RR Royals #5 Prospect

#1 Mike Moustakas, 3B
#2 Eric Hosmer, 1B
#3 Daniel Cortes, RHP
#4 Kila Ka'aihue, 1B
#5 ???

Going to go ahead and give it to the monster...

Voting for #5 starts......now.

Short scouting reports:

Daniel Duffy | LHP | 19-years-old | 6-foot-3, 185 pounds
-Four pitch lefty. Fastball 88-93, has been clocked higher in the past. Good curve, good change, both potential to be plus. Still needs to improve fastball command, but made huge strides this year thanks to improved mechanics.

Johnny Giavotella | 2B | 21-years-old | 5-foot-8, 185 pounds
-Small second baseman that can hit. Quick hands, good eye, lets ball travel deep into zone which gives him some power. Average defender. Does everything well, but nothing great -- similar to David DeJesus.

Mike Montgomery | LHP | 19-years-old | 6-foot-5, 180 pounds
-Long, athletic, projectable southpaw that scouts can dream on. Fastball currently 89-92, with very good changeup already, and a slow curveball. Also has a palmball. A couple improvements in mechanics will help his long term stock.

Tim Melville | RHP | 18-years-old | 6-foot-5, 205 pounds
-Extremely projectable with present stuff. Already 91-94 with chance for plus curve and change. Scouts love his long term fastball projection, think he could throw very hard.

Carlos Rosa | RHP | 24-years-old | 6-foot-1, 185 pounds
-Smallish righty with great fastball. Ranges 92-95 with a little sink. Plus hard slider, his best pitch. Good change but inconsistent. Might be a bullpen guy long term. Nearly big league ready.

I liked Duffy at #4 since he is a young LH starter

with two years of experience. This fact moves him ahead of Montgomery and Melville who don’t have the track record yet. I believe Duffy has a higher ceiling than Rosa. Position players are hard to compare but Giavotella’s talent isn’t as high potentially as Duffy.

I think we've got another 3-horse race

Rosa, Duffy, Melville. I have a strong feeling that Rosa and Duffy will be the top 2 vote getters for this one. Those who think prospect rankings should factor in how likely and/or how soon the player will be contributing in the majors should certainly vote for Rosa. He’s already been to the majors for a cup of coffee and should be back in 2009.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Did I ever tell y'all that Giovetella went to my high school?

Oh yeah!

Whoops, I guess I should’ve voted for him then.

My first thought was Rosa

but I’m a little worried about the injury history and it seems like he might end up a 2-pitch bullpen guy. I ended up voting for Melville, but it’s basically a draw in my mind between him and Duffy. You have to like Duffy’s K/9, but I haven’t seen him, and if the scouting report is that his control could use work, his 3 BB/9 this year doesn’t suggest otherwise.

Rosa actually has a good 4-pitch repertoire

Two plus pitches and two other decent pitches. His pitch complement is as good or better than any prospect in the Royals system. Quite frankly, Cortes is more of a 2-pitch pitcher than Rosa, and he’s the best pitching prospect in the system. Rosa’s third and fourth pitches are much better than Cortes’s.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I prefer to talk about a 3- 4- whatever pitch "mix"

sounds more like a bebop tune from the 50s that way

I rewatched Meche's last start today on DVR.

I love KC wins. I’ve got the last five games on TV saved on the DVR for the offseason.

i would not be surprised if we were saying that at this time next year

never bad to be ahead of the game…

i’m still giddy he fell to the third round last year. i took him in the second round of my shadow draft and was surprised he even made it that far.
