RSTN

Can anyone understand why RSTN doesn't broadcast every game?  I know we are small market and all but it's 2007 for Christ sake.  What better way to get more exposure than to televise every game.  I think this is the last year of RSTN's contract, does anyone know what's going on with the Royal's tv contract starting next year?

Money
It is expensive to put on a game, and its not worth it to televise every game. I don't think there are too many teams that televise every game.

Consider yourself lucky! When I was a kid, no home games were ever televised and only 60 or so road games were televised!

Back In My Day
It was 40 road games per year, sponsored by Hamms beer. And the A's were as bad as it gets.
Being a fan is irrational, but what is the alternative?

I understand not putting some
games on tv because they want people down at the K. But, that should be no more than a handful of times per month. This almost two week Royal drought is crazy. They aren't broadcasting even one game of the Seattle or Tampa Bay series. It gets better after the break (something like 18 out of 19), but we look silly having stretches like this with no games on tv.

As far as the TV contract
FOX Sports gets it next year.

I also read today in the Star that the Royals radio rights are up for grabs. WHB had an option, but declined, although they say they're still interested in being the carrier. 980/Entercom, the longtime rights holder before WHB, wants it back.

Fox Sports
If FSN gets it next year then I bet we even get less televised games.  FS Midwest is already St. Louis biased so they will get 1st dibs on all games.  I love listening to HOF Denny Matthews but still miss watching the games live.

I'm wondering
If this means we'll get our own Fox Sports channel, like Fox Sports Great Plains or Fox Sports Kansas City.

I've been waiting for a long
time for them to do that. It's like the old west cowboy saying: "This network ain't big enough for the two of us." when it comes to both KC and STL.

Me too
I can understand not televising about a few home games a month, but this many games not being televised is ridiculous.  I don't think it matters what has been done in the past either, this is 2007 and we should have the capabilities to televise every game.  It is flat out ridiculous that not even one game of the Devil Rays series is going to be on TV.

Market size, viewership and money
That is what determines how many games anyone is going televise.  In New York, they know they will get a huge number of viewers for every Yankees and Mets game because of the market size.  So, all 162 games of each team are televised.  In KC, the market size is much smaller (and the team has a recent history of many losing seasons), so they will have many fewer viewers.  So, of course, they (and other small market teams) are not going to televise every game.

This is not a competency issue for RSTN, nor is it a lack of interest on their part.  They want to maximize profits, period.  That is all any business cares about.  They are going to televise the number of games that maximizes profit for them.  FSN will do the same thing next year.

More winning seasons will increase fan interest in the Royals, driving up both attendance and viewership for televised games.  But, as a small market team, the are structural limitations to the profits that can be derived from the franchise, but for the team and for those who televise their games.

Very well put
It is basic business, period.

Which is also why
They skimp on the production values and we're left with the equivalent of a public access cable show.
