He failed to factor in grit though. Is Jacobs gritty? He is white. He has played for a contender. He is a former catcher. The signs of grit are there.

If Hoagie Can

Manage .270/.300/.500 we would actually have some pop in the middle of the lineup.
Against RHP:
DDJ CF
Callaspo 2B
A-Gor 3B
Hoagie LF
Jacobs DH
Butler 1B
Teahen RF
Aviles SS
Buck C

Against LHP:
DDJ CF
Aviles SS
Butler DH
Hoagie LF
Shealy 1B
A-Gor 3B
Buck C
Teahen RF
Callaspo 2B

This also gives us some real pop off the bench with Jason Smith safely stowed in Omaha. It sounds like GMDM is not done dealing, so we might be looking at an entirely different picture by March, but what we have now looks a little better anyway.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

I approve this lineups (and we all know that phil needs my approval)

’cept against RHP I would still have Callaspo ninth, BUck 8th, and either Aviles or Butler second.

I Feel Much

Better. However, Aviles has not hit RHP’s very well, and Callaspo bats both ways. I just cannot see Butler battind 2nd.Call me old fashioned, but I like that versatility in the 2 hole. Yes, she said that.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

What we really need is some nice pop off the bench

I wonder who in the organization could give us that?

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

It could also possibly give us

Two of the biggest out machines in baseball. Only four players in the AL had a worse OBA than Guillen and Jacobs last year – Kenji Johjima, Carlos Gomez, Bobby Crosby and our old friend Emil Brown.

Assuming Butler and/or Shealy is gone

if Aviles or Callapso were to go down with an injury during the season, we could see a regular lineup featuring OBP machines Jacobs, Guillen, Gload, and TPJ

Virgin voyage:

Feel like I know you guys (and gals) already. Been following this blog since May when I finally joined the cyber world at home. It took me six months to find my own email account so I could affirm my application……….what can I say, I’m technologically challenged (the TPJr of computer use.)

Enjoy the banter and the (often times) salient, intelligent commentary on the Royals. I’m not sure I belong in this group of sabermetric gurus. I’ve learned some of the vocabulary by following along these past few months but my knowledge and opinions regarding baseball are mostly experiential and instinctual. Not sure that adds much to this mix but what the hell…..

Here goes…..I like the Jacobs trade because of what it says about Moore. He is ready to make some moves. 1st base/DH would have been about the last place one would figure he would look to throw another body at considering the obvious problems elsewhere (LF, C, RF, 2nd, and to a lesser degree CF, SS, and #4 and #5 SP.) But he did it anyway and he did it as soon as he could after the Series. If he was dissatisfied with the prospect of Butler/Shealy/Gload/Kila at 1st in ST(a well-founded dissatisfaction indeed) I’m beginning to get a feel for how dissatisfied he is with all the other issues, positions, and players on this roster.

I feel almost certain that he will attempt to address these other more pressing needs now——and I was not certain until the Jacobs trade this week. A small, somewhat questionable, and quirky step but, a step and a statement. It’s about time.

Welcome to RR

And I will initiate you by disagreeing with you (that’s the best welcome I can give).

I like the Jacobs trade because of what it says about Moore. He is ready to make some moves.

To some extent, I agree with the sentiment. The team isn’t ready to contend and isn’t really very close. So the GM needs to make some moves. But the problem is that you can’t just make moves. You have to make the right moves to improve the team. While Jacobs is an upgrade over Gload, this was a poor selection of a regular first baseman. And if he was just acquired to be a DH-only and/or platoon player, his quality of production for those roles could have been had for 1/3 of the money on the FA market, without giving up any talent.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Nov 1, 2008 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

BTW, Steve...

Don’t let people disagreeing with you (including me) or your lack of sabermetric knowledge keep you from posting. We all know something about baseball and about the Royals. Some know more about stats, statistical analysis, tools, scouting, prospects or the business of baseball more than others. But we’re all just fans. All of our opinions count. And we should all expect others to disagree with us from time to time often.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

A reference to that Hovley, but not the real deal......just liked the idea of a bookish Stanford grad on the Royals

I’m honored, both Retro and NY respond to my initial post……but I guess I’m not truly one of ‘the good ol’ boys’ till devil fingers cuts me to the quick…..

I know the move is questionable, even a bit wrong-headed but it didn’t cost us much and may have achieved more for the aforementioned reason (messaging the players, the organization, the manager.) I know the problem with regards to true ability—-we now have 3 DH’s, Jose/billy/jacobs——none of the three deserve a defensive position in the Majors.

I can handle the disagreement—-even disparagement, I’m a teacher by trade.

Trust—belief: I’d obviously like both…..but I think the real issue is Moore proving himself to be the ‘savior’ (no more religious allusion than necessary) of the franchise with regards to position players, action, and leading the Glasses(?) through this process of building a franchise so sorely misguided and mismanaged for so many years. It’s about time we see what he’s made of———-fish or cut bait, you can sit on Allard’s choices and F*
ups or you can put your stamp on this franchise and do something bold (by my moniker, you know that I was a fan during the Cedric Tallis years, I expect no less from this schmo, especially since he came in talking about riding through the Plaza in a World Series parade.)

NYRoyal, when I’m pegged by newbies as the resident d-ckhead, you’ve definitely been slacking

Just in case you haven’t noticed it, you are well your way to transforming yourself into a self-superior, elitist, stathead (like me!). You used to provide mood-lightening levity. Now you crush the opinions of others with the vorpal sword of your advanced sabermetric knowledge. Soon people will complain that your mere presence stifles discussion. The good ’ol devil_fingers of yore, the hail fellow well met, is quickly being replaced by a carnivorous, blood thirsty, sabermetric beast, fangs dripping with third order statistics and regression analysis. Welcome to the dark side. May God have mercy on your soul.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I assumed my double entendre was obvious ;)

And in the other meaning wasn’t so much D&D as the origin of “vorpal blade” from Jabberwocky. I was likening our endless recitation of stats and metrics to Lewis Carroll’s epic of nonsense.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Reread the posts this a.m.and

realized that perhaps I’ve been eating too much red meat.

Action just for the sake of action is not the answer,on that issue you are certainly right. The moves must make sense in the context of where we are now and where we need to be if this is all to come together.

After a summer of witnessing ineptitude and futility (Gload, Gathright, Pena, Gobble, Guillen) I am, quite probably, just anxious for something new to happen that gives me a sense that DM sees what seems painfully obvious: we’re a long way off, and sitting on your hands and waiting for the supposed ‘greatness’ of Butler and Gordon to shine through is insanity.

DM has helped build a respectable pitching staff but the position player issues remain and even negates some of the progress on the mound. I’m venting to the choir…………….

by Steve Hovley on Nov 2, 2008 8:40 AM EST reply actions

Welcome!

Fear not. Some of us are illiterate to advanced metrics. Though it’s nice that the new metrics seem to have average at 0 or 100 so that when they are posted here I can follow somewhat.

by BrRoyal on Nov 2, 2008 10:37 AM EST up reply actions

quick reality check

Steve never said he doesn’t understand “advanced metrics.” Most of the stats we use here really aren’t particularly “advanced” anyway. The value stats all essentially just sum up values of singles, doubles, triples, home runs, and walks, and the expectation stats are more or less just multiplying expected probabilities by the number of chances.
