more on buddy
We've talked about this a lot, but I thought you all might like to see this. I'm largely in agreement with the view that, as infuriating as Buddy is, it probably doesn't make a lot of difference to wait until the end of the season. Also, we're more likely to hire somebody good in the offseason.
Ken Rosenthal on managers that could be fired:

The part about Buddy:
Buddy Bell, Royals
There's little evidence to suggest that Bell is the right choice to spark the Royals' turnaround. There's also little reason to dismiss him before his contract expires at the end of the season.
Bradford Doolittle of the Kansas City Star points out that of the 116 managers who have managed at least 1,000 games, Bell owns the second-worst career winning percentage, .413. Of course, the quality of Bell's teams has something to do with his record -- and the 2007 Royals are another stinker.
Granted, Buddy Bell isn't given much to work with, but his record is still less-than-stellar.
Bell is one of the game's most respected figures, and general manager Dayton Moore isn't likely to embarrass him, particularly when he lacks an alternative. Another disappointing finish, however, will give Moore the justification he needs to replace a manager he inherited after taking over last season.

Did I miss something?
Then again, the league and teams hold up Tony LaRussa as a character man, so what do I know?

I've heard about 100 people
Rosenthal is good, if only for how prolific he is.

Out of those managers rumored to be fired...
I like Mark Hargrove or if he gets fired Eric Wedge.

"Good baseball man"
Hargrove? The guy from Seattle?
Wedge seems good, but sometimes makes strange choices. Obvious improvement over Buddy, but that's not saying much. Seems to understand basic statistical principles, so GMDM isn't going to like that. Bonus points if he grows back his awesome pornstache.

Retro's List
I also like the idea of Buck Showalter--he's two of three for being the guy to manage you right up to the brink of your World Championship year (1996 Yanks and 2001 Diamondbacks) and may have had better luck in Texas had some pitching ever come along. Even there, a bunch of young prospects developed correctly there (Texiera, Young, et al.) as opposed to KC's list of flameouts. I thought he should have gotten the job when Pena got it (I believe he wanted it).
Super Terrific Happy Hour Choice: although he's got baggage in the US and apparently is just short of god status in Japan (check out SI's "NFL Draft Preview" issue for a great story), no one would ever accuse Bobby Valentine of lacking passion. That one's probably wishful thinking, but I remember Posnanski writing about it when Fuddo got hired, and it seemed Valentine would have had some interest.

I forgot managers with experience
I've always thought Buck Showalter was waaay overrated. Fans love him becuase they love managers that are tough on players, and many fans think their team is just a bit of hustle away from being a contender. The truth is, Showalter's teams generally don't win unless management spends a bunch of money. And that ain't gonna happen here.
There aren't a whole lot of managers with experience currently available that would interest me much. Larry Dierker won and has great ideas on pitching and is open to stats, but he's been away from the game for awhile. Joe Girardi would obviously be a great candidate, but I don't think he'll come here. Art Howe is a pretty hands-off guy, I wanted him to get the job over Buddy when he interviewed before, but honestly, I wouldn't get too excited by him.
Phil Garner and Eric Wedge could become available this winter. Wedge would be an interesting candidate.

Ah yes, Trammell and Gibby
Have a feeling Gibby wouldn't be too big into the stats, and perhaps a bit on the gritty veteran side.
