Sickel's Analysis of Mike Aviles
Prior to this year Aviles' MLE were along the lines of .260/.310/.390. Let's hope he "saw the light" this year and does not regress too much. I am not sure if the production/defense combination of him and Callaspo will play...Furcal anyone?

Wow, predicting a .710 OPS for Aviles next year
With or without Sickels opinion, if the Royals can’t get someone like Dunn or Burrell for a reasonable, non-albatross contract, I think they should go after Furcal. There are still significant question marks surrounding both Aviles and Callaspo. So let Furcal play SS with Aviles at 2B and Callaspo as the primary utility IF/OF. If Aviles drops off next year like Sickels thinks he will, then give Callaspo a shot at full-time duty at 2B in the second half.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I like Aviles glove at third better then second, he needs to play on the left side of the infield.
Go Royals!

He's got decent range
And that decent shortstop range would look very good at 2B. To some extent, it would be wasted at third base, where you have much less ground to cover. And one of Aviles’s problems is his throws. And it would be much easier for him to make good, accurate throws from second than third. And his bat is much more valuable to the team at a middle IF spot than at a corner spot. Plus bats at SS and 2B are much more rare than on the corners. Let’s not move him to a position where his hitting would become merely average or below average.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Yeah, if Sickels is right, then he's no better than a German-esque utility IFer
Thankfully, I think he’s better than that.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Yeah, I like Sickels, but I don't get the .710.
I mean, an age 27 breakout doesn’t necessarily mean an age 27 peak, does it? Even with the BABIP stuff, I still think that’s towards the lower end of the possibilities next year. I wouldn’t be totally shocked if Avilanceh .710ed next year, but .700 seems like the lowest end of the range. I seem him more as a .725-.750 guy.

Having said that
If his defense is “only” exactly average, a .710 would be above average his year for an AL SS (.694, although that includes a lot of TPJ in the sample size), and .713 last year. Not bad for the league minimum.
I wonder how much Furcal is going to want.

Not a bad idea
I was reading MLBTraderumors I believe cite a writer that said Furcal will likely only get a one year deal offered to him. If we offered 2-3 years, he could be ours! Bwah-ha-ha-ha!

Mothers, lock up your daughters!
Seriously, they might get run down by the Royals 2008 infield.

I hope the market for him is that soft
Who knows, it may be. The biggest issue is his physical condition. If the medical reports look iffy, then there’s some real risk there. If not, I think he’s a good bet to be a productive signing.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

The Yankees would be smart to pull it off
Furcal at SS, Jeter at CF. get two birds stoned. Still have money for Teixeira.
Won’t happen of coure.

The Yankees won't move Jeter off of SS until he's 40 and even then there will be a hell of a controversey in the big apple
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Yeah
Am I crazy, though, or might he have a chance of being an OK CF? I always thought his main problem at SS was range side-to-side. I do think he’s a pretty smart player, his speed is pretty good, and he tracks flies pretty well.

I think he probably would be an ok CFer
You never know, since a lot of range is dependent on making good reads and taking the right routes, but I think he’d do fine in the OF. I think there would be a fairly steep learning curve (which we saw from Teahen in both RF last year and LF this year). He’d struggle early, make some bad reads and not look so good. But by the second half of the season, he’d probably be average or better. It’s a shame that other things often take precedence over smart baseball. He should have been moved to third base way back when Rodriguez was acquired. ARod was one of the best defensive SS’s in baseball and he had to move to 3B because nobody unseats “The Captain.” If it weren’t happening to the Yankees, it would be sad.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Normalizing Aviles BABIP
using the quick and dirty xBABIP method of LD% + .120 (and assuming all “lucky” hits were singles for SLG purposes) adjusts his line down to roughly a JJ Hardy-like 295/325/450.

Work ethic?
How much does his work ethic play into an improved 2009?
Don't forget to send your broken maples to the US Forest Service.
