Baseball Mogul

I'm wondering if anyone else at Royals Review plays Baseball Mogul or other statistically based computer baseball simulators. Just in case anyone else shares this nerdish leaning (people who've walked in while I was playing the game have speculated that I was preparing taxes), I wanted to start a thread for people to discuss their experiences with these games, strategies, what they've learned about general managing, etc. I've found the game very educational regarding payroll, arbitration and the amateur draft, but as I quickly learned that few non-players want to hear me discuss the awe-inspiring 102-60 2015 Royals, I figured this might be the place to find like-minded enthusiasts.

I have simulated
Each of the last few seasons on Diamond Mind Baseball. Its different from Baseball Mogul in that you don't deal with front office stuff like ticket sales. I like it quite a bit and I think its pretty realistic.

I just bought Football Mogul, but haven't gotten around to starting a season yet. Anyone have any advice for that? Any reviews?

Love it....
I play in a league online, that started in the year '1955' and is currently in '1990'. Unfortunately I am the Brewers...
Finally coming back to the 'K'!!!! I'm going to be there 7/11/08, vs the SEA Mariners, of course!

Start out as the Seattle Pilots?

I love this game
I've played through it quite a few times. Its really not that hard, even on the expert level as long as you're willing to take a dive the first couple seasons.

The key is to max out your scouting and farm system budgets, then trade for the players with the highest ceiling and trade away any big contracts for mediocre players. Its sort of a Florida Marlins slash-and-burn approach, but hey, it works in the game and you don't have to deal with media pressure. Oh, and look at all the scouting attributes over stats.

I completely lose track of time when playing this game. Damn, makes me want to go play it again.

Another key to success
Sadly, I didn't discover this for thirty seasons, but I've won three straight World Series since. Instead of swapping high-priced players for mediocre players, I've started trading any underachieving veteran/star young player at a surplus position for cash. So, you have an aging 91-level shortstop with a 93-peak guy waiting in the wings at AAA: You can get 100 million dollars cash for him, from, say, The Yankees, and use that to buy the top two or three free-agent pitchers and sluggers. Obviously, trades for cash, especially for star players, aren't too common in real life, but they're gold in this game if you want to stay in constant contention without any Marlins-style lean years.

Another strategy that's helped me is repeatedly trading two or three decent prospects for the #1 overall pick, who almost always becomes a perennial All-Star. That's one way to counteract the problem of drafting 24th-30th every year.

Question about Baseball Mogul
When you draft, do you draft fictional players or historical players?

Blend of both
If you choose a 1905-2006 team, you draft real players. But as you continue into the future (you can control a team for up to 400 seasons), they become fictional.

by andrewmiller on Jan 31, 2008 6:48 PM EST up reply actions

Did you mean 400 or 40.
I just wonder bc I have never played the game.  And I like the sound of 400 never have to start over and you get a chance to fix any mistakes you might have made.  Also can you get fired.

i play around on WHATIF Sports from time to time
honestly though, i have to treat these sorts of things like my desire to own a PS2 and play NCAA F on dyansty mode for 4 hours a day

i really want to, but I'm already so lazy as it is, i cant tempt myself

my first two years of grad school though... i played NCAA Football CONSTANTLY

I still fondly remember my dyansties: first with Toledo, then bouncing from Indiana to Notre Dame for a few seasons for no real reason, then starting programs at fake schools in Alaska and then Delaware... I think I ended it with a 6 season run at delaware that was epic...

Oy, I can relate
I played an NCAA FB dynasty or two, but what really  grabbed me was the College Hoops dynasties. I liked to work my way up to the top from Dartmouth to UNC. Problem is, all the good coaches never ever get fired and take forever to retire.

Damn recruiting, man. For whatever reason that just makes playing the games infinitely more engrossing.

This obsession, however, differs markedly from my roommate's obsession, which is playing the rushing attack mini-game for hours on end.

You can download the 2006 version for free
http://www.sportsmogul.com/store.html

If I were you, thats what I would do. Don't know how  extensive the demo is.

Thanks.
You saved me $20.  I still might pick up the newer edition.

I play MVP Baseball 2005 on PS2
in my opinion it's the best baseball game ever. I'm going to upgrade to one of the new releases this year, only because of Gordon and Butler. But I don't see any game being better than 05. I am 15 seasons deep, I have a feeling over the next couple of seasons I will be having a mini rebuilding situation just to open up a little more cap space.
Sign Alex Gordon to a life time contract!!!

doesn't everybody love a good BM?
I played Mogul version 2000 for some time.  Really enjoyed that style of GMing, I'll bet the game has more features now.

Recently I purchased OOTP Baseball (Out of the Park) , this is available online for $20 download.  I think it's a superior simulator - and it received better reviews online.  I enjoy focusing on minor league development more and this game allows the flexibility to choose how much time you want to devote (blow off) on the minors.

You probably can't go wrong with either @ $20, but I see more potential in OOTP.
