Kansas City attendance up significantly in 2007

This afternoon I went out and bought 13 tickets to the Royals - Yankees game on Saturday.  A group of faculty and graduate students from the History department are going to the game together.  For four of the caravan it will be their first Royals game!

Anyway, I was told the game was sold out except the upper deck seats.  This was a little surprising to me and got me thinking, how is the Royals attendance this year?  Are more people going to the K now that the team is playing respectable ball?

Average KC home attendance
2007 - 20,157 (28th)
2006 - 16,901 (28th)
2005 - 17,356 (29th)
2004 - 21,031 (28th)
2003 - 22,819 (22nd)
2002 - 17,182 (27th)
2001 - 18,967 (27th)

Bottom line, KC loves a winner!  Attendance is up over 3,000 per game.  KC will go over 1.5 million in attendance this year.

I remember in the 1980's several teams would annually draw under one million per year, and any team that could break the two million mark was considered to be doing well.   Anyone who says baseball is not as loved today as it was in the past needs to look more closely at the past.  I remember reading about classic rivalry games of the past, St. Louis vs. Brooklyn during the 1950's, and five or six thousand fans would come out to the pennant race games.  In the mid-1980's Pittsburg at times drew less than 2,000 for home games.  The Dodgers and Blue Jays were the only clubs at the time drawing 40,000+ for home affairs.  Perspective.
