Quirk and Cockrell to KC?

We all know that hitting coaches and other assistant coaches can potentially add 10-15 wins a year to a team. Jamie Quirk, a former Royal and wingman to crab aficianado George Brett, has helped lead a team to the World Series as a bench coach with the Rockies. Alan Cockrell, a KCK native, helped the Rox lead the league in OBA in 2007 as hitting instructor.

Could we see one or both of these men hired in Kansas City to replace Mike Barnett and Luis Silverio? If hired, should we already begin printing "Royals: 2009 AL Central Division Champion" t-shirts?

10-15 is conservative

coupled with a strong manager, a coaching staff is worth 30 wins per season

who knows

as long as Royals fans are ready for the almost inevitable firing of any coach that is hired, and the subsequent tension between the “legend” and the team.

Do you think Tigers fans are happy with how the Alan Trammell thing turned out? I dunno, maybe he’s a jerk, but there’s a guy who can’t catch a break…

Legend?

I know Jamie Quirk is the 79th Greatest Royal of All-Time, but calling him a “legend” is a bit of a stretch.

Is that what they're calling Ireland now?

Seriously, though, I thought you were in Ireland…

I just want to make up after the Endy Chavez mix up.

I'm going to Dublin next week

Just taking a small break from obsessive posting this week.

BTW, I wasn’t attempting to zing you about the Endy Chavez thing. I was actually just mocking some of the often contradictory, usually unsupported “GMDM only acquires former Braves/born again Christians/pitchers/fast/defensive specialists” cliches. I was augmenting your Endy Chavez sarcasm.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I can't wait to have Endy on this team

Obviously

If a coach can manage to get a Rockies team to hit well, he must be an unbelievable coach (See: resumes of former High Desert batting instructors).

I hear Quirk is going to follow Chad Johnson's lead

…and have his name officially changed to Jamie Plate Discipline. Hire.him.now. As long as he mentions “plate discipline” or drawing walks five times in every interview, and never says the dreaded A-word, he’ll be the best hitting coach in Royals history, perhaps in baseball history.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Oct 8, 2008 12:19 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Actually NY

It would be….

Jamie Plato Disciplina

according to my exhaustive 35 second search on google…

by GoBabies!! on Oct 8, 2008 8:49 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

how about if he says "Aggressive plate discipline"?

Or "disciplined aggressiveness?"

that’s a bit leather, I suppose

If he says that, off with his head!

“Aggressive” is forbidden, regardless of context. It’s like the N-word; it is never acceptable, regardless of the words put around it. “Aggressive” is the third rail of the Royals Review vocabulary.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

did the Charlie Lau approach lead to high on-base percentage?

or was it that we had good hitters in the line-up back then?

I think Charlie Lau was one of the few real hitting gurus

He could actually help a player hit better. But even back then I think most of the Royals hitting was because the Royals had some good hitters.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

why was silverio fired?

I wanna know what love is, I want you to show me

by LeoBloom on Oct 8, 2008 2:14 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

no public reason given

He will undoubtedly remain in the organization. I read a story somewhere (maybe here?) that Ewing Kauffman helped Silverio out when he was a kid or something, so Luis is like indebted to the organization for life. He could be a roving coordinator or an instructor in the Dominican or something.

I Like Silverio

For no reason. When he was coaching 1B, I remember thinking “Bring on the shirtless hillbillies now, Sawks!” He looked like he could take them.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

Halloween approaches

…so maybe Jamie can show up to his press conference in a Bob Boone mask, since JQ was a strict Boonie disciple. What better way to scare all the babies in the clubhouse?

Quirk

When I first saw that Quirk was available, I immediately penciled him in for a return trip to KC. If Brett still has any pull, that is. At the very least I can see him as a roving instructor-type.
