All-Star Gameday Open Thread - AL at NL

Happy All-Star day to all. After a thrilling...not! (refer to "Borat" for proper use of the 'not' thing) Home Run Derby yesterday that was eventually won by Vladimir Guerrero at appoximately 3 AM EST, we turn to the actual game of games. It's the All-Star game, the game that every MLB player wants to be so darn much that the list of people who would rather not play isn't actually extremely long this year. Of course, Manny Ramirez heads the list of guys who aren't going to play. Other guys skipping out include Placido Polanco, who would've started because people didn't understand how much better Brian Roberts is, and Rockies' closer Brian Fuentes.

All-Star Lineups

American League

Ichiro Suzuki, CF
Derek Jeter, SS
David Ortiz, 1B
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Vladimir Guerrero, RF
Magglio Ordonez, LF
Ivan Rodriguez, C
Placido Polanco, 2B
Dan Haren, SP

National League

Jose Reyes, SS
Cheater, LF
Carlos Beltran, CF
Ken Griffey Jr., RF
David Wright, 3B
Prince Fielder, 1B
Russell Martin, C
Chase Utley, 2B
Jake Peavy, SP

Needless to say, we're going to remember this game for the rest of our lives or at least until the next Royals game. It should a complete and total epic experience, the likes of which shall never be matched. Hell, the outcome of the World Series is at stake, folks! This one counts!

Your pregame reading...

-I have not had a chance to read this latest article yet because I'm still catching up on the ones from earlier this month, but Carlos Gomez of The Hardball Times has done an excellent job with his draft articles. The link goes to his latest effort, which is on overrated and underrated picks, but you can navigate from that article back to the earlier ones. Good stuff.

- Baseball Prospectus is giving everyone who visits the site from today through the 15th free access to content that is usually accessible only if you have a premium account. Required reading is Will Carroll's latest article on injuries and The Week in Quotes is usually fun.

-Look, I have nothing against Mike Hargrove at all, but this article on mlb.com on him being "a winner" is hilarious given his recent managerial track record. Definitely a must if you want to see how to write an article in standard intangibly-sportswriter form.

- Fire Joe Morgan has updated since I last checked. If you don't read them on a regular basis, check them out. The blog is hilarious.

-Closer to home, marbotty weighs in on 2008, FTRF has stuff on everyone's favorite enigma, Lubanski, daveyork thinks he's located Justin Huber, and the All-Star break is apparently prediction time at Royals Review.

That's all for now. If I find something else interesting (or anyone else does) I'll post a link up here. Right now I'm trying to decide what the hell to do for Spreadsheet Baseball this week when there are no real games being played until Thursday, so that might not be up today. I'll keep you all posted. Will might randomly appear from the Caribbean at some point, as long as he hasn't been eaten by local wildlife or something.

Stupid me. I forgot: the game is on FOX at 8 PM EST, 7 PM CT, 6 PM MT, 5 PM PT, 4 PM Whatevercomesafterthattime.

I can't believe
you'd be sarcastic about the All-Star game. It's a traditional stupid pointless exercise in ridiculatum. :P

I remember
When I was a kid and saw Bo homer in the first inning in 1989, that I was pretty disappointed because I was like "so what, this is just a meaningless exhibition game that doesn't count for anything!"

But last year! Wow!! It was so cool watching Mark Redman sitting in the bullpen knowing that his contribution was helping the American League gain home field advantage in the World Series! I mean, that could have been the Royals! Do you know how huge that is? Its a huge deal and just because they used to alternate home field advantage randomly year-by-year doesn't lessen the fact that it is a big deal now!

This ESPN "Who's Now" thing
is the stupidest thing ever to appear on TV in the history of the world.

Agreed
It makes my throw up in my mouth. I don't know a single person that likes it. I hope its the reason Dan Patrick is leaving.

Patrick is leaving?
I hadn't heard that. I miss when ESPN actually let Kenny Mayne show up to work more than a day a month...

Last time I saw Mayne
he was working the booth at a second rate horse race.

Of course, I don't watch ESPN much these days.

It's a shame
because Mayne is actually a smart guy who can be quite funny. Not hip enough, of course.

Hargrove
Look, I have nothing against Mike Hargrove at all, but this  article on mlb.com on him being "a winner" is hilarious given his recent managerial track record. Definitely a must if you want to see how to write an article in standard intangibly-sportswriter form.

I can't wait when Buddy steps down/fired for all the articles about what a gritty winner he was.

How does one access the Baseball Prospectus trial?
I click on articles, but it says the content is restricted to subscribers.

I believe it's just for articles written during
the trial period.  Older content is still subject to registration.

My Time
"Stupid me. I forgot: the game is on FOX at 8 PM EST, 7 PM CT, 6 PM MT, 5 PM PT, 4 PM Whatevercomesafterthattime."

That would be Alaska Daylight Time. I think they call it that because it's daylight all the time. I mean, really, why do we need to reset our clocks? We have so much daylight some people put foil over their windows so they can sleep. It would be different if we could "save" some daylight to use in December and January, but, unfortunately, we can't.

The Angels
Waived Hillenbrand. Is he worth picking up for a RH bat and potential trade bait? He's 32, so there's no long term up side to him, but if we could grab him cheap maybe he could fit into some plan for the future. I shouldn't drink so early in the day, but it is All-Star Game Day. Yay!

But I thought someone else brought up his name a while back. He was in the news recently when he demanded to be played or traded. At least he still thinks he's good.

Still makes me sad. At least he went out with a winner. His favorite All-Star outfield was when he played with Aaron and Clemente; I don't know if it could get any better.

AL staff
While I do wish Gil would get a shot at pitching at least to one batter... I can't argue with how Leyland has set up the staff for the whole game.

Haren - never loses
Beckett - won his first 9 starts and plays for Boston
Sabathia - has been pretty much unhittable at times for championship contender
Verlander - has a no hitter and plays for Leyland
Santana - best pitcher in baseball

I can take appreciation in the fact that Gil deserves to be there... now if the AL could only string together some hits and bring some pinch hitters to the plate, we would see more pitchers
