Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Royals 2006 vs 2007

Per my brother's research:

More Q&D numbers (I might be a touch off here or there - I didn't get a chance to double check these while I'm acting like I'm working)....

Thru 22 games             2006           2007
  Wins                            5                7
 Offense #
  Runs                           83              85
  Hits                            176            178
  HRs                            14              19
  K's                             147            176 (ouch!)
  BB's                            57              68
 Defense
  Errors                         16               14
 Pitching #
  IP                              189             195
  R/ER                      139/125       114/97
  ERA                          5.95            4.48
  HRs allow                   28               19
  K's                            119             138
  BB's                          101              73

We're not that much different offensively.  Although, we are striking out much more without the "vortex of suckitude" than we did with him.  Swing aggressively boys!  Yeah - maybe we should concentrate on MAKING CONTACT aggressively!  Defense is slightly better (although unearned runs are up).  The real difference is pitching.  We're better at keeping the ball in the yard, and we're not putting as many free runners on base.

the pitching really is much better
although last season's start was historically bad... so maybe that isnt saying much

If anybody has the time to
check out RISP Average through the first 22 games, I would be interested between 2005-2006.

Isn't RISP
Pretty volatile? I mean, hasn't it been shown to be largely not a repeatable skill? Over time, I think it will balance out. We're just in a slump overall, not just with RISP.

Glad about the free baserunners
last year it seemed like everytime a walk was issued you knew a 3 run homer was going to follow.  HR's allowed down quite a bit too, very nice.  I'm sure it's due to the fewer walks.

We all know
That the talent this is MUCH higher than last year. Seriously, it's a matter of time before we string together some wins.

The talent is better so what is the problem
I would agree that KC has better talent in 2007 than in 2006.  I also know that it is so early in the season.  BUT the Royals are playing almost exactly the same way as in the past - mental errors, too many Ks, bullpen implosions, questionable moves during the game.

Another thing that bothers me is the comments the players make after those awful losses.  Sounds like midseason, 15 games out of first place type of comments.  The players change but the results seem to stay the same.

Could be another long summer - I would love to be wrong on this one!  One consideration for 2007 is the competition has been tough so far.  Schedule makers didn't do Royals any favors.

When you are the
second worst team in baseball...almost every team is going to be a challenge.  And we have to play everybody in the AL..so..

Did you know the "vortex of suckitude"
was originally in reference to Pena's bat?

It's true!

Vortex of Suckitude
Has been used here in reference to Berroa.

Pitching improvement
Is huge. I think I calculated that if we could shave 150 runs allowed off our total from last year, our pythag would be 70-92, and that's with our offense not improving one iota, which I think it still could once we jettison some dead weight (Emil, I'm looking at you) and some of our guys come around.
