RIP Bruce Dal Canton
I've read on a couple other message boards that Bruce Dal Canton (Royals 1971-75) passed away on October 7. This has been a terrible year for Royals alumni. We've never lost more than 2 ex-Royals in a single year. This marks the 5th death of 2008 (Lance Clemons, Steve Mingori, Bill Sorrell, Todd Cruz are the others).
Hopefully this will be the last one of 2008. RIP Mr. Dal Canton.

Very sad news
The 100 Greatest Royals of All-Time: #75 Bruce Dal Canton
By all accounts he seemed like a really nice, quiet guy – a teacher who got a chance with the Pirates when it seemed as if a MLB career had already passed him by. He was a valuable swingman for the Royals, and has continued his teaching career as a pitching coach in the minors.
RIP Bruce.

Royals Alumni deaths
First of all, condolences to the family.
Second, for a site that likes to spout stats, you sure didn’t look very far into this one.
Royals first year 1969 – next year is their 40th anniversary
Assuming all players were at least 21 when they played, we are coming up on former Royals getting old. If they played for the team in ‘69 they are a minimum of 60. If they were older veterans on those early teams, they could be in their mid-70’s. Plus, life expectancy is what 72-75? It’s just natural. Granted, it is unusual to go from 1 to 5, but with ages getting higher, it’s something you are going to see more often unfortunately.
I'm quite aware of that
That’s certainly an undeniable fact and one that I’m quite aware of. Not sure that anybody stated that it was a statistical improbability, if anything it’s probably been remarkable that the Royals alumni have been blessed with good health for the most part. Still, before this year, we’d only lost 20 alumni in our history so 5 this year alone is a huge jump (and after only 8 deaths from 2000-2007). I guess this year is just making up for a good year in 2007.

I wonder if we'll be adding
Ambiorix Burgos to the list soon. His life seems to be getting a bit out of control.

Are only players "Alumni"?
How many ex-managers of the Royals are no longer with us? Only Joe Gordon, Bob Lemon and of course Dick Howser, I think.

Managers, coaches, etc
Managers no longer with us:
Joe Gordon (Manager 1969), Bob Lemon (1970-72), & Dick Howser (1981-87).
Coaches no longer with us:
Dan Carnevale (coached in 1970), Pat Dobson (1991), Owen Friend (1969), Mel Harder (1969), Chuck Hiller (1976-79), Charley Lau (1971-78), Bob Lemon (1970), Gene Mauch (1995), Joe Schultz (1970), & Jo Jo White (1969).
Broadcasters
I think the only broadcaster we’ve lost is Gene Osborn. He did Royals TV in 1975 and died in November of 1975 (kidney disorder).
Where is Al Wisk now?
Bud Blattner is still alive?

Wisk & Blattner
As of 2006, Al Wisk was living in Dallas, TX. His wife died of an apparent stroke that year ( http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/obituaries/stories/DN-wiskob_08met.ART.North.Edition1.3f410a9.html ).
Mr. Blattner is presently living in Chesterfield, MO.

I’m glad you came back here; I was hoping to get in touch with you but couldn’t find an e-mail link on your Royals history web site.
On your web site you have a picture of Duane Dewey, who was on the Royals roster for a while but never played. It seems to have been cropped from a Royals team photo – but where in the world is that from?? I have the Grand Slam magazines and yearbooks from 1982 and 1983, and I don’t see his name listed under any of the team photos in those publications.

I'm pretty sure it's in the 1981 Grand Slam First edition
If I can figure out where I put mine I’ll scan the whole photo. You wouldn’t happen to have an extra 1995, 1998, or 2001 yearbook? I’ve been concentrating on finding Spring Training programs, post season media guides, and game programs but still need to locate those to complete my yearbook/Grand Slam/Photo Album collection.
I have the 1981 editions as well
I’ll have to check those out, didn’t expect he’d be earlier than 1982. It was driving me nuts!
I’ll check my spare yearbooks, but I don’t think off-hand I have spares of those years. The 1998 one was tough for me to track down!

Yup, good memory
1981 has him.
Sorry, but I indeed don’t have spares of those years’ yearbooks. These things turn up on eBay with reasonable frequency.

A better photo of Dewey...
Ah, George Brace
There are a few Royals who never had a genuine baseball card whose picture I have thanks to him.
