The Office- Season 5 Episode 2 Open Thread
Following Ryan's recent scandal at corporate, Holly must hold a business ethics seminar.
- So is the guy from Mad Men gone forever now? I was really hoping the "Pam at Art School" storyline was going to develop into something interesting. As of the first episode however, all we got was two minutes of Mr. Perfect feeling annoyed, which lead to him proposing (OMG !!! they were soooo adorable!!!!). So... is she coming back to Dunder Mifflin? Will she pursue some kind of art/graphic design career? Does she still think she's good? Perhaps its just my own similarities to Pam coming out, but I feel like Pam's aspirations and frustrations are the secret core of the show, especially since Jim is now "here to stay" at DM.
- Will we find out what was up with Meredith's face in the first third of last episode? Seriously, what the hell was that? I really didn't like the format of the first episode, but there is a possibility that they were spoofing/playing with the silliness of dockumentaries. Was Meredith's unexplained state just a mini-joke on the inability of a film-crew to actually explain things?
- So Dwight and Angela are having sex in the warehouse (how big is this office complex?)... and... yea. So is that going anywhere?
- Holly's name is apparently "Hollis".

The Mad Men guy
Is appearing in four episodes from what I heard, so I imagine we’ll see a bit more of him.

When you are the first couple chapters of Great Expectations, did you get frustrated because it looked like everything was going to turn out all right for Pip?

Also, I’m pretty sure that Pam’s going to be back from Art School already. That storylines is done.
Maybe we need a “small sample size” post on TV watching.

what was depressing about office olympics?
Jim organized something that everyone in the office loved.
Part of my problem with Jim goes back to a central problem: a lack of “everyman” male characters. Tim from the BBC version was basically an average Joe with a somewhat sharp sense of humor. Dawn thought he was funny, no one else in the office seemed to notice. That was it. (Well, there were like two episodes when he was with that other girl. Still no comparison to Jim’s haul of Karen & Purse Girl.) With Jim, it’s a much more total dynamic of adoration from everyone. Beyond Jim, the primary male characters are hilarious but basically insane, unrealistic characters: Michael, Dwight, Andy.
Some combo of Oscar/Kevin/Darryl is needed more. Maybe we’ll see some more Oscar this season.

I dunno. Maybe I see the series differently than you do. I’m referring to Jim’s interactions with Katie (Katy?) and why it turned out the way it did.
You are right that Jim is admired, but not quite as universally as you think. The cracks in his armor are definitely there, and are clearly going to come out. Cf. my reference to Pip. You can’t expect it to come all the time. I’d definitely say we’ll see him jealous, possessive, and frustrated. Stuff we didn’t see from Tim.
But, if they make him less likable, will you like him more? It’s a weird dynamic — I can’t tell whether you dislike Jim, or just the fact that they’ve made him too likable. Hey, I’m not telling you how to feel.
Part of the problem is that the viewers have a hard time distinguishing between Jim as the “observers viewpoint” and Jim as a cog in the show. The British version was more clear about that. In general, then, the American show has trouble with blurring the line between the “everyman” characters and the “crazy” ones, although part of the show’s brilliance is showing that each group is more alike than at first glance (most obvious with Jim/Michael, of course, but also see Ryan’s transformation, Ryan/Toby, perhaps Pam/Kelly, and so on)
Part of the problem, of course, is that the show has no definite endpoint as did the British version. Part of the advantage of the British show is that any more Ricky Gervais would have killed it (he’s great in small doses. Funny as hell, but not as talented or versatile a performer as Carrell.)

I do think they've made Jim too good, too nice, too sweet
I too liked his homologous character on the original BBC version. Not quite so well liked by everyone. Not nearly so successful. On the NBC version, he makes more big sales and gets more compliments from corporate. They’ve made him into something of a Golden Boy. While the rest of the cast and show has an edge, they have left Jim and Pam and their magical romance essentially edge-free. I think the writers/producers of the show are trying to maintain as large of a fanbase as possible by making it unconventional enough for one demographic to like it, while sweet and heartwarming enough for another demographic to like it too.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

overeaction based on small sample size!!!1111
Pam/Jim are clearly headed for something not good. And the Jim/Roy parallel is so obvious… although not obvious enough, since they practically put the words in Jim’s mouth in the first episode of the season.
I agree that it’s going to be extremely difficult to make the relationship not annoying as hell, even if they do break up, or whatever, since that’s the letimotif of every freaking unrequited love story on TV. I still think they could have pulled a real switcheroo by having them just get together without a hitch, then moving the relationship off center stage to focus on other people and stuff in the office. God forbid male-female relationships not be the only topic addressed on sitcoms.
I do think that the main problem is that the show is still on. Aesthetically, they would have been best off ending the show after the third season, or even after last season, but the money will flow.
Dammit, this aesthetic crime is going on and people are STILL talking about Pacman Jones?
Oh, the humanity.

Pam/Jim are clearly headed for something not good.
I don’t know about that. I’m sure there will be speed bumps. There might even be a “the engagement is off!” moment which lasts for a couple of episodes. But I think they are dead set on keeping America’s sweethearts together for the long run. I think they want to maintain an appeal to hipsters who like alternative comedy, and also middle American housewives who just want to see these two great kids make it work. In addition to the other more interesting and funny story lines, one of the themes of this season will be “love conquers all.” I just threw up in my mouth a little.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Typical high school romance
They had nothing in common other than they both had fun hanging out in high school and they stayed together simply because it was easier than breaking up. I’ve known lots of couples like this.

i think it depends on the school
some Comm departments are basically english, but with people also talking more about TV/Film, etc.

that makes it either redundant or cretinous
There are the “rhetoric” people, who are better off in English/Com Lit departments.
Then there are people like the brother of a friend of mine, who writes on the development of telecommunications in India…
Communications is like Cultural Studies — um, if you study “Culture,” what is everyone in the humanities doing?

Meredith's face
My wife and I talked about that. In the early summer segments of the show, her face looked pretty badly burned, but they said nothing about it in the episode. When I saw that, I assumed that something had happened to the actress but there were just going to move on in the show as if nothing happened. But then in the later summer segments, her face was unburned and unmarked. My guess is that in the original script for the episode there was a small segment where Meredith relates some bad beach experience where she got a mega-sunburn. But in the end, it didn’t fit the time constraints of the show, so it got cut. So you’ve got some scenes early on where she has a bad burn but no explanation.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I think Holly will turn out different from Toby
She seems much less laid back than Toby and more concerned with following the letter of all the rules…while Toby would occasionally intervene with some of Michael’s more outrageous stunts, he stepped back a lot of times and let Michael hang himself.

And completely far-fetched too. I would have rather he came back in cameos by having Kelly take him back and he, being a low point, was desperate to be with her.
But would a company hire back a guy who was arrested for fraud in their company? Uhhh, no.
