RR Royals #7 Prospect
#1 Mike Moustakas, 3B
#2 Eric Hosmer, 1B
#3 Daniel Cortes, RHP
#4 Kila Ka'aihue, 1B
#5 Daniel Duffy, LH
#6 Carlos Rosa, RHP
#7 ???
Rosa has a fair lead and wins the #6 poll.
Going to take Wood off, and put Giavotella back on. I'm going to add Derrick Robinson as well to the poll just to get a response. Make a suggestion for who should be on the next poll if you like.
Short scouting reports:
Johnny Giavotella | 2B | 21-years-old | 5-foot-8, 185 pounds
-Small second baseman that can hit. Quick hands, good eye, lets ball travel deep into zone which gives him some power. Average defender. Does everything well, but nothing great -- similar to David DeJesus.
Daniel Gutierrez | RHP | 21-years-old | 6-foot-1, 185 pounds
-Late round draft pick in '05 with electric arm. Fastball is in the low 90's and has been higher. Curveball is a plus pitch for him. Changeup self admittedly needs some work. Might have best mix of stuff and command in system.
Tim Melville | RHP | 18-years-old | 6-foot-5, 205 pounds
-Extremely projectable with present stuff. Already 91-94 with chance for plus curve and change. Scouts love his long term fastball projection, think he could throw very hard.
Mike Montgomery | LHP | 19-years-old | 6-foot-5, 180 pounds
-Long, athletic, projectable southpaw that scouts can dream on. Fastball currently 89-92, with very good changeup already, and a slow curveball. Also has a palmball. A couple improvements in mechanics will help his long term stock.
Derrick Robinson | CF | 20-years-old | 5-foot-11, 170 pounds
-Absolute burner with exciting top of the order hit tools. Still learning the game after football was his #1 sport in high school, and thus hasn't shown much in the way of results yet. Can play defense, has a good arm, and projects for gap power much like Kenny Lofton or Shane Victorino (away from that tiny ballpark in Philly).

I still think Huber should have been the 1B in 2006

Before much longer,
I would add Joe Dickerson to the poll. (Personally, I think he is a better prospect than Robinson)

I mostly agree
I think Dickerson is probably a slightly better prospect than Robinson, but I wouldn’t want to fall into the trap of “since [x] prospect is on the list, then [y] prospect must be on the list,” because after the next couple votes, I don’t think a ton is going to separate many of the remaining prospects.
That being said, I’d like to see Wood return (and it looks like he will), and then after that, I think Dickerson probably deserves to be added.

24 votes is a small sample size
I think this will probably be a landslide for Melville (and I’m soooo unbiased—I’ve been plugging Melville since the vote for #4 prospect), but I wouldn’t base that just yet off of the current sample. Florida circa 2000 this ain’t.
PS: What happens if my ballot has a dangling chad? Hmmmm…

51 votes in, looks like Melville in a landslide with 70% of the vote.

see what studying does to you?
If you worked at a Bennigans, you wouldn’t have to get up until like 10 every day.

If you study in the right classes, you don't have to get up early
I have one 8 am class this semester, but I otherwise don’t have to wake up until 9 every other day of the week.
And given Bennigan’s bankruptcy and liquidation of non-franchisee restaurants, I like my job prospects much more as a grad student than as an employee of Bennigan’s.

I'd put him at #3
We’d certainly be loaded at 1B if that happened.
He had very impressive numbers considering the context of the Carolina League.

My brother-in-law is the team doctor for a minor league hockey team
The orthopedist handles all of the hockey injuries, but my brother-in-law remains busy handling all of the “it burns when I . . .” problems.

wow... 8+ years of med school/residency to tell guys to wear a raincoat
actually, that sounds like my dad’s career as a general practioner, 10% perscription, 5% minor procedures, 85% telling people that smoking/eating fried food 3 times a day/drinking a case of beer a night isn’t a great idea.

To be fair
I get the sense most of these kids effectively quit school to play juniors before they took health class. The team doctor gig is only a few nights per week during the hockey season, so he spends most of his time doing what your dad did.

actually, most of my dad's career was in Oklahoma
but it was at a community health center that was funded by federal grants, so I suppose, in a way, it was socialized medicine
