Opening Day Information or What Are You Doing Opening Day?

Just got off the phone with the nice but concise Royals phone operator. Here are some particulars that I thought might be of interest:

Opening Day, April 2, 2007 Your Kansas City Royals vs. the Boston Red Sox

9:00 AM - Parking lot opens
11:00 AM - 810 WHB starts broadcasting from the K
12:00 PM - Live reports from all local news stations
1:00 PM  - Gates open to the K, get a free magnet calendar, the first 20,000 get a free Rally Bandana
1:18 PM- Alex Gordon crushes his first homerun in Major League BP at the K (just kidding, it'll be his 10th)
1:42 PM - Half the people in the stadium have the bandana wrapped around their heads like a do-rag

And now in all seriousness

2:27 PM - Official opening ceremonies start to include:
Recognition of Denny Matthews as 2007 Ford C. Frick Award Winner (HOF induction)
Clark Hunt and Warren O'Neil throw out first pitches in memory of Lamar Hunt and Buck O'Neil
Grudzielanek receives his Gold Glove
REO Speedwagon performs the National Anthem along with a B-2 flyover
3:10 PM - First Pitch
3:12 PM - Meche strikes out Julio Lugo to open the season with his soon-to-be famous curveball

So what are you doing Opening Day?

DISNEYLAND!!!
I'm going to Disneyland. :)

Seriously. It's the kids spring break, and as much as I would love to sit at home and listen to the Royals games on Gameday Audio, or MLB.TV, I cannot.

Besides, my daughter is super pissed that the Royals demoted Shane Costa. We have tickets to Royals/M's games up here at the end of April, and last year she caught a slicing foul off the bat of Costa and wants him to sign it. If he isn't up here, at the end of April, I'm gonna have a very ticked off 6 year old girl in a pink KC hat. Cute, but dangerous.

Running out of my 2:00 class....
When it ends at 2:50 in a desperate scramble to make it home before the 3:10 start time. Thought about going to the opener this year - but why? Just a bunch of loud obnoxious people who only go to one game a year, and no nothing about the team. I'm going to go to the Matszuka / Greinke game instead.

Working
But hopefully getting out in time to run home and watch the game on .... Holy Hell I have to watch the Royals on freaking NESN again.  Has anyone else had this experience?  I know that all home town announcers are biased to some degree but most at least call the game effectively.  I can't cout the times I've had to listen to Jerry Remy talk about how he spent (or is going to spend) his offseason in the middle of an AB or about how he loves hot dogs in the middle of an inning ending double play.  I'm not making this up, those guys at NESN make it like trying to watch a game at a bar only you can't reach over and smack the guy for blabbing about crap you don't care about while you're trying to watch the game.  Gil Meche could be throwing a perfect game and Remy would be trying to interview somebody in the stands about the camping trip they went on.  Truly awful!!!  I will probably just turn the volume down and listen to Denny Matthews on the computer.

/end anti-NESN rant

Go Royals!!!!!

Taking the day off
Opening Day should be a national holiday.  I shouldn't have to take a vacation day.  But this society isn't as enlightened as I am.

So I'm taking the day off to watch as much baseball on TV and MLB.tv as I possibly can.  Of course my eyes will be glued to every pitch of the Royals-Red Sox game.  I'm going to love it, win or lose.

Remember guys, even if this team gets off to a bad start, that doesn't mean it is a horrible team.  I know it is tempting to jump to conclusions (good or bad) after a few weeks, but patience is better.

Dunno bout taking the day off
But I may come down with a severe case of "royals fever" around 4:00 est and head home early.

Of course, I'll be wearing my KC Royals tie (which I proudly wear about once a year).  I'm afraid it may raise some suspicions about the veracity of my illness.

Meeting friends at noon, hope to be at the K by 1. Grill by 1:30, in the stadium by 2:30, fight with Red Sox fan by 4:45.

REO Speedwagon?
Only the Royals would bring in a band older than their last pennant.

Ouch!

(Actually, REO is OK in a generic 70s rock kinda way...)

generic or "geriatric" kinda way?
If it weren't for baseball I'd be working.

Current forecast for Opening Day
82 degrees
Mostly sunny
Windy

Weather.com says they currently forecast a south wind of 22 degrees.

Is a south wind going in or out or a cross wind in Kauffman Stadium?

by Scott McKinney on Mar 30, 2007 4:00 PM EDT reply actions

If I read my map correctly,
Then a wind from the south would be blowing out of Kauffman Stadium.  Might see a high scoring game.  Please keep the ball down, Gil.

by Scott McKinney on Mar 30, 2007 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Generally, south winds
blow out to left/left-center ish, so yeah - could be a homerfest. Sounds more like summer conditions than opening day!

Going to the game.
Bottle of rum and a six o' talls in hand mixed with some steaks/chops/burgers.  I'm genuienly (sp???) giddy.

Steaks, Brats and Beer
Getting to the K about 10, hanging out with the 810 crew for a bit, then off to watch BP. See you there, fellas.

Sadly
teaching on opening day.  Out of personal time, so I'll have to catch a game later in the summer.  If there is a RR day at the K let me know.

You poor soul.
I mean...uh...cool! Sounds like fun!

In all seriousness, I don't mean to insult your profession: one of the best teachers I ever had was my high school english teacher for junior and senior year.

I just could never stand teaching high schoolers.

My First Year
I think it's fun most of the time.  There are days when they test your patience, but so far it's been a positive experience.

I've been curious about it myself.
I'm in my second year teaching in college, but I've thought about teaching summer school to help make ends meet.

Is there any kind of certification needed to teach that age group?  Is it state by state?

Just a Secondary Ed Certificate
is really all that's needed in Kansas.  Most schools won't have you teaching all 6 grades in the city, I teach in a rural community so it's a little different.

Did you guys realize it's the ESPN game!
Pretty cool for Buddy's boys. God please tell me Berman will not be invovled. Actually doesn't matter as I'll turn the sound down and listen to WHB on the internet.

I'm calling in sick. No, that won't be obvious.

ESPN.com
Notes that it is unavailable on ESPN in the Red Sox and Royals markets. Just so's you know.

Game will be on
KCWE 38 the Spot for those in the KC area. It will be blacked out on ESPN. So you'll get Split and BOB DAVIS!

i'm sad
I have class at 4 up in Lee's Summit. So instead of going with my dad to the game and partaking in festivities, I will be stuck in a classroom learning about my electronic portfolio (read: the way school districts will actually know that I learned something in college/the bane of my existance for the next 3 years) and using the internet on my cellphone to update the score of the game from 4 until 6.

by loyal2theroyals on Mar 31, 2007 5:09 PM EDT reply actions

ESPN.... yes!!!!!!
Okay, I will have to cut the cold calls short and kick back in the hotel and watch the game.  Or, turn the sound down and listen to Ryan and Denny or the computer and watch the game on TV.  The scotch will be flowing on Monday.  I can feel it now.

I fell your pain Loyal2...but this to shall pass....
