Around SBN: NHL Trade Rumors: Do You Make A Move For Rick Nash?

2.9167 to 2.3611

Royals Reviewers who took part in my survey "like" Soccer more than Hockey. Personally, I'd much rather go to a Hockey game than a soccer one, even though I played Soccer for two years in college and started back when I was seven.

Clearly, we should be dropping more futbol references on this site, what with the huge fanbase it has here.

The interest in Basketball was just a hair shy of 6 out of ten, interest in Football was 7.5, and interest in Baseball was 9.6667.

More results forthcoming! Stay tuned!

someone put up a thread about callaspo!!!  what does everyone think about this?  (when i first saw the name over at mvn.com/mlb-royals, i thought it said "billy butler" instead of "buckner" and i almost had a heart attack.:)

futbol
Lets talk EPL.  Big matches tomorrow, The Gooners v Chelski, and Man Yoo vs Liverpool.  I'm a Boro fan, so I guess its logical that my psychological profile would saddle me with the Royals as well.  I usually defer to the dour Neyer or the gender bending Christina Kahrl, but I think I like the Callaspo deal.  Haven't done the research regarding the domestic violence issues, but setting that aside, would appear to be a candidate for replacing Grudz.  He has to start declining this year, right?

hockey is better
i can't believe there's this argument on this site, but it's here.  soccer requires more endurance and patience than hockey, but hockey is a more athletic sport i believe.  skating is much more tiring than running (hence all the line changes).  also, there is violence, hardcore hitting.  in soccer the closest thing to that is flopping, guys that think or act like they really got hit but are faking the whole thing.  i don't respect that.  in general, there's just a lot about soccer i don't like or respect.  i would much rather watch a hockey game.  kudos to those of you that had the patience to stay w/ soccer and keep playing...i only had one year of it and hated it.

soccer
the beautiful game

there is a reason hockey is a dying sport and soccer is the most popular sport in the world.

the reason
is the stupid tv deal hockey signed w/ the OLN (outdoor life network for those who haven't heard of it, for largely good reasons).  hockey was good until that lockout, and it is just now trying to come back.  the mls will never have the following the nhl has, despite bad tv deals by the nhl.

Me personally,
From time to time I can get pretty caught up in college basketball, and I always follow the NCAA tournament.  But I would not watch a full NBA game unless I was paid to do so.  Something is wrong with the NBA.  I can't quite put my finger on it but it does suck.

And I used to like hockey fine as well, but the sport has become such a train wreak over the last ten years.  The migration of teams out of Canada.  The ridiculous expansion franchises.  The promotion of fist fights as the sports main selling point to non-hardcore fans.  The hardass management tactics during the lock-out.  A few years ago I was in Quebec City during the playoffs and that was nice.  Rightly or not, the Canadians I spoke with blamed the new wave of U.S. owners for ruining the league by flooding it with money and shlop.

Soccer is like baseball in one way.  You can enjoy it while talking with friends.  It is not a jump-and-scream sport.  I like that.  Plus I used to play so I understand the game to a degree.  My wife will go to baseball and soccer games with me, but I know I would pay a long painful "sour-wife" bill if I dragged her to a hockey, football or basketball game.

The reason
is that there isn't ice in the middle of the world, so the youth can't just play a pick up game of hockey.

That
...and it is pretty cheap and easy to get your hands on a soccer ball. Hell, you can use a coconut if you had to. Hockey requires a little more equipment and money.

Hockey Is Paying
For abandoning Canada for the big cities in the U.S.. Does anyone in Dallas really know the rules of Hockey? Two teams in Florida?

NBC's telecast of the deciding match of this year's Stanley Cup was the lowest prime time Nielsen in its history; "Build A Better Burger" on the Food Network had a better rating.

I'm not getting older....oh, wait, yes I am....and slower.... and weaker. God, this is great!

Hockey > Soccer
one part I hate about soccer is diving. I can't stand that.

by kocur on Dec 16, 2007 4:14 PM EST reply actions

The Dive
I agree on the diving - - its similar to drawing a charge in basketball, although if you take a dive in the box, and a penalty is awarded, its a penalty kick, which can play a huge part in determining who wins and who loses.  By and large, ref's do a decent job of sorting these out.  And occasionally (I'm talking to you Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink) the ref's will give a bad acting job on a dive a yellow card.  I think Hockey and Soccer are very similar in a sense, I like the relative "free form" or free play that takes place, and the space in the game for creativity or bits of extemporaneous brilliance.  Its not like Walter Payton running between the tackles - - its much more moment to moment stuff.  Baseball fans should be predisposed to soccer - - they are both relatively slower moving games, which benefit from moments of great build up or intensity.  And perhaps the best aspect of soccer is the total lack of commercials which break up the play - 45 minute halves with a 15 minute half time.  Can't beat that.

by daneiorglives on Dec 16, 2007 8:49 PM EST reply actions

I could beat that,
just shorten the halves to 15 minutes and have a 45 minute halftime. Sorry, just have no respect for soccer. Maybe it's the dives, I don't know. The only thing that I enjoy about soccer is seeing the crazy fans over-seas where they actually enjoy it.

I never once took a dive in 14 years playing,
for the record.

One scary memory from my playing days
I played fullback.  When the opposing team had a free kick four of us would line up about 10 yards in front of the ball blocking a clear shot to the goal.  The coach had us put our hands behind our back to prevent hand balls.

Every year at least one or two of us would skillfully block a kick with our "testicklees."

Yeah, good times.

Ugh...
yes, I've done that before. It's a blast. Everyone crowds around, some moron asks you "are you okay?" and you want to scream:

"HOW THE ** COULD I BE OKAY?!?!"

I respect THAT
...but I don't think that is true for the majority of soccer players at the higher levels.

by MileHighKCfan on Dec 18, 2007 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

You're probably right
I played two years at my college, and the amount of players who take dives in our league was pretty high too.
