Former Royals Update from the Subway Series

It's been awhile since I've posted anything here...Work's been awful.  It's good to be back...Last Saturday I made the excursion to the "f'ing Bronx yo" to watch the second game of the subway series surrounded by a sea of drunk "Strong Islanders" sporting David Wright and Giambi jerseys and cursing like sailors.  While this experience was excruciatingly painful and only made worse by a 4-5 day by Jeter and an 11-7 Yankee win, the most interesting part of the game consisted of the individual performances of ex-Royals.

Carlos Beltran was downright awful that day - going 0-6 and popping out against Mariano Rivera for the last out in the ninth with the bases loaded.  For some reason the Yankees fans have taken to mockingly calling him "Mr. Freeze."  I asked the big Italian guy in a Thurman Munson jersey next to me why this is and he shrugged his shoulders and said, "because he's a fucking queer.  Turns your veins cold." Mmmmm...that makes perfect sense.  Anyways, who knows?  In any case I left the game with my own interpretation as to why the nickname was accurate.  Beltran, for all his talent, has never been an INSPIRING player.  He looks disinterested.  Personally, I've always thought that he has been a bit overrated throughout his career based upon his performance.  He's definitely not worth the $120 million that the Mets threw at him.

As for everyone's ex-favorite Royal-turned-object-of-disgust Johnny Damon, well he should start applying for his MLB AARP card.  He has essentially been relegated to the DH role with Melky Cabrera manning centerfield.   Honestly, Johnny looks like he's aging quickly. He went 1-4 with an RBI on Saturday but he can't run anymore, which kills his defensive value since he never had an arm anyways.  His bat also looked slow going through the zone.

Interestingly, I was most impressed with the performance of GMDM cast-off Ruben Gotay, who manned second base for the Mets and went 2-3 with a monstrous solo home run to right field (almost upper deck) two walks, and a stolen base.  Who'd we trade this guy for again?  Jeff freakin' Keppinger???  Great.   I had a suspicion we promoted and gave up on Gotay too early, and even if he didn't fit into 'THE PLAN" it would have been nice to get something of value for him return.  I guess the Bannister for Burgos trade more than offsets this one so far but still...come on...we traded for Jeff Keppinger. Nonetheless, Gotay's defense is still below average.  He botched a potential double play and let some balls through the infield that a solid second baseman would get to.

The Royals come to Yankee stadium in August.  I'll make sure to take pictures then and proudly sport the RR t-shirt. Well, that's it.  I have nothing else to say other than that Scott Elarton should toss for the Home run derby this year.
