Posnanski: Royals Leading Santana Race?

I thought this was pretty amusing...

http://joeposnanski.com/JoeBlog/2008/01/24/royals-leading-santana-race/

KANSAS CITY -- Kansas City Royals general manager Dayton Moore on Wednesday did not deny that his team is very close to completing a trade for Minnesota Twins ace Johan Santana.

"That's a ridiculous question," he said, when asked why his team just didn't go out and trade for Santana.

Santana won Cy Young Awards in 2004 and 2006 and is widely regarded as the best pitcher in the game. His presence in the Royals rotation would give them their first true ace since Kevin Appier in the 1990s. it is widely believed among baseball sources that if the Royals had a rotation featuring Johan Santana, Gil Meche, Brian Bannister and Zack Greinke, they would be better than they have been the last few years.

Over the last few weeks, several teams -- in particular the New York Yankees, Mets and Boston Red Sox -- have been rumored to be close to acquiring Santana, so it would be quite a coup for the "small-market" Royals to beat them to the bunch. As one scout who would prefer to remain anonymous said on Tuesday when first told about this potential Santana-to-the-Royals trade, "Are you drinking and taking medication at the same time?"

The Royals will end up as the winner
in the Santana race.

That is, after the Twins don't trade him and end up getting nothing in return for losing his services other than a draft pick, which will boost the Royals above the Twins the following year.

If we were to try for Santana, what would we have to give up? Gordon and Butler together? Joe, you're a riot. I especially like "3. He would no suck." Bill James, are you looking for a new analyst?

I'm still waiting
For the alleged Alex Gordon for Alex Rodriguez deal to happen.

We wouldn't have need to trade Gordon
A-Rod was a free agent. One year of him, of course, would have cost as much as three years of Guillen, but wow, it would have been nice to see.

Hey
the Twins need OF's maybe for Gator, Costa, Huber and Lubanski we can get this trade done.  Really what is taking the Twins so long, any of the rumored offers from Boston or the NY teams seem better than just getting a draft pick for the best pitcher in baseball.

No way the Twins turn that down
If Dayton offered that package I can't believe the Twins would turn it down. It is just too tempting.

I would even throw in Duckworth or maybe even Jason Smith.

Never mind, I could never part with Jason Smith. His grit is irreplaceable.

thank god man
trading away jason smith?

I was going to have to reach across the internet and slap you.

uh
You seriously undervalue Jason Smith.

Smith puts Morneau to shame. Maybe if they also threw in Mauer, but even then, it would be hard to part with a great player like Smith.

Hilarious article
A brilliant mockery of MLB's self-endowed 'parity'.  It's ridiculous to think the Royals would ever enter the Santana sweepstakes, and there's something drastically wrong with that.

But do the Twins still have Matt LeCroy?  I would part with Gordon, Meche, and Butler for that chock-full-o'-grit chubby man!
