP:  226/287/479

Shelton, however, would be a decent bet to provide league average 1B/DH production on the cheap for a few years.

Ross Gload could be the LH Platoon
"I'm tired of all these stupid a$$ questions every day. Why the f**k would I hit Brett for Miller?" The rest is history.

by DC Royal on Nov 9, 2007 11:56 AM EST up reply actions

LH Platoon play 2/3 of the time
so for a corner outfield position, you would want somebody better than Gload (2007 v. RHP:  269/306/435; career v. RHP: 283/327/430).  Geoff Jenkins is probably the best of the readily available LH platoon-types.

The problem with Thames is that Detroit would want more than he is worth, as he really should only play 1/3 of the time.  There are usually plenty of RH platoon-types available as cheap major or minor league free agents that could probably come close to matching Thames -- Bobby Kielty, Jon Knotts, Jason DuBois, etc.

Shortstop probably won't be addressed
While I don't agree that Pena is the answer, I think GMDM is more likely to fix some other areas first, and leave SS for another season.

I want to bring up again - how about trading for Miguel Cabrera, with the idea of moving him to either LF, or 1B/DH, depending on what role Butler ultimately plays?

Cabrera would cost about 25-30 million for two years, and even if he was lost to FA, most likely KC would receive 2 draft picks. Ideally, Cabrera could be persuaded to sign a longer deal with KC.

Ideal fit - RH power bat, just now entering his prime - could complete the "core" power trio of Butler/Gordon/Cabrera for the forseeable future.

by loyal2s dad on Nov 8, 2007 2:21 PM EST reply actions

It would just take too much to trade for him
We'd have to disband the group of young players to get Cabrera, and that's not worth it. Talks would start at either Butler or Gordon and go from there.

Florida's too shrewd
Every story about the Yankees angle on this trade (as all of the stories about everything in the offseason are about the Yankees) says that Florida would require at least 1 of Hughes/Chamberlain/Kennedy to get Cabrera.  We have nothing even remotely expendable to make such a trade happen.

Gutting the organization for one veteran
This organization is not in a position where it can afford to give up several of its best young players for one excellent player.  Sure I'd love to get Cabrera for a handful of B prospects like Buckner, Lubanski, Huber, etc. but that just isn't going to happen.  Cabrera is one of the best hitters in baseball.  The Marlins can bet a ton of young talent from someone for him.  Would you be willing to give up Greinke, Teahen and Nunez for him?  I wouldn't.  I don't think that makes much sense for this team.
I probably disagree with you.

BILL HALL!
I would love to get Bill Hall. I haven't seen a lot of him, so I am blindly following statistics. But he has great defensive statistics at shortstop (plus/minus of +18 in 2006). So I think the bad at defense thing is a myth.

by Moose Tacos on Nov 8, 2007 3:25 PM EST reply actions

+1
Good hitting shortstops usually have reps as poor defenders, poor hitting as great defenders, despite whatever the reality of the situation.

The exception:  Jeter.

This is true
of all premium defensive positions.  Catchers are another one that either get praised for bat or glove, but rarely both.  Hall is on a nice contract, maybe DDJ and Gobble to get him?

by lordbyronk on Nov 9, 2007 4:24 PM EST up reply actions

Hochevar, Teahen, and Nunez
Yes, I would trade those three for Cabrera, provided the Royals were able to lock Cabrera up for an additional 5 or so years beyond the 2 he has left before FA eligibility.

Greinke would be off-limits, due to his upside.

by loyal2s dad on Nov 8, 2007 3:28 PM EST reply actions

I don't think that would be enough
Right now, the rumor is that the Yankees want one of Chamberlain/Hughes/Kennedy (each is a great pitching prospect), plus Melky Cabrera (at least an average MLB CFer), and Jose Tabata (an excellent young OF prospect).  The Yankees might be willing to go Kennedy, Cabrera, Tabata.

Hochevar is not as good of a prospect as any of those three Yankee pitchers.  Melky Cabrera probably has a trade value similar to Teahen right now.  Tabata is an A prospect, while Nunez is a B prospect at best.  So I don't think your suggested package would have any chance of snagging Cabrera.

I probably disagree with you.

what about???
throwing DeJesus in on the deal?
Sign Alex Gordon to a life time contract!!!

by eboston on Nov 9, 2007 3:07 PM EST up reply actions

burrell
We're definitely not getting Burrell without a significant amount of money added to the deal. He cleared waivers in August, meaning nobody wanted him for free. But I guess to answer your question, yes, the Phillies seem to be willing to trade him.

Also, he is brutal defensively.

by Moose Tacos on Nov 8, 2007 3:40 PM EST reply actions

That does NOT
mean that no one wanted him for free. It means that no waiver claims on an expensive player were placed.

Leak: 11 current FA's are implicated by Mitchell
I just heard that according to some Miami paper, 11 current FA's (as well as many players who are not FA's) are implicated in the Mitchell Report as having used PED's.  This should affect the FA market in some interesting ways.  Hopefully this will make some bargains for the Royals.
I probably disagree with you.

by Scott McKinney on Nov 8, 2007 5:40 PM EST reply actions

yeah, but watch those free agents be
Reggie Sanders, Terrance Long, Bobby Kielty, etc.... Tell me that wouldn't be funny.

Update on Michell and 11 free agents
Now the Boston Globe is reporting that the agent(s) who reported this story are now saying that they misunderstood what they heard.  Now they are saying that 11 current FA's were contacted by Mitchell and asked for further information.  They may or may not be implicated in the report.
I probably disagree with you.

burrell
is an under-rated, over-hated player, which makes him perfect to trade for

but i dont see him as part the Moore/Hillman worldview

They are both righties.

i'm no fan of TPJ
but i dont think he is the problem

he makes the league minimum, andis only somewhat horrible at the plate... with his glove, he's probablyt a break even player
