Can We Sign Adam Dunn?

Happy Monday. The Royals now have more wins than the White Sox. The Game Thread will be up later this afternoon...-RR

Looking through the available FA first basemen, there isn't a lot of choice. I know that we could convert someone, but just for fun's sake I wanted to discuss what our realistic possibilities of signing Dunn are. He would certainly fit GMDM's philosophy of power at the corners and could be our #4 hitter for years to come. Of course, it would more than break the bank but with $11 of Sweeney's disgusting contract coming off the books, we might be able to just get a deal done. He is young, just like Meche was, and is just entering his peak years. So, basically, I was just wondering if anyone thinks we have a reasonable chance at landing Mr. Dunn. No one thought we would land Gilly last winter, so while we aren't even being mentioned as a possible suitor it still could happen. IF we could somehow sign them, imagine this lineup for the beginning of next season...

  1. DDJ - CF
  2. Teahen - RF
  3. Butler - DH
  4. Dunn - 1B
  5. Gordon - 3B
  6. Buck - C
  7. German - 2B
  8. Gathright - LF
  9. TPJ - SS
Gator could easily be replaced by someone else, maybe Lubes or Maier if they are ready, or a cheap FA. Still, that lineup is more than impressive and if we can add another starter (instead of a LF replacement for Gator) we could be a serious contender next season. Think about it, our bullpen is shaping into one of the league's better 'pens, our rotation would be decent with Meche, Banny and a FA acquisition at the top an youngsters (Pick 2: Lumsden, JDLR, Hochevar, Buckner) at the back end.

I am getting excited about next season, but this is also pending an incredibly unlikely signing of Dunn and a solid FA starter we could slide into the #3 slot in the rotation.
