Wily Mo Pena

Well, to those that actually thought about trading some useful parts of us for Wily Mo, he cleared waiver today. I don't know why, but I thought we should have made a claim. No biggie though, more than likely, Wily Mo isn't going to do a whole lot the rest of the year. And we have a OF overflow problem.

I never liked the idea of getting Wily Mo and paying anything more than "nothing" anyway. He could be a superstar, but he's had so many problems hitting for contact that I don't think he can ever be more than a 4th OF.

Im attracted
to any change made in the roster, especially considering his upside. If we cut Emil...

Exactly
There were absolutely no change in this roster worth mentioning.  Put Emil out there and bring in Wily Mo why not.  That guy has hit some moon shots he is no better than Emil he strikes out and hits some homeruns the only difference I see is when in Cincinnati and in Boston he's never really been given the chance to play everyday.  Plus you can't get Emil to sign an autograph to save his life on a personal note.  Wily Mo might be more fan friendly.

Wily Mo
When he does make contact though he has some amazing power.

How Come LF Is Such A
Problem for us to fill when Boston has essentially had 5 LFers since 1939 (Williams, Yaz, Rice, Greenwell and Man Ram)? I'd love to see Wily Mo out there if it costs us little to put him there.

I Think This Is As Good
As it gets with our current roster against a RHP:

AB R H RBI BB K LOB Season Avg
D. DeJesus cf 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 .283
M. Grudzielanek 2b 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 .308
M. Teahen rf 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 .284
B. Butler dh 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 .301
R. Gload 1b 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 .295
A. Gordon 3b 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 .240
J. Buck c 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 .231
J. Gathright lf 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 .352
T. Pena Jr. ss 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 .277
 Totals 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
Sure, we could swap Gload and Gordon, but it's still good. There's an argument for German at 2nd, but I'll take Gritz for now.

This bears a striking resemblence to a big league lineup; 1-5 all over .280, 6 and 7 have good pop and are better than averages indicate, Gator is ridiculous lately and Pena is hardly embarrassing at 9. Probably our best defensive team, too; at least Gator is quick getting to the ball.

seems odd he cleared waivers
well, maybe we'll trade for him?

by marbotty on Aug 7, 2007 7:51 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Oh
and other Royals fan favorite Eric Byrnes is re-signed today. I'd be horribly upset if the Royals gives him the contract that the D-Back just gave him. 3yr 30mil.
Let's go Royals! And Let's go Timmeh!

agreed.
he isnt worth that much $$$. glad we stayed away...

They gave what to who????
Billy Beane's castoff got what???  I am glad the Royals stayed away from that trainwreck...

by grudz69 on Aug 8, 2007 12:21 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yet the Royals
are not afraid to go after John Schuerholtz castoff Kyle Davies?

Don't get this...

at all...

(still upset)

Let's go Royals! And Let's go Timmeh!

by playingwithfire on Aug 8, 2007 1:40 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

who would you have wanted
besides kyle davies?

many of the names rumored to be offered really werent and davies was probably the best guy we could get.

he is only 23, under our control until 2011 and has great stuff.

by rockchalk on Aug 8, 2007 12:22 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wasn't Balentien
of the Mariners offered?

I want him

Let's go Royals! And Let's go Timmeh!

by playingwithfire on Aug 8, 2007 1:44 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No
Moore said he wasn't offered.  Several people at BP said they thought it highly unlikely that he was offered.

by NYRoyal on Aug 8, 2007 3:15 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well
Then Davies isn't bad, it's just highly unlikely he works out.
Let's go Royals! And Let's go Timmeh!

i would have preferred
balentien or even franklin gutierrez or chin lung hu or tony abreu.

however, i am fine with getting davies for 2 months of dotel. davies at least has the potential to be good down the road, whereas dotel is ont he downside of his career.

still a good trade, just not as good as it could have been...

Well, some of Beane's
"castoffs" have turned out great: Miguel Tejada. Whereas those he chose to keep, not so much: Mark Kotsay.

$30 million is not that much in the current market. Since 2003, including this season, Byrnes has had 3 league average or slightly above league average years, 1 awful year and 1 mediocre year. If you assume that he can be league average at the corners, and add in the fact that he can play center, this isn't that much of an overpay. FWIW, BPro's PECOTA values him over the next 3 years at about ~$23 million.

I am pretty surprised by this,
why would no club, including the Royals, not claim him?  I know he goes into arbitration next year, but he still will not be very expensive.  And good lord, the guy has power.  If someone could teach him to make more contact.  And he has hit for a decent average at times in the past.

by James Quinn on Aug 7, 2007 10:42 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't know why
You wouldn't put in a claim on Pena, cut Emil and play Pena every day. Next July, if he shows off some power, you can flip him for prospects. He's a FA after next year I believe.

This time of year though, lots of guys slip through waivers because everyone in baseball is placed on waivers.

Pena vs. Gathright
You can only play one of them everyday.  Don't we want to see how good Gathright is, and if he can maintain a .400 OBP, .400 SLG?

If Gathright can do that, he's a cheap part of the Royals future for multiple years.  If Pena develops, we'd have him for one more year and then he's on the FA market, out of our price range and we've developed him for another team.

by NYRoyal on Aug 7, 2007 11:44 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

agreed.
i like gator better, im glad we just stuck with him compared to the 2008 FA bound pena.

Dare I say it
Trade Teahen?
Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com

by RoyalsRetro on Aug 8, 2007 9:34 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Trade Teahen to make room for Pena?
That makes no sense.  Teahen is going to be good and cheap for a while now.  We don't know if Pena will be any good and he's a FA after 2008.

If we acquire Pena, the best case scenario is that he is good with the Royals for one year.  And then he's gone.  How does that help us in our contending years?  It keeps us from developing Gathright, who could be good and cheap for multiple years.

Lubanski takes over someday
I don't see Teahen as ever being that great.

You like Lubanski more than Teahen?
Boy, I don't see that at all.

I think the Royals should trade DeJesus and move Teahen to CF where his hitting would actually be very valuable.  If they could get a good, young OFer with power, I'd do it in a second.  And DeJesus has some value given that he's a good CFer, good leadoff hitter and he has a cheap, multi-year contract.

Go Gator....
I hope the new manager appreciates him.  Or, he could be just someone who like steroid enhance behemoths...waiting for the next homer.

by grudz69 on Aug 8, 2007 1:01 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Pena
as much as I would love to have him the lineup.  One has to wonder too, how much sitting on the bench and the lack of playing time has hurt his ability.  He had that problem with the Reds, now with the Red Sox.  I am shocked nobody claimed him.  There are teams that need OF's worse than we do that just seems odd to me.

by lordbyronk on Aug 8, 2007 8:31 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Speaking of Byrnes
Rumor has it that the Diamondbacks are trying to get rid of Carlos Quentin. I definitely wouldn't mind our making a move to pick him up.

by Moose Tacos on Aug 8, 2007 12:55 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah
Wonder what they would want for him?  I think this would be an astute move by DM if what we give up is not too costly.

There will likely be several teams interested, though, so we might have to give up a guy like Greinke.  Wonder if they wanted Dotel?

by marbotty on Aug 8, 2007 1:25 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That would be an awesome trade,
but it could take some talent to make that happen and D-backs need pitching.  However, Quentin's stock has fallen a lot this year, it would be the perfect opportunity to buy low and get power for a low cost.  Good Call.

by lordbyronk on Aug 8, 2007 5:14 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'd like picking up Quentin
But I definitely would give them Greinke.
