New Roster (Including future trades)
Being that we made the Coco Crisp trade, I still see us making another trade, probably involving DDJ or Teahen. I still like the idea of getting Fontenot and Pie from the Cubs for either one of those guys. I know not a lot of people like this for DDJ but Fontenot could start right away at 2B (900 OPS last year) putting Callaspo as utility again. This would also put Pie as 4th OF (good spot for him being that we are would be waiting for him to get better and realize his talent). These two moves get rid of TPJ and Gathright.
New Bench: Buck, Shealy, Callaspo, and Pie. (no TPJ, Gload, German, Gathright)
Lineup:
C Olivo
1 Jacobs
2 Fontenot
3 Gordon
S Aviles
L Teahen/DDJ (one would be traded)
C Crisp
R Guillen
DH Butler
Are you telling me this isn't any better than last year? With this, we just dumped ALL of the fluff off the 25 man roster! ALL OF IT! GLOAD! GATHRIGHT! TPJ! And what did we add to the team to get rid of those 3? A guy who just hit 32 bombs, a guy with a 900 OPS who plays good 2B, and a slick fielding CF that just hit .450 in the playoffs. And what did we have to get rid of to makes these changes? Really? Just 2 middle relievers and an average OFer?
Sign me up for that. I just can't take the over-analyzing anymore.
Anyway we can change the name of this site to "The Fans of Rob Neyer?"

Pie no longer makes any sense
I’ve heard a rumor for Sean Marshall, but I have a hard time seeing that. Maybe Fontenot and a minor leaguer.
As for the lineup, sure its better – simply taking out Gload, Pena and Gathright would have accomplished that. The point is, is it the best move to turn us into contenders? I think a lot of the critics are suggesting it is not.

no.
BUT it puts us closer. And we’re taking baby steps here. Soon KC will be a destination for a high profile FA. Some stud guys who were drafted. And playoff appearances.

Initially, after the Crisp trade, I was thinking that Pie made no sense anymore, but now I'm not so sure
If you trade Teahen for Pie+, Pie is the Royals 4th OFer with good upside for the future. Crisp won’t be around forever and potentially Pie could take over for him. That move would be a nice addition to the Crisp move. Crisp = something more steady for the future. Pie = something more risky with big potential for the future. Pie + Cedeno would add a decent utility IFer. Pie + Fontenot (in exchange for Teahen+) adds a 2B upgrade.
I’m not saying I’m in love with Pie (I am, of course, in love with pie), and he isn’t the player I’d most love to have from the Cubs. But he does still have some significant value, both on the market and to the Royals.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

If the Royals acquire Pie
I’m going to pronounce his name “pie” instead of the correct “pee-ay”. With respect to him and his family, I love pie too much to call him pee-ay.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

haven't we been over how much that name rules?
I’m not sure on Cedeno… if he has legit potential to start, then yeah. But if he’s got a “better than TPJ” bat, then no. The Royals don’t need another “but he’s better than Gload/TPJ/Gathright” guy. Not as a throw-in for Pie.
Fontenot for Teahen might be a little unfair to the Royals, but might be acceptable (might also bite the Royals in the ass in a bit way). Cedeno as part of a deal with Fontenot would be good, imnsho, but not Pie and Cedeno.

I don’t disagree with that, except that his defense affects the analysis. Do the numbers say he’s a great defensive SS? Good, above average, average?

It would have to be Fontenot+ something for Teah, IMO. I’m not sure what the + would have to be. Getting Fontenot now is somewhat problematic because his market value is artificially inflated by 243 recent AB’s with gaudy numbers.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

agreed on Fontenot vs. Teahen
I’d just rather have him than either pie or cedeno. Fontenot + pie sounds best, Fontenot + Cedeno would be ok, and I wouldn’t do pie + cedeno. I can’t find much on cedeno’s defense… what little I have so far (still looking) suggests to me that it might be good, but not good enough to cover the bat.

Fontenot + pie sounds best
Agreed, but that’s probably too much for the Cubs to give up. Maybe Teahen+Pimental for Fontenot+Pie. Just a possibility.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I have a few more thoughts (or at least bits of information) on Cedeno
I still don’t know how I feel about Ronny Cedeno, but I found a few pieces of relevant information that make me feel better about him:
- Currently 25, will be 26 next season
- 97 wOBA+ in 2008
- in his two AAA seasons, his numbers were:
2005 (22) IWA/PCL .355/.403/.518 (265 PA)
2007 (24) IWA/PCL .359/.422/.537 (317 PA)
2008 was the second major league season in which Cedeno had significant AB’s. Those AAA numbers make it look like his decent 2008 season look like it was possibly for real.
And then there’s his defense. I didn’t look too deep. His 2008 RZR at SS would have been about middle of the pack for the 20 qualified MLB SS’s.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

The reason these trades don't make much sense
is that we could have easily replaced and improved upon, say, Gload, solely with in-house talent (Shealy or Kila) and used our available cash and trading chips to acquire true impact talent.
I will say that if Moore has no plans to sign or trade for any higher-tier talent than this, then it might actually make some sense to offer Teahen arbitration and retain him for one more year. $3 mil is a lot to pay for a 4th OFer, but all three members of our presumed opening day starting OF have a history of injuries, and I imagine Teahen would still see a fair number of ABs as well as acting as Guillen’s defensive replacement. If that were the case, I would forsee the following lineup, assuming a 12-man pitching staff:
C Olivo
1b Butler
2b Callaspo
3b Gordon
SS Aviles
LF DeJesus
CF Crisp
RF Guillen
DH Jacobs
Bench: Buck, Shealy, German, Teahen
If Teahen gets flipped, and it isn’t for someone like Pie, then I imagine Maier stays as the 4th OFer.

I realize that
But realistically, it doesn’t sound like Guillen will be riding the pine anytime soon, barring injury. The lineup I listed was not my ideal lineup, it is what I think it would most likely be at this point in time.

I agree
This is going to be a much improved offense and I’m excited for it. Am I wrong for thinking that we should be gunning for Rich Hill from the Cubs instead of Pie or Fontenot? Hill struggled last year but he seems to have the potential to be a dominant lefty. Just a thought.
Yes, I'm still alive. Sorry to disappoint you.

Rich Hill? Not for Teahen
Rich Hill is something of a reclamation project at this point. He’s a lot like Davies. Lots of talent but it is highly questionable if he’ll overcome his weaknesses and put it all together. Now if they want to do Teahen and a prospect for Fontenot and Rich Hill, I’d do it (depending on the prospect).
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
