RR Royals #2 Prospect

#1 Mike Moustakas, 3B
#2 ???

Vote for who you believe is the Royals #2 prospect.

Short scouting reports:

Daniel Cortes | RHP | 21-years-old | 6-foot-6, 225 pounds
-Big workhorse body, fastball sits 93-96 and can peak higher. Already has plus curve. Changeup still lags a bit, as does command of fastball.

Daniel Duffy | LHP | 19-years-old | 6-foot-3, 185 pounds
-Four pitch lefty. Fastball 88-93, has been clocked higher in the past. Good curve, good change, both potential to be plus. Still needs to improve fastball command, but made huge strides this year thanks to improved mechanics.

Eric Hosmer | 1B | 18-years-old | 6-foot-4, 210 pounds
-Big raw power projection, perhaps biggest from this past draft. Trouble with inside pitch, not different from many young left-handed bats though. Great approach. Projects as plus defender at 1B (insert joke here).

Tim Melville | RHP | 18-years-old | 6-foot-5, 205 pounds
-Extremely projectable with present stuff. Already 91-94 with chance for plus curve and change. Scouts love his long term fastball projection, think he could throw very hard.

Carlos Rosa | RHP | 24-years-old | 6-foot-1, 185 pounds
-Smallish righty with great fastball. Ranges 92-95 with a little sink. Plus hard slider, his best pitch. Good change but inconsistent. Might be a bullpen guy long term. Nearly big league ready.

It came down to Cortes and Hosmer for me

…as well as that annoying thing called “upside.” Cortes’s ceiling is probably as a #2 SP, but Hosmer has legitimate MVP potential. So he gets the nod over Cortes’s impressive minor-league resume, but barely.

Hosmer has huge upside

I’ll go with him over Cortes. FWIW, I think BA will have him in the top 20, while the next best Royals prospect, Cortes, will likely be ranked somewhere in the 40-55 range.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

You think BA will have Hosmer higher or lower than Moustakas?

I think Moose was 14th in this year’s edition of BA, and despite his slow start in Burlington, I think his stock has probably risen because of how strong the second half of his season was.

by DarthYoshi on Oct 13, 2008 1:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

BA

They ranked Moose #18 in the winter top 100 list, and #23 in the midseason list.

With his insane second half, I could see him up in the top 15, maybe better.

I think Moustakas will be higher

I was thinking Moustakas in the 11-15 range and Hosmer 16-20, or something like that. Basically, scouts still love Moustakas’s tools and upside potential, and now he’s got a year of very good performance on top of the tools. So his stock has only gone up.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

yea, i'm voting hosmer as well.

I get the feeling this one and the next one won’t really be close in terms of votes.

doublestix, are you compiling the top 5 list?

…How far are you going in terms of prospect lists? I was considering beginning a top prospect list/discussion thread. Obviously, you – and likely others on this site – have more access and knowledge of prospect information than I do, but I consider myself mildly informed.

Here is my top 20 prospect list. Explanations and statistics will likely accompany the own fanpost. Hell, I’ll grade them here, as well, and give them rudimentary explanations. My grading scale is a bit friendlier than that of John Sickels.

1. Mike Moustakas (A) #3/4-hitter potential, All Star bat
2. Eric Hosmer (A) #3/4-hitter potential, All Star bat
3. Kila Kaaihue (A-) *He’s proven enough to me
4. Daniel Cortes (A-) *#2-starter potential, needs dominant third pitch to be #1-caliber
5. Daniel Duffy (B+) *Tom Glavine-lite, with a few more hits spread in
6. Carlos Rosa (B+) *He can already post extremely solid results as set-up man….probably a #3/#4 SP at best
7. Tim Melville (B+) *#3 potential
8. Daniel Gutierrez (B+) *Lights-out potential, injury history hurts him a bit
9. Mike Montgomery (B) *#3
10. Blake Wood (B) *not as big of a fan of this guy
11. Johnny Giavotella (B-) *GRIT!
12. Jason Taylor (B-) *I really like this guy…I don’t care what anyone says…4-tool potential, great OBP/speed/athleticism
13. Julio Cesar Pimentel (B-) *Fallen stock, B- because of lack of K-rate, GB% be damned
14. Jeff Bianchi (C+) *2B-value helps, big-time
15. Tyler Sample (C+) *Bobby Jenks? Or Runelvys Hernandez?
16. Joe Dickerson (C+) *Being a cornerman without much range/speed hurts his projection a bit
17. Derrick Robinson (C+) *Joey Gathright of today with a bit more doubles potential….not a fan, but sounds like a Moore guy
18. David Lough (C+) *Sleeper
19. Sam Runion (C+) *Disappointed tremendously this year
20. Chris Hayes (C+) *C’mon! Who can’t support this guy? Chad Bradford in the making!

Where would you put him?

I think the shine is off of Hardy after his awful 2008 start. While finishing with a (barely) sub-5.00 ERA and almost as many strikeouts as 2007 actually showed progress as the season wore on, his 2007-2008 is looking like the minor-league version of Banny’s 2007-2008. I assume he’ll pitch AA again this year. If he can look more like 2007 than 2008 now that he’s had time to adjust, I’ll feel better about his chances of eventually being able to contribute something at the MLB level.

Sometimes you just gotta roll the potato.

well, okay

I GUESS, given the not-quite-David Price beginning of 2008, I’ll put him at #2 as a concession. Just remember this when he wins 3 Cy Youngs in a row.

doublestix, can I get an amen?

I don’t know how Kila gets to #3. His tools are good, not great and his performance history includes one and only one good season. And he’s not exactly a spring chicken as prospects go. I’m not saying he’s a crappy prospect, but the Royals have a very, very good top 6 (at least). I don’t see how Kila cracks that top 6.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

A MLB or near MLB ready 24-year old

…With superb plate discipline, excellent contact, and excellent power at a power-premium position.

I’ll take that prospect any minute of the week.

there is some hardcore grade inflation here

Even if you account for being “friendlier” than the Sickels scale.

Kaaihue is definitely not an A- prospect. Cortes probably is not. The highest I see Kila being ranked is 8, behind (in this order) Moustakas, Hosmer, Cortes, Melville, Rosa (yes, I would rank Melville higher than Rosa), Duffy, and maybe Mike Montgomery. One lights-out year does not a top-5 prospect make.

by DarthYoshi on Oct 13, 2008 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

My grades are friendlier, as a rule

Every grade I give surrounding the Royals is friendlier. I grade on my own scale, which I admitted was slightly inflated. Could I adjust? Sure, but, as a fan, I would proceed to lose my soul.

I’m no scout, I have a difficult time believing Kila would immediately proceed to lackluster performance next year. Not after this type of ridiculous, off-the-chart offensive performance.

prospect lists

Here? Or on the blog?

Here it’ll probably go 15 unless people want to go farther. I myself will likely go 25 deep again with a couple honorable mention posts.

Pretty good list BTW. I can understand Kila at #3, don’t necessarily agree with it, but understand it.

I wanted to write a post asking RR readers for their top 20 (or 25) prospect list. I know you’ll be making your list for the blog; I’m anxious to read it.

Sometimes, you have to throw traditional scouting reports out and focus on in-game performance. Kila’s splits this year were spectacular. One year of that kind of raking is an enormous sample size. He convinced me in July.

I've noticed that we are valuing the bats over the pitchers when it comes to prospects.

Just a thought.

Is that because chicks dig the long ball or because strikeouts are facist?

Bats are a little easier to project, historically

Pitchers tend to have a little bit higher chance to flame out.

inflation

As we are in a financial crisis and pitching is the currency of baseball, their value has dropped.

by BrRoyal on Oct 13, 2008 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is a tougher pick because...

…it exposes one’s feelings about the development of minor league pitching. That’s a dicey guessing game. But I went with Cortes over Hosmer because Cortes has done something for a few years. I just can’t vote for a prospect who has not even one minor league year under his belt. – TL

Thoughts on 'potential'

I hear a lot of people say ‘so and so has #4 potential, or #3 or #2…" And I sort of get what they mean by it; they want to say that player x is not an obvious #1, like, say David Price. Clayton Kershaw. Tim Lincecum. I understand that, but I also think it’s kind of funny to say that pitchers project to such specific rotation slots. Greg Maddux certainly wouldn’t have projected to be an ace, nor Tom Glavine for that matter. Braves fans might have/probably said “Glavine’s a #3” when he was in single and double-A. Having said that, I think saying Danny Duffy, who just posted more ridiculous stats in high-A ball than I’ve seen in a long time—like 1.3 or 1.4 K’s per inning and less than one walk/hit per inning—projects as a #3 is, well, I don’t see that projection at all. No offense to whoever posted it. While I do understand single-A projections are kind of silly in and of themselves, the kid certainly has ace potential if we’re using that word. (I also understand that the MW league is a pitcher’s league, so I don’t want to go too crazy here, but if you’re really curious to see him in AA next year, raise your hand).
