The Gritster wins vote #9. DOUBLESTIX RIGGED THE VOTE!!!!!!!1!1one!!1!
Bianchi off for now, Derrick Robinson and Julio Pimentel on. Again these are just temporary to see how they do on the polls.
Short scouting reports:
Daniel Gutierrez | RHP | 21-years-old | 6-foot-1, 185 pounds
Acquired - 33rd Round, 2005 | '08 Level - Burlington (Low A)
Vitals - 4-4, 2.70 ERA, 90 IP, 104/25 K/BB, 1.78 FB/GB
-Late round draft pick in '05 with electric arm. Fastball is in the low 90's and has been higher. Curveball is a plus pitch for him. Changeup self admittedly needs some work. Might have best mix of stuff and command in system.
Julio Pimentel | RHP | 22-years-old | 6-foot-1, 190 pounds
Acquired - Trade w/ Dodgers in 2006 | '08 Level - NW Arkansas (AA)
Vitals - 7-13, 5.38 ERA, 157.1 IP, 115/52 K/BB, 1.26 FB/GB
-Hard throwing prospect acquired in 2006 from the Dodgers. Has three pitches, a 91-93 sinking fastball (slightly higher velocity in relief), a plus changeup, and a curveball. Still needs to work on command. Profiles better as a reliever in the mold of Fernando Rodney.
Derrick Robinson | CF | 20-years-old | 5-foot-11, 170 pounds
Acquired - 4th Round, 2006 | '08 Level - Wilmington (High A)
Vitals - .245/.316/.322, 97/51 K/BB, 62-for-79 SB
-Absolute burner with exciting top of the order hit tools. Still learning the game after football was his #1 sport in high school, and thus hasn't shown much in the way of results yet. Can play defense, has a good arm, and projects for gap power much like Kenny Lofton or Shane Victorino (away from that tiny ballpark in Philly).
Tyler Sample | RHP | 19-years-old | 6-foot-7, 240 pounds
Acquired - 3rd Round, 2008 | '08 Level - Arizona (R)
Vitals - 0-5, 9.00 ERA, 27 IP, 39/29 K/BB, 2.60 FB/GB
-Huge frame with big time fastball/curveball combination. Changeup is a work in progress, as is command of all his pitches. Sample has huge upside but is light years away from helping out the Royals.
Blake Wood | RHP | 23-years-old | 6-foot-5, 240 pounds
Acquired - 3rd Round, 2006 | '08 Level - Wilmington (High A)/NW Arkansas (AA)
Vitals - 8-9, 4.25 ERA, 144 IP, 139/47 K/BB, 1.07 FB/GB
-Big, workhorse type frame. Fastball in the low-90's that runs up to 95. Plus curveball with a noticeably improved changeup this year. Command still needs work, but showed flashes of brilliance at times this year.

Wood should have won #9 easily, IMO.
Hopefully he at least wins this one…

Guiterrez, baby!
have you done any study of the order in which they are listed and rate of success?

For me
It was a close battle between Blake Wood and Daniel Gutierrez. However, Wood experienced issues in AA last year and Gutierrez is injury-prone.
Therefore, I cast that lonely ‘other’ vote. I am really, really high on Jason Taylor. No pun intended! Oh, I didn’t just go there.

Taylor
I came oh so close to putting him on instead of Pimentel. He’ll definitely be on next poll.

wait
Where have you seen Gutierrez being injury prone? I think he’s only had physical injury once, and it wasn’t bad at all (though he did have mental “injuries!”)

Didn't he miss extensive time in '08?
What was his injury, because I don’t remember?

I don't remember the injury, exactly
I’ll try and find it. He was out for a bit over a month. Sounds bad, might have been, but you know they are very cautious with young pitchers especially the promising ones.

I was just worried...
…because of his relatively small build for a pitcher. 6’1" 180.

That's fair...
I’ll try looking through the Bees news archive later, it should have the details of the injury there somewhere.

I voted for D-Rob
because somehow, even though I know nothing about him, doubestix pimping of him has me totally convinced he’s going to be the Royals version of B. J. Upton
OMG Banny. FWIW I am only crdtng u w/3 runs allwd bc of DDJ OMFG

And he’ll be in my top 10.
Only in our dreams will he be Upton though.

am I picking the right unpolished, toolsy outfielder?
I’m too lazy to remember the other one…
Not Orlando, as we’ve discussed, with him
downside: Carlos Beltran
upside: Rich Man’s Willie Mays

i think so
Robinson:
Downside – Rickie Henderson
Upside – Rickie Henderson with A-Rod’s power.
So yea.

the upside/downside thing was Orlando, of course
Joe Dickerson… that’s the name I was looking for… I guess he’s a tweener. I thought he was a faster guy…

They're never going to believe us
I seriously think I would pee my pants if Rowdy ever gets into a meaningless game in September. I might find an excuse to fly down if a bunch of us showed up early, drunk, and got his autograph, pictures taken, and screamed for him all game long.

Didn't Sickels put a catcher in his top 20?
I found that odd, especially since it wasn’t McCauley.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

He had Jose Bonilla at 17
The kid out of the Dominican had a great year for the ASL Royals—.357/.405(well, he is a Royals’ prospect)/.625/1.030, 9 2B, 3 3B, 5 HR. Struck out quite a bit more than he walked, but that would just make him John Buck with a lot more hits. Salvador Perez, who played at both Burlington NC and Idaho Falls also looks quite good. It’ll be awhile before we get a whiff of them in KC, but they both seem to be legit prospects.

Blake Wood
Bigger Frame and at a higher level…Lets see how Gutierrez handles A+ ball before moving him up the list too fast. He was 21 at A ball.
