OT: Interview with Sam Mellinger re: blogs v. traditional media
" It's in the best interest of both sides to co-exist, which is why it irritates me when members of each side get into this cyber pissing match (pardon the language), recycling old jokes and using fundamentally false arguments that went stale before there was wireless internet. Both sides are guilty of it, too."
(Sorry to toot my own horn here, but I'm so thrilled that Mellinger took the time to do this interview for me.)

Many thanks.
I am a terrible interviewer, which can be covered up if the subject has good things to say.
Sometimes, though, interviews are just garbage because I don’t know how to ask good enough questions (yet) and the subject doesn’t have much to say. This was not one of those times.

From Will Carroll's blogpost
There’s a lot of great writers out there, solid writers and thinkers and hard workers. In a crowd like this, you probably wouldn’t say “who?” if I mentioned Alex Belth, Matthew Leach, Aaron Gleeman, Eric Seidman, or Sam Mellinger. But is anyone the next Peter Gammons, or is that like asking who the next Sandy Koufax is? The next Tracy Ringolsby? The next Michael Lewis? (I have an idea about that …) And moreover, where will they be writing?
The rest of the piece is hilarious because Will is asserting how “in the know” he is.

I want to find the next Ring Lardner
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

How about the next Damon Runyon?

Speaking of KC Star blogs
Does anyone remember this debacle? The Star chose to endorse a Royals fan blog, and chose this guy. First of all, he lived in Atlanta. Second of all, he was a Braves fan, but said he would adopt the Royals. Third of all, it didn’t seem like he followed baseball all that closely, he was just an aspiring writer. Poop really hit the fan when he asked readers how they felt about 3B Mark Teahen. Then he corrected himself by saying Teahen was in LF. Finally readers corrected him and he had Teahen in RF. Then he didn’t post at all for weeks, leading many to believe he committed seppuku in shame. The Star finally dropped him.
Royals fans have some of the most interesting and diverse arrays of blogs out of any fanbase I have seen – and they chose this maroon.

at first it annoyed me, but then it all just shifted to curiousity and confusion

I do remember that
…and having almost the same reaction of, “why did did they choose this guy?”
On a separate note, good stuff in the interview, it was cool to read. I get the general impression that Mellinger is intent on never pissing anybody off, which I think showed a little in the interview, but for the purposes of the interview, it was a fun read.
I do wish Mellinger would be a little more hard-hitting, though. Not a lot, but a little.

There were a few things
he re-worded for the blog version of the interview. He was a bit more critical of some things in the original, which I can use in my term paper.
And I remember the royalsfan thing too. ’Twas quite silly/shameful/wtf.

Part II has been posted
Making Part II a separate fanshot was too shamelessly self-promotional. If someone else wants to fanshot, be my guest, but otherwise…it’s here.
I guess the best way to put it: those without press access are limited, just like those with press access who ignore the newer methods of analysis are limited. There’s a ton of information available out there for free, done well by people who do it for free, so the only way those of us who want to get paid for it can earn our money is by doing it better and using the advantages that we’re lucky enough to have.

We are all about self-promotion here
For example, I’m learning how to exorcise demons right now in seminary. I basically kick ass.
