The Office Season 5 Epsiode 7 Open Thread
Are those numbers right? I've lost all count.
Business Trip. Michael brings Andy and Oscar on a business trip to Canada, while Jim counts down the days until Pam gets back from art school.
Hey, remember when Pam's art school was a non-sensical three months and exclusively over the summer? So do I. Now were on what, the fourth episode of having to feel sorry for Mr. Perfect about it.
It must be tough for Jim those months when he's not promoted or offered a job at corporate or able to wrap with the CEO about how awesome he is. And look, after joylessly running through purse girl and Karen, he's been seperated from Pammie.
It is so easy to identify with this everyman.

Michael brings Andy and Oscar on a business trip to Canada
The Office generally does very well when characters who typically do not interact share scenes together. Hopefully, Oscar’s mean streak, which can be funny as hell, makes an appearance.
This show seems to be causing you way too much distress
I hope an anvil falls on Jim’s head.

Will there be a Tim Hortons or Boston Pizza product placement?
I bet Michael

Glad to see Oscar get more screentime, he is consistently one of my favorite characters. Andy usually annoys the hell out of me, but I actually liked him in this episode, especially in the bar and subsequent airport scenes.
“What’s first base for Angela?”
“I get to kiss her on the forehead.”
Andy annoys you?
I personally think his scenes are often the funniest on the show, especially anything musical/Cornell related

I just see Andy as this idiot frat boy
All the other characters on the show, even Kevin, are possessing of at least some degree of cleverness and intellect. Andy is loud and dumb, which for me is usually more annoying than it is funny.
That being said, I’ve liked him much more in the last couple episodes, with the Canada and Dwight-applying-to-Cornell subplots.
Wow, they resolved the Pam-in-New York tension in the most Disney way possible
So the show built up big possible tension about Pam perhaps staying in New York for more school or to pursue an art career. And instead of dealing with it, they had a very simple “love conquers all” moment. Diabetics in the audience, please give yourself another injection of insulin.
Perhaps this issue will come back up again and create a problem for America’s Sweethearts© but they are really sticking to this syrupy sweet perfect love relationship story line. It continues to be the only major weakness in a great show. Will the writers overcome or take the path of least resistance?
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I can't believe this is going anywhere "happy"
am I the only one who sees this as an obvious beginning of the way down? Do I have too much faith in the writers to think they can handle position players, too? Wait, what were we talking about?

setting up michael getting fired
which will be the definitive tragedy or statement of the series
++
The Pam/Art School thread was always non-sensical, did we even know what she was even doing? A three month certification in something? In a way, I guess its realistic, you can’t just snap your fingers and become an “artist” and taking a class and moving to NY is really, still, just snapping your fingers. Its crushingly sad, but of course, she’s doing it all for love, so…
Recall my prediction that this very thing would happen
(even though it wasn’t a very stunning prediction) — Pam’s return despite Jim telling her to stick it out.

I guess the hallowed BBC version
established a precedent that the star-crossed lovers have to find happiness
Aesthetically, Pam’s failure in art school was a brave choice and one of integrity. But then we get the sunset scene (how many of those have there been the last two seasons?) with Jim where she seemed a little too comfortable with it all. Maybe its just Fishcer’s weakness as an actress or something. I dunno… I find Pam’s behavior as Jim’s happy little cheerleader not really endearing.
I understand that
but don’t you think it’s headed for a breakdown at the end of the season? They absolutely have to break up. They don’t have to go with the smarmy Jim getting left at the altar (although that would be true to Pam’s form — play the martyr until the last minute, then fuck everyone else over), just a sad/bitter farewell and tension.

It doesn't have to go that way
It could, but that hasn’t been the way they’ve been playing it. From the beginning, they’ve played the relationship as two soulmates, destined to be together, who have to overcome obstacles to get together and stay together. There will certainly be more obstacles, but I don’t think they will let this particularly story line end in tragedy. I still say that the producers of the show want as big and broad of an audience as possible. So they are trying to balance somewhat edgier, alternative comedy with a sweet, mass appeal love story. I think that they have decided to have their cake and eat it too, and then laugh/cry all the way to the bank (if I may liberally mix metaphors).
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

that's shortsighted
it’s the Mike Jacobs trade of sitcom writing. Yeah, there’s a short-term payoff, but the long-term opportunity cost reveals a deviation from a successful plan that will hurt the franchise. In the case of the Royals, it isn’t fatal. For the Office, it will be.

Solid episode
minus the two Jim/Pam scenes. Oscar and Andy paid off great. Daryl walking to his car was a great shot. Could have used more Winnipeg.
30 Rock was genius with the Night Court bit. The Jennifer Anniston story line should not have worked, but the writing and acting pulled it off impressively.
+1
On the Night Court 30 Rock episode, although they got my hopes up for a “Night Court: The Movie” starring Tracy Jordan as “Mac”.

Oh yeah
I loved “Dan” in the original Night Court, but seeing Lohn Larroquette on other stuff lately has made me wonder if he was always so insufferable. It’s like he’s trying to be as smarmy as Phil Hartman, but is so self-congratulatory that he just comes off as a tool.

And what is with JL not being on the 40 Rock "Night Court reunion"?
Does he think he’s too good to be associated with his old role (and only claim to fame) because he gets the occasional guest spot on other TV series? I think a lot of Dan Fielding’s jerkness came naturally to JL.

And when he was on "Chuck"
(I know, I’m a dork for liking that show — they’re hotshotting every good angle worse than WCW in 1998) he could have been perfect, but he overdid it.
I guess my Phil Hartman standard is just too high for that type.
For some reason we don’t watch 30 ROck. Not sure why. I’ve liked it the couple times I’ve seen it — Alec Baldwin is finally being good at something (He’s what John Larroquette could have been, you know, if he didn’t suck).

My wife absolutely loves “Chuck” so I watch it. I think it is ok. Kind of funny and inoffensive. It rarely annoys me. And the blonde is breathtakingly beautiful.
And 30 Rock might be my favorite show in TV right now. If you like the Simpsons and Arrested Development, then you’ll like 30 Rock. I’m not saying it is as good as those shows, but they have a similar kind of comedy. Very funny, very smart, rapid fire dialog which is dense with funny references and little throw away lines which are often even better than the punchline. Great stuff. I just got the Season 1, Disc 1 from Netflix. The shows are so well written and so dense that in watching the episodes again, you pick up stuff you missed earlier.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I think “Sunny in Philadelphia” is the funniest show on TV (although this season has been a bit of a letdown), 30 Rock is a close second.

When they took on controversial issues. I never thought an episode about abortion of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict would be funny, but they are probably the most hilarious episodes of the series.

Blech
I guess I’m in the minority but I thought that was the worst episode they’ve had in quite awhile. The Jim/Pam storyline was stupid and saccharine. Michael wasn’t all that funny, just sad. There was very little Dwight, and he drives much of the comedy on the show. Ryan and Kelly are probably the two most annoying characters on the show.
The only redeeming part was the Oscar/Andy storyline, which was really good – I like seeing more depth to the backup players.
Couple minor things….why did Oscar have to go on the trip? Do you really need someone from accounting? For that matter, why do they need Andy or Meredith? Seemed like Michael could have handled it on his own. And did Meredith make it to Winnipeg? They didn’t even show her there. I thought she’d have some scene-stealing moments.
Seems like they’re setting up:
(1) Michael and David Wallace having it out in a confrontation that has Michael hilariously making himself a martyr for love, only to find out that Holly has already moved on, forcing him to beg for his old job back.
(2) Ryan dumping Kelly again
(3) Jim telling Pam to go back to New York (my wife was rolling her eyes and how Pam “couldn’t do twelve more weeks”. Her and I lived 1500 miles apart for a year)
(4) Andy is about to discover Angela has been letting Dwight go way past kissing her forehead
Hope they step it up, its not like the writers have blogs about dunderhead baseball analysts distracting them anymore.
Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com
actually sort of agree
My wife an I got engaged when I was living in Kansas and she was in Paraguay for a year. But at least your wife gets at how pathetic Pam is. Which is the point of the show (everyone’s pathetic in that sense).
Oscar probably went to that Michael wouldn’t make any insane deals — it makes sense, from David Wallace’s perspective. Although Michael is clearly actually good at sales.
I don’t think Meredith went at all, it was confusing.
Remember, though, TV shows, like baseball players, age much more quickly than we expect. The Office at least in its age 30 year right now — everyone thinks that’s the prime, when it’s actually probably a year or two into the decline.

Jim and Pam have a perfect love. The love that you two have for your significant others is just regular ol’ normal love. When two soulmates find each other, they can’t bear to be apart. Their perfect love is conquering and will continue to conquer all.

“Frame Toby” – A mysterious person in the office has made a huge mess in the microwave and will not clean it up. Meanwhile, Michael has to come to terms with the fact that there have been certain personnel changes in his staff without his knowing.

Long-term story line I'd love to see but will never happen

Of course, that would ruin the Toby "character"
since the whole point of him is that he never has the stones to actually do something like that
and he’s probably better off anyway, since if Pam married Toby, she’d would have a threesome with two guys she’s never met before the second night of their honeymoon.

But characters can change and grow
You don’t want too much of that in a long running TV show, but it can happen. But they could do it and have the marriage blow up, which would be both expected and realistic. But it would be worth it because Toby will always have that moment that he bested Jim and got the girl. The fact that she ends up cheating on him and leaving him, well that’s just epilogue. It would be nice for ol’ Gil to get a big win once, even if it must eventually turn into a loss.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
