Ken Rosenthal on Meche

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb

That's our boy's picture on FOX Sports MLB Home!

Not much in the article other than a brief mention about La Comb:

Tony Pena Jr., the Royals' new shortstop,        falls into the same category. He, too, will never hit like Hall, but his defense is so good he needs to be only adequate offensively.
Pena went 2-for-3 with two triples in the Royals' 7-1 victory over the Red Sox.
The shortstop he replaced, &$^$&#, had one triple in 474 at-bats last season.

Rosenthal's one line on Meche:

And finally, it must be said:
Gil Meche, worth every penny!

It is good to hear it at all
Meche has proven anything yet, but it is good to hear people publicly recognizing at the least the possibility that Meche will pitch well enough to warrant the money the Royals are giving him.

We're talking about a guy who everyone recognizes has great stuff who improved in some important statistical ways last year and who is only 28 years old.  That should at least provide a possibility that he can become a reliable #2-#3 quality starter.  But instead the usual reaction to Meche's contract was "Horrible deal.  He's a stiff."

Well, maybe he isn't.

Agreed
It's good that people are at least recognizing that Meche could do well here, as opposed to listening to every sports critic saying it's the worst signing of the winter.  He's 28, he still has potential and he showed it yesterday.  Hopefully, he can keep it up all year.

Maybe its just me
But I don't think Gil Meche will lose 20 games.

Did FOXSports outsouce their photo layout work?
It looks as if A-Rod's Mom team up with the Acadiana High School yearbook staff on that picture.

FIRE BELL

One thing I noticed...
When we signed him everyone said he was slow to the plate and threw over to first a lot.  I thought he went after each batter and didn't screw around much between pitches.  I don't remember him throwing over to first.  But, maybe he did.  I like that he seemed to in control of his pitches and what he wanted to do.

I will wait a month to annoint him but it was sure a fun game to be part of......

The only timed he seemed slow to the plate
...was when he was struggling in the first. I wonder if that's what they meant, by any chance?

I sat on the first base side and I don't
remember him trying to pick anybody off all day. Ortiz got a little cocky hanging off second once and I thought he should've checked him, but he didn't. He just attacked the hitter. He looked good to me.

That $11 million per year
Is going to get cheaper and cheaper every year.  With the salary inflation that we are likely to see over the next 5 years, it is quite possible that Meche is going to eventually become a bargain.

Key stats for Meche yesterday:
1 BB
0 HR
10-4 GB/FB Ratio

Obviously, he will not pitch that well every time, but those are the three key things for him, IMHO, and he passed with more than flying colors yesterday.

From casual observation while working, he sure seemed to be working at a faster pace than we were led to believe he was capable of, first inning excepted.

The standing ovation was a goosebump kinda moment. Gil himself probably is just starting to understand how hungry KC fans are for even a glimpse of a good starting pitcher. Let's hope the newfound love affair is not short-lived.

I was watching the ratio...
throughout the game, and even more impressively, once he got out of the first inning, it got much better.

There's a lot to be said for getting Meche to stay out of his head during the game and just throw the ball.
