Daniel Cortes: Will He Play in the Majors in 2008

Jon Weisman on CNNSI.com has recently ranked the top AL rotations.  Two observations:

  1. His ratings and rating system are rediculous...my 12 year old daughter would do a better job...seriously you call that journalism?  His comments on Gil Meche alone show a complete ineptitude for interpreting baseball statistics.
  2. He suggests that Daniel Cortes might be able to make the leap to play for the Royals at some point during the 2008 season.
I think this would be a completely idiotic thing for the Royals to do, save for a late season call up.  But it did make me do a little research to get better aquainted with young Mr. Cortes, and all I can say is...I really like this kid.  Take a look at his improvement over the last 3 seasons...remember he's only 20 years old.

2006 Burlington Midw ERA 6.69  K/9 7.71 WHIP 1.63

2007 Wilmington Caro ERA 3.07 K/9 8.78 WHIP 1.20

I realize we're talking about high A numbers, but definitely something to get mildly excited about.  I'll be interested to see how he does this year against some stronger prospects and former major leaguers.

And if you're looking for a good laugh...go read Weisman's column.

Discussing an organization he doesn't know
Frequently when a national journalist talks about each MLB team or each AL or NL team, they are forced to discuss some teams they really aren't familiar with.  Sure they know the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, etc., but he knows about as much about the Royals as I know about the Ottawa Senators (and that isn't very much).  So, he does a little research (and I mean a little) and finds out that the Royals top non-Hochevar pitching prospect is Cortes and that he has some nice minor league numbers.  So out comes some random speculation.  I think Moore knows how to handle pitching prospects and he has no interest in rushing them.  If Cortes does really well in AA, he could move to AAA at some point next season, but he won't taste the majors.  I don't think he'll even get a September call up, because it will probably be too soon and he'd have to make room on the 40-man roster which can be difficult.  If all goes very well, we might see Cortes in KC in 2009.
I probably disagree with you.

While anything is possible, I don't see Cortes
in KC for several reasons:
  1.  He is only 20 years old and hasn't pitched above High A in Wilmington.  Last year, he didn't even pitch the whole season.  It was a helium year for Cortes but AA will be a big step.
  2.  Unlike previous years, KC has much better pitching depth so the Royals don't have to dig into the lower ranks.  The Omaha rotation in 2008 could have Hochevar, Davies, Dusty Hughes, Carlos Rosa, Tyler Lumsden, Matt Wright and Ben Hendrickson.  That doesn't include reliever either - only starters.
  3.  Don't think GMDM likes to have prospects skip levels.
Add it all together and Cortes stays in NW Arkansas all of 2008.  Here is hoping he is healthy and shows strong progress.  I think he could be a top 100 prospect soon.

ugg... "his 9-13 record failed to silence the critics"

thats pretty bad, since 1) i've literally cannot recall anyone criticizing Meche/contract since May and 2) wow... citing his record... wow

Sloppy stuff
The stuff on Meche is actually what had me laughing the hardest...I can't believe guys get paid to write this kind of stuff.
I'd rather be watching baseball.

not sure I'd rank
Bannister ahead of Greinke and Meche, either.

I think Greinke's going to win that one in a landslide this season.

Cortes
He could but it's not likely.

Already has the best stuff in our system. If he takes another step forward with control/command, I don't think they'll hold him back if there's an opening in the rotation and there's not a better candidate.

That said, I see him spending most of the year in AA.

Springdale is going to have
a very good rotation.  I can't wait to get down there and see some baseball in that new stadim.

That article
is a case study in why fans bother to create their own blogs...

Once you get past Verducci, who is still putting out a great product, there's not much good baseball writing at SI.

Seperate note, I have on three occaisions over the years e-mailed Peter King with glaring factual errors in his NFL column for SI---obvious embarrassing stuff---and never gotten a response.

EX:

When Al Saunders went to Washington as offensive coordinator and became the highest paid non-head coach in the league, King gushed for pages about the genius of this move.  Among his tidbits was the assertion that Saunders never called the same play twice in any four game span.  Italics were added for emphasis.

Somebody told King this and he printed it as fact.  Period.  No follow-up, fact-checking or documentation, just from source to ear to scribe's pen.

For anybody who had watched the Chiefs offense under Saunders [which granted was highly effective] this was obviously nonsense, but there it was in black and white.

Four months later ESPN the mag did a cover story on Larry Johnson who mentioned that once he became the starter, the Chiefs only had about five running plays and just executed them over and over---running each one as many as three or four times in a single half.

Dick Vermeil offered that by the end of the first quarter everybody knew what was coming but it didn't matter because they couldn't stop it anyway.

I followed up to King with a note including attachments to his original column and its refutation by actual research done by a staffer at ESPN the mag and first-hand on the record quotes from the star player and head coach.

Asked for a retraction, mention, something.

Nada.

Instead, Frank from New Haven who writes about the coffee on I-95 rest stops gets featured.

I stopped bothering two years ago.  Unreadable.

Then NBC took over Sunday Night NFL and insisted that the NFL goons shut down ESPN's fabulous "Primetime" show so we could be subjected to PK's celebrity journalism across another platform.

The season highlight for me was the smug first-hand account of how he had spoken "personally" to Nick Saban and there was no chance he was bolting the Dolphins and that Saban was hurt people wouldn't take him at his word that he was committed to Miami.

Four full days after the press conference announcing Saban in Alabama, the video of Peter King offering this denial was still featured on the front page of the NBC sports web site.

Hilarious.

Royals Review forever.

I agree even thoug its football
I canceled my subuscibtition to SI because I couldn't take the crap they said was true journalism.  Now I read yahoo, ESPN and SI and between the three I think I can make out how the game really went.

i just dont read peter king
everything else in SI is pretty good.

The Name
"Peter King" says it all.
I'm not getting older....oh, wait, yes I am....and slower.... and weaker. God, this is great!

heh
I don't know what is worse about King -- his vapid analysis or the fact that he started writing about his daughter's high school lacrosse team every week.  Either way, that prompted me to steer clear of his columns several years ago.

callis says...
Jim (Washington, DC): What's the upside potential of Daniel Cortes of the Royals? He seems like a very unheralded prospect up to this point.

SportsNation Jim Callis: (2:37 PM ET ) Big, big upside. As I mentioned, I rated him right ahead of Hochevar. Cortes has a slightly better fastball and a slightly better curveball. He has to be near the top of the list for combination of upside and unhype.

He says he ranked Cortes at #41 and Hochevar at #42.
