Market for Dotel is heating up...

You can add the Yankees to the growing list of teams interested in Royals' closer Octavio Dotel.  According to Tyler Kepner of the New York Times, the Yankees are interested despite Dotel's inability to contribute last year.  As you might expect, Kepner says Dayton Moore is still asking for too much.  Prices should get reasonable in about a week.

The list of teams interested in Dotel, as far as I know: Cubs, Dodgers, Brewers, Red Sox, Rockies, Indians, Yankees.  Today the Kansas City Star also mentioned the Tigers and Braves.  I haven't seen the Phillies or Mariners mentioned in print yet but we'll see.

One other Royals note: according to Dayton Moore, the Cubs never called about Zack Greinke.

Red Sox
mlb.com reported that the Red Sox are willing to trade Crisp for bullpen help. Hopefully Dotel is worth more to somebody else. He is just a poor mans Bradley who the Royals already tried to get.

i'm holding out
for better. Coco Crisp? jeez! I thought it was a sellers market!

Coco isn't bad
not that he's a fit for the Royals. He hit .330/.362/.455 in June and .283/.377/.547 in July. Add in that he hurt his finger reslly badly last year and almost died from the flu or something, and his excellent D, and he's turning it around.

I'm hearing that Dotel may stay
And GMDM's words on the matter and his high-asking price may confirm that.  I guess there's some logic to this - although it would be great to receive a Loney, Kemp, or Saltalamacchia for Dotel, teams are reluctant at the moment.  Why sell yourself short?  Dotel has an option for next year and if he walks, the Royals receive a first round compensation pick for him, which in the long run could end up being more valuable than a B prospect or Coco Crisp in return.

No draft pick compensation
I'm pretty sure we wouldn't get any draft pick compensation for Dotel. Compensation is based on your performance the last three years, and Dotel has pitched a grand total of 25 innings in the two seasons prior to this one.

We really should move him if we can. I read one column saying its doubtful we could even get Tony Abreu from the Dodgers, must less Loney or Kemp. Still, there are a lot of buyers, and someone might be willing to overpay a bit. I just think its more likely we land two mediocre prospects, rather than one stud.

can somebody tell me
why riske isn't being mentioned in the same vein as dotel for trade bait?  hasn't he been even more dominant, not to mention less injury prone?  is it just because dotel has better stuff?  i just don't know why riske's not drawing more attention.

Exactly
We have a team option on David Riske for next season and I see absolutely no reason why we'd trade him.  Unless we are completely blown away by an offer I'd say that Riske should stay here in KC.  I heard his family even lives in the KC area now.  I think if we can't sign him to an extension we should at least pick up his option after the season.

Yankees
If they trade for Dotel, it'll be one of the stupidest moves I've seen over the last year. They signed him to a one year contract without an option, in effect paying him to rehab from TJ surgery. The option was needed to make that deal work. Now, if they trade for him this year they'll give up a prospect to get him back. The Yankees are no good at detail work.

right on...
this dotel thing is Cashman's problem in a nutshell.  TJ surgery is one of the most predictable things in baseball.  there's ALWAYS a period of rustiness where the pitcher struggles with command, usually a couple months.  but Cashman somehow didn't get the bulletin on that because he signed dotel to a contract that only included his recovery period and then he didn't go after him once he was healthy!  i for one LOVED the dotel signing because he was absolutely dominant when he was healthy, and only started to get hit once he started having elbow trouble.  and Moore signed him at the exact time that TJ rehabs get back to pre-surgery form.  of course, the Yankees understand the concept of sunk cost as well as any franchise in professional sports, so i doubt that they'll let their ego get in the way of making a trade that can strengthen their team.

he might be worth even more...
now that gagne might be extended.

that would make him the clear cut best reliever on the market, meaning we could get more than expected.

You guys are expecting too much
I'd be happy with 2 mid tier prospect, more than happy actually. To think that we can get guys like Loney for him is ridiculous.

Maybe not just for Dotel...
but add another player and Loney becomes a possibility.

Neither Loney nor Kemp will happen
That is way too much.  Dotel plus a throw-in won't get either of those guys.  If we throw in Greinke, then it is a possibility.  But I certainly don't want that.

Frankly, I doubt Laroche would happen.  Dotel is just a rental.  Rentals rarely bring top prospects.

I'd be happy with
Greg Miller...I'm kidding, I'm kidding

I'm going to be okay with any of the below
Tony Abreu
Ivan De Jesus
Hong-Chih Kuo
Jonathan Meloan
Josh Bell
Tim Lincecum

Let's go Royals! And Let's go Timmeh!
