NO MORE BAGELS...

The Kansas City Royals have announced that Panera Bread ended their partnership with the ballclub effective immediately. They will no longer be honoring the Baker's Dozen promotion when the Royals get 13 hits at home.

IMHO - What a bunch of snobs!!! They can come in, garner big publicity (we don't know the extent of their deal, but imagine free commercials on RSTN and RRN, plus stadium advertising) and then cut and run because they don't like the clientele the Royals are delivering.

Friday, April 20, the Royals crossed the 13 hit threshold with an announced attendance of 31,813 (the infamous walk-up crowd game). Someone at Panera didn't do the math - that's 413,569 bagels. They reportedly gave out around 100,000. A friend went to try and redeem them, and there was a line outside of the building. I imagine there are many stories like mine.

Anyway, just thought you'd like to know ... oh ... and the old name of Panera Bread.... St. Louis Bread Company.

Star-divide

Check it out.

Saint Louis says it all
to hell with 'em. I say we partner up with Miller Brewing company and everytime Todd Wellemeyer or Ryan Shealy play, beers are free. Trust me, we'll need them.

LOL
Can you imagine how funny it would be, what with people actually rooting for Todd Frickin' Wellemeyer to come into the game? Awesome thought.

I managed to get my bagels
but I had to go twice. They had 2 days to get prepared, too...that's the sad part. It happened on a Friday and their promotion is good for one week Sunday through Thursday. Of course they're going to have fans out of the fucking woodwork! They should have extended it to a month long rebate like it was with krispy kreme. And really, how often are the Royals going to get 13 hits and win the game?

It was hard enough to get 12 hits and LOSE.

I was unable to get my bagels
I went, they were gone.  My friends all had the same experience.  We went on different days.

Panera turned a great PR opportunity into an experience which has alienated thousands of potental customers.  Great job there Panera.

I hope some other company recogizes the potental in this situation and steps forward with some sort of give away promotion for the rest of the season.  It's a golden opportunity to get a ton of free advertising and to come out looking like the good guy company.

Denny's sorta competes with Panera.  They should give away a free Grand Slam breakfast to everyone on 12-hit days.

or a grand slam breakfast when the royals hit
a grand slam? That'd be catchy.

Niiice
Grand Slam breakfast for a Grand Slam.  Forget Sonic.

Denny's could get Denny Matthews to promote it.  Too cool.

Oh, how happy I would be
to forget about Sonic. If I never had to see that dumbass duo of nitwits on my television screen again, you don't know how happy I would be. Denny's would be so gravy.......... Damn!

I worked for Panera for two days
Back when they were "St. Louis Bread Company". I hated it. And I hate them for pulling their bagel promotion!

Jackasses in suits
The baker's dozen promotion -- fans could get 13 bagels if the Royals got 13 or more hits in a home win -- was hit once, on April 20 in the win over the Twins. That apparently was enough for Panera Bread.

"We're definitely pulling the plug," said Eric Cole, vice president of operations for the Kansas City Panera franchises.

Cole said that Panera was overwhelmed when more than 8,500 fans wanted to redeem their ticket stubs from that victory. That meant that Panera's franchises were busy pumping out more than 111,000 bagels over a five-day period.

"It was just too much," Cole said. "We were led to believe that there would be about a 15 percent redemption rate, so we figured at most it would be 20 percent. I think it wound up being about 26.7 percent from that one game.

"It takes about six minutes to prepare a bagel the way we want to. So we just had situations where we couldn't do it at certain stores for the number of fans who wanted them."

Cole said that Panera was still hoping to work out another type of promotion with the Royals.

I'll translate:
Who knew we would actually have to honor our promotion!  We thought we could have all the free advertising and not worrying about our end of the deal!  When people came in for the bagels we told them they could have, we just sent them on their way.  What else were we going to do?  Make more bagels?  That would be too much work!  Who could have planned ahead of time for extra business!  We are a company run by idiots.  Thank God we can go back to having only a few customers.

If I were Mr. Panera today, first I would fire a bunch of idiots in the KC office.  Than I would give away free bagels to everyone with a ticket to that KC game for the rest of the season.  Then I would say "Don't listen to those jackasses.  Of course the promotion will go on all year.  We'll re-evaluate in September if it isn't going so well for us.  We told the Royals fans they would have free bagels and we hope to hell we give out free bagels after  every home game because every time we give them out means another win for our beloved Royals!  The special bagel this month will be the "Tony Jalapena triple!"  Onions, Garlic and Jalapena peppers!  Can you handle it!  Well then step up to the plate!"

Now that type of corporate leadership would get my butt in a Panera seat.  As it is, I just can't see me choosing that restaurant ever again.

PS - I sent a link of this thread to the Panera
home office.  I'll let you know if they send a reply.  Maybe I shouldn't have used the word "jackass" so liberally.

You would think
the whole point of the promotion would be to get potential customers who may never have tried your bagels (or anything else, for that matter) at one of your stores to come in, be wowed by your product, and become a regular customer. In addition, there is the advertising associated by having the promotion announced at the Stadium, on the radio broadcast, and even mentioned in the newspaper.

Incredibly short-sited business decision, and typical of American management style these days - everything is about the bottom line today, the future be damned...

The smart course would have been to adjust the promotion by extending the redemption period by enough time to slow the rate of redemption to a manageable rate.

It's not rocket science, Panera!

I am probably one of about ten thousand people
who went from "Great, let's go to Panera!" to, "That is the last time I ever go to Panera!' in about 30 minutes.

Loyalpapa you are right, it is about as clear cut a case of bad management as you can find.

by James Quinn on May 1, 2007 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Indeed.
There's any number of solutions they could have tried.  They could have just waited it out, for one -- the crowds are likely to get smaller as the year goes on.

Or, instead of 13 bagels, they could have just given out one or two, but lowered the hit count to 10 or something.  I mean, it's free, and people wouldn't be too upset about it, I don't think, if it meant they continued to get something free.

Bring back Krispy Kreme!
Maybe the Royals should bring back the Krispy Kreme dozen donuts offer,if KC had 12 hits at the K,all fans would get free Krispy Kreme donuts! Hey Royals...bring back the free Krispy Kremes!

Oh ya... the donuts.... hmmmmmm...
Bring them back.... either that or I like the free beer comment too.

Panera really made a big mistake.  I wasn't a fan of the place anyway so they won't miss my business when I never go there again.  Right on JQ.....

worked for Panera
I know Eric Cole (panera's VP). He is a Jew both figuratively and literally.  He is a cheap, selfish, arrogant, POS!  Don't go to Panera ever again.
