Draft picks

When we traded some of our superstar players in the past(Dye, Damon, Beltran) would we have been better off just getting some draft picks for them?  Every other major sport does this, why not MLB?

January 2001 we traded Johhny Damon to the A's for Berroa and Hinch, we also got Roberto from the D-Rays(we also sent Oakland Mark Ellis).  Instead of those average players we could have gotten Oaklands first 3 picks in the draft: 25th Bobby Crosby, 26th Jeremy Bonderman, and 69th Neal Cotts.

August 2001 we traded Jermaine Dye to Oakland for Neifi Perez.  Colorado was involved in the deal as well, picking up a few young players, they were just happy to rid themselves of Neifi.  Instead of giving up our best player, and getting another teams salary dump/headache, we could have just traded Oakland straight up Dye for their 1st round pick.  They had the 16th overall pick and took Nick Swisher.

June 2004 we traded Beltran to Houston for Teahen, Buck, and Mike Wood.  This is one trade where the players we got would be better than the draft picks we would have got in return.

So it works both ways, but I think that teams should atleast have that option.  In a sense the smaller market teams would just be drafting for the big boys anyway.  This way atleast MLB could even the playing field.

Here is an article from MLB.com about this topic:

Also does anybody else wanna se us take Max
Scherzer out of Mizzou with our first pick?

from the KCStar Top o' the mornin:
Max is back

Former University of Missouri star Max Scherzer, the still unsigned first-round draft pick from 2006, made his debut with the independent Fort Worth Cats on Saturday night. And yes, that's the same Fort Worth that Luke Hochevar pitched for before being drafted by the Royals last June.

Scherzer, a right-hander, allowed one hit and struck out six during 3 2/3 shutout innings. His fastball was consistently in the low to mid-90s (mph).
