Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Trip to Fanfest...

I'm a pseudo-anti-social dude...I get out a lot...just not a big fan of formal events or crowded places...you can normally count me out on a 5:30pm Walmart run...but I figure a crowd of Royals fans would be pretty easy going...I had my hopes, and I had my doubts...particularly I didn't really think a 27 year old would feel particularly mature while standing in line to get an autograph from a 22 year old (it would of been a lot funner with a kid, but I kinda felt like a douche with just my wife)...normally, I would set back and just not care, but I figure, "Hey, I spend a lot of my time watching/listening to/caring about/writing about the Royals, so I might as well meet 'em and see what its all about"...plus when I buy a new home soon I'm turning my computer office into a "Royals Room," so I need some more souvenirs to fill it...and I had paid time off from work, so off I went to Fanfest with my pregnant wife...

first impression---CROWDED, way to effing crowded...but it was fun...good time music roaring, people swatting at batting cage zingers, powder blues to the left and right, cotton candy, funnel cakes, friendly ushers/staff, fellow fans, little kids with that gleam of excitement in their eye...I thought, "this is gonna be fun"...I'll just break down my experience:

my main goal for the day was to meet and maybe get a picture with Alex Gordon...my wife got off work a little late, so we showed up a little late (4:45)...jumped in the line for an autograph from Gordon and 5 other Royals...

after standing in line for 30 minutes and moving about 10 feet, I spot Seitzer and McRae signing autographs and the line is somewhat small, and then I see Denny Matthews and a short line...

wife keeps spot in line, while I wait 30 minutes or so for the highlight of the day...met Denny Matthews...dude has a serious handshake...super nice and spent his time talking to each fan...I had my Tales from the Royals Dugout book with me and they (Denny and author Matt Fulks) were impressed...I told Denny I had been listening since I was a kid and that the book was very good...I realized the person with Denny was the co-author and asked him why he wasn't signing anything...Denny was laughing, saying something like, "he wrote the whole darn book and he's just sitting there not signing anything!"...Fulk said, "I'm just having fun watching you," and we all had a laugh...the previously bored Fulks was mildly entertained...while Denny signed my book I told him its good that he did the book, so that people like me (younger/not around for the start of the organization) could get a real feel for how the Royals came to be presently...Matt Fulks signed my book "To Shane-from one fan to another- Matt Fulks" and gave me a very friendly handshake and goodbye...funny that the most meaningful autograph of the day wasn't from a Royal...

back to the other autograph line...so its been roughly an hour for my wife waiting in line...so I buy her a soda and let her walk around...she comes back and we realize we've missed Gordon (lotta people were looking to meet Gordon, if he has a decent year, he will be a star in K.C.), and that we've now been waiting in line for an hour and a half, and just say the hell with it...I mean I didn't want to hang for another 2 hours just to get 6 autographs...I really had hoped to get everyone there to sign my baseball...GRRRR

took in the atmosphere and crowd...checked out the merchandise and it was pretty cool...game worn Monarchs hats and what not...pretty cool stuff for not all that pricey...still, just realizing the excitement around the Royals right now, it was really, really crowded...

very short line for a Bannister picture, so we jumped in...royaldaddy was right about Bannister...first class, top notch dude... shook my hand saying, "Hi, I'm Brian"...really nice, but not that creepy televangelist nice, like that trustworthy "I'm-truly-glad-to-be-here" niceness...convinced my wife to jump in the pic and she was shy as the pic shows, but thought Brian was nice...I said, "you gonna win the Cy Young?"...he said, "NO" and gave me a funny sigh...I said, "well, if you can stay healthy I don't see why you wouldn't have a shot,"...Bannister replied heartily, "Thank You", with a nod...

that wrapped up our day at Fanfest...we left early to go eat and take the dog out...it was fun and extravagant and also mildly disappointing...I think with some changes (single person autograph lines) it would be really good...maybe a bigger area (bet they didn't realize that many people would show up)...thank you for listening to my pseudo-exciting day...I know my grammar is uncalled for, but my intentions are proper  (Bannister pic coming soon)...peace out

Cool!
Great wrap up. I must admit, I have reservations about being a grown man and asking to take pictures with athletes. Oh well, its all in fun.

Are there lots of opportunities to take pictures with players? I'm not interested in autographs, I want pics!

Also, they were selling game worn Monarchs caps?!?!? For how much?

first off...
misunderstanding, I think, on the Monarchs thing...game worn throwback modern day Monarchs hats...50 bux...thought about the Billy Butler (it fit perfect)...but I've got an impending mortgage and kid on the way, so I opted out, after much thought...it does go to Royals charities tho, but I'm strangely anti-charity (please don't ask me to explain, it just falls under the Ewing Kauffman, "if a man asks for food, you don't give him a fish, but a fishing pole"...or something like that)...

pics line was OK, but I only saw the line for Pena and then Bannister...I wonder if I would of stayed 'til 9 if it would of gotten better...the disappointing thing is that they don't tell you who is coming up next for pictures and its only one at a time...I really wanted a Gload pic, but who knows if they even did that...the program was a little off on the timeline of events also...little things you know

Thanks for the story
Those events aren't fun for people (like me) who don't love big crowds, long lines and lots of waiting.  It's good that you got to meet Bannister.  From the interviews with him that I've read, he sounds like the Royals player I'd most like to sit and have a conversation with.
I probably disagree with you.

by Scott McKinney on Jan 18, 2008 11:41 PM EST reply actions

yes indeed...
Bannister is underrated in every category...

on the whole event scheme...I guess I'm just training for when the kid comes...I don't wait for ANYTHING...so it was a learning experience...I imagine if John Lennon was at the end of the line I could of waited for another 2 hours

good story
I think it was a bit crowded too. The autograph lines were really long. I had been waiting in line for a while & they stopped on the person right in front of me. I wasn;t happy.
I met 11 players & took pics with TPJ, Meche, Braun & Shealy.

Hopefully tomorrow I get one with Teahen.

Hey Fatty, you got it made.
A lovely wife who waits in line for hours to meet baseball players.  You just do not get more lucky than that in life.

Nice pic.  Everyone looks happy.

Good times bro
I thought they did a nice job, but they could have done a little better. The damn music playing in the batting cages made it so that us in the autograph line on the west side of the room couldn't hear anything on the stage. I bought some merchandise for my kids and thought about getting a game worn Brazell jersey (there were some game worns of some crazy players. Pickering, Mendy Lopez, Riske, Clapinski). 95 bucks was just a little steep for me. They had a some new Billy Butler powder blues for half price because he has changed numbers. I also notices that Bannister has changed numbers. Butler is now 16 (Reggie Sanders old #). Bannister is now 19 (I don't know who held that one last year). And Gordon is now 4 ("El Diablos" old #). Glad you had a good time. We should've met up.

a game worn Brazell or Mendy Lopoez

awesome

but not for $95

Alright
NO MORE CHANGING NUMBERS!  It's killing me from wanting to get a jersey.  What do I do with my Gordon #7 or Butler #21 or Banny #40 or Buck #2 or Gload #11 (he's now #7) or Macfarlane #8 (ended up #15) or Saberhagen #31 (ended up #18) jerseys?  No more of this switching, even though I'm glad Gordon went to #4 because I'm a big Favre fan.

fanfest
I also had a great time last night.  I am lucky enough to have a 4 and 6 year old so it's not creepy to get autographs, but there is NO WAY these 2 kids are standing in line that long to get autographs.  We did stand in line so they could hit whiffle balls at the HR derby.  my 6 year old got a couple into the outfield (I was so proud!).  The best are the dads that are coaching their 5 year olds with "Keep your hands back" or "Wait on it" or Short step" or "follow through, son!"  Like the 5 year old has any clue what dad is talking about.  My 4 year old wasn't even looking at the pitcher and swinging in a 360 motion, going round and round.  I think he accidentally made contact once.  Did I coach him?  Nope.  I was busy taking pictures and wondering if I could hit a whiffle ball over the fake scoreboard.  MY wife said I wasn't allowed to try.

Went today
Meh. It really needs to be in a larger venue. Maybe Bartle Hall or something like that. The turnout today was enormous. The lines were insanely long. I didn't even bother with trying to get an autograph or picture with anyone.

They should put the stage in a different room, because its very hard to hear what anyone is saying. I was most interested in the segment with Trey, but I really couldn't hear what he was saying, and when I could hear, it was answering some question like "what is your favorite kind of music" so I left in the middle of it.

This would probably have been cooler had I brought an eight year old son rather than my 30 year old drinking buddy. I did enjoy the stuff on the stadium renovations, the MLB exhibits, and I did get a few pics of Brian McRae, Joey Gathright, Miguel Olivo and David DeJesus in passing.

I sound like a grumpy old man!

today was really crowded.
I ended up in a line that they moved us. We started off on one side of the place, then we had to move to the other side of the place & get even further behind in the line. But I did get some autos in that line, so it's ok. Today I got with Duckworth, Teahen, Guillen, Lumsden, & German in pictures. I met Butler, Mahay, Olivo, Bale & Barnett in the autograph line.

And I got the all of my pictures up from yesterday & today here.

So far, Guillen has been the model player
Happy to be here and saying all of the right things.  It's good to see that he at least starts out on the right foot and is grateful for what the Royals have invested in him.  Gload on the other hand got a little bit of money and he seems to be acting like an arrogant prick.
I probably disagree with you.

by Scott McKinney on Jan 19, 2008 10:56 PM EST up reply actions

Not so fast
New story on the team's website says that Guillen has already started causing problems. He said in a interview something to the effect of "I'm not playing left field." I guess he and Dayton had a little talk and now he's changed his tone a little.

by royaldaddy on Jan 19, 2008 11:49 PM EST up reply actions

Mark Teahen on Guillen
I don't know how much should be read into Teahen's choice of words, but:

"I have heard all the stories that he might be a tough teammate. I was gonna hold judgment until I met him. I got the opportunity to meet him when they announced him in Kansas City and talked to him for the better part of one night. For the most part he didn't rub me the wrong way he seemed like a good guy. The one thing I do know about him I have seen the way he plays by playing against him he gets after it everyday. He just seems like a ball player and those are the guys Dayton Moore are going after guys who play the game right and I can't ask for more than that as a teammate." - Mark Teahen on new teammate Jose Guillen

link.

"For the most part he didn't rub me the wrong way," is pretty loaded wording.  But then again I am pre-disposed to expecting Guillen to be an ass in every way to every individual at all times.  Habits, history and all.  Why would he change now that he is on team number nine and has a bit more money in his pocket.  But we can always hope for radical change for no discernable reason.  Royals fans are used to doing such things.

by James Quinn on Jan 20, 2008 12:06 AM EST up reply actions

I agree that sounds a little bad
But I think maybe we're reading into it too much.  A lot of guys, when interviewed on tv, don't put a whole lot of care into choosing their words.

That turn of phrase very well could have been just a verbal crutch.  I'm also a bit skeptical of the accuracy of transcripts that are riddled with grammatical/punctuation errors.

Had a GREAT Time! 29 Autographs!
I had a great time at the FanFest, I thought the Royals did a good job making this whole thing happen.(screwed up the map though)Yes I am a highschooler so I wasn't embarrassed with getting autos from all the players as some of you are. I was surprised at the awesome turnout and hope that it will turn into a great 2008 season. I got a BP hat for only $15, and was this close to getting a game worn jacket or jersey from the charity shop. I got 29 autographs total in the 2 days. I DIDN'T GET GORDON THOUGH!!! But that's okay. Guillen seems like a nice guy, he signed #6 on his signature for my friend and was like
"Why do I keep doing that? I can't get used to #11. Why did I even change my number" haha it was great. I met Trey and he is really friendly and has a good personality, the same for DM. Overall, I was extremely satisfied with the 29 autos and am looking foward to it next year hopefully.

Yeah I was exhausted by the end of the day
funny part about it is that I only got half of the autographs in sessions
