Big Start Friday

So, I figured they would trade for a young position player, maybe with a little power. Nope.

OK, so, we got a struggling pitcher from Atlanta (warning) for Dotel. They'll keep him in AAA (where he was recently demoted) and let him work things out a little before working him into the Royals rotation, right? Wrong.

Work him into the rotation in a low impact game? Wrong again.

Kyle Davies will have his first start for the Royals in Yankees stadium. Welcome to the team, Kyle; you've been given the honorary "Eduardo Villacis" position in our rotation. Make us proud. And the way we're playing against the Twins right now, we might be riding a 4 game losing streak.

I suppose it's possible he'll go out and toss 7 scoreless on "the big stage" and Moore will look like a genius. And Davies track record says he's good when he gets himself "up" for these types of situations.

It's also possible to run across the street with your eyes closed in rush hour traffic and not get killed (paraphrasing another poster) and you might also get three HRs out of a lineup that includes Jasons Smith and LaRue. It doesn't make either a good idea.

It's also very possible that Davies will implode, essentially killing any "change of scenery" bonus gained from the trade. McClure and the Royal's coaches will have had zero opportunity to make any significant improvement with him and the catchers will barely know his stuff. A disastrous performance will destroy almost as much fan good will as the infamous "Elarton Start".

What's the hurry? Why immediately into the rotation? Is 4th place worth making the same mistakes they made with the guy in ATL? Does he replace JDLR or Nunez, both young players who have performed better than he has to date? I don't understand.

How about a no-hitter?
Hiram "Exalted One" Davies would arrive in Kansas City as a conquering hero.

Friday's start is only big for some fans
Moore acquired Davies for the future, not because he thinks he'll help us get to .500 this year.  I would have thought that having Davies work on his game in AAA would make the most sense.  Moore thinks it would benefit his development most to be in the major league rotation.

Considering what Moore and his staff (including front office staff, scouts and coaches) have done to identify, acquire and develop talent, I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt.

It was pointed out by someone on WHB radio yesterday (Soren Petro, I think) that the Royals coaching staff (most credit goes to McClure) helped/fixed/improved the mechanics of both Meche and Bannister which has helped to make them into really good pitchers this year.  If Moore thinks Davies can benefit from that, then I'll agree with him.

Moore's decisions have worked in the recent past, particularly with regard to pitchers.  Why do so few Royals fans trust him?

---

If Davies goes out on Friday and gets shelled, many posters on this site will say, "Thanks Moore, Davies sucks.  You wasted our best piece of trade bait."   But we won't really know about Davies until at least sometime next year, maybe years from now.  Clearly he isn't a good major league pitcher right now.  He was acquired because Moore thought he would develop into one.  Let's give him some time to do that.  It will take time.  Hopefully most Royals fans will have the sense to show some patience.

[Note, if Davies has a good or even great start in the Bronx, that won't mean that the trade was a great one.  Nothing that happens in a single start is in itself dispositive as to how good a pitcher is, or will be in the future.]

I'm willing to give Davies th benefit of the doubt
It looks like a lot of his problems over the last year or so have been the result of both being new to the majors and suffering a groin injury.

And while I would be the first to agree that one start doesn't make a pitcher, I will also say that I will feel a whole heckuva lot better about the trade if he dominates on Friday.

22 years with no playoffs
I think we have "earned" the right to be impatient.

I haven't agreed with much of what you have posted
But I really do agree with you here. Seems like a poor choice to have him make his debut in the AL. I'd let him work on his mechanics in AAA for a bit first.

I would have given Nunez the start and
if he went his usual five...then bring in Davies in off the bench.  How does Davies get on the roster...why, we release Reggie...just let him roam free....

Not sure I get this either
Yankee Stadium has got to be the worst place to throw him out there, especially the way the Yanks have been swinging the bats. You do wonder, what's the rush to promote him to the bigs, with Nunez coming off a good start?

Now with JDLR on the DL... we see why he is
starting... Does anyone know what happened to Jorge?
