Greg Schaum: Greinke Trade Possibility
This is Greg Schaum from 610 just thinking out loud here I think. Greinke for Jordan Schafer, Yunel Escobar, JoJo Reyes and Tyler Flowers. I don't know enough about these guys to say whether or not its a good deal. Do you?

I do know a lot about them..
Schafer i dont believe did all that well this year.. i know at some point he was suspended for performance enchancing drugs and i also know he is highly considered a cant miss prospect.. yunel is preety good although a terrible baserunner.. jojo Eh.. he’s alright he’s a tubby pitched well in the bigs for a little this year but then stunk.. and tyler flowers is absolutely tearing up the AFL or did… he had like 10 or 12 homers or something in a ridiculous short amount of time.. he was slugging over 2.000 lol
Was a wrong anybody ??

I would take that deal
As much as I don’t want to trade Zack.

the only thing i'd be concerned with
is that we’d need MLB ready starting pitching if we trade Zack.

why not start the trade with Thomas Hanson, then?
He’s a strong RH pitcher who has been tearing up pretty much every level of the minors (he spent last year in AA ball and did pretty well). He hands out a few too many walks and has had some homer issues, but his H/9 and K/9 lines have been extremely promising. Sickels likes him a lot, says he projects as a #2/3 starter. Hanson could probably start the year in Omaha, and if all goes well, be in the bigs later in the year. If we trade Greinke, then I don’t think we have to worry about contending (I don’t think we would contend with Greinke either, but whatever), but if we had Hanson and Cortes coming up to the bigs to start 2010, that would be a huge injection of talent into our rotation.
As for the folks Schaum names—Schafer’s PED use is a big red flag, but he actually put up a decent line in AA ball this year without the juice, and he seems to do everything pretty well. Flowers can hit, but there are a lot of questions as to whether or not his glove can stay at catcher, so I would not view him as the long-term successor to the current Buck/Olivo parade of mediocrity at the position. Escobar’s stats dropped off significantly from his excellent rookie year line, but would still be a productive SS for us and would allow Aviles to shift to 2b full time. I don’t know enough about Reyes to say much about him.
Ultimately, I’m not sure what to make of Schafer, even now that he is presumably off the juice. I will say that if Flowers could stick at catcher, I would deal Greinke for him, Hanson, and Escobar plus a throw-in.

They won't deal Hanson
Obviously I’d want him, but all indications are that the Braves won’t even consider dealing him.

Isn't JoJo Reyes pretty much MLB ready?

Any Greinke/Braves deal
Would have to start with either Hanson or Heyward at the top to get the feel of fair value for me. I’d prefer Hanson, add in Yunel Escobar, and I would take that deal today.
Schafer I’m not all that high on, but the OBP bump in CF after spending a year in AAA while Coco shits in our Cheerios seems reasonable.
I don’t really love Escobar, but he is supposedly an excellent defender and his OBP would be nice to have at #9 where we could theoretically use the 2 leadoff hitter theorem.
Reyes only redeeming quality for me is that he balances out a heavily right handed rotation.
Flowers is a right handed power bat, so that could work.
In general though, I’d much rather go for a 2-1 with either Hanson/Escobar or Hanson/Schafer (the latter we might have to give them another bullpen arm, which would be fine by me) than try for the quadruple attempt.
Last question, has there been any thought in the organization of trying to deal Meche?

I doubt they'd deal Meche
He has a limited no-trade clause and I think it would hurt your chances of signing future free agents. Teams don’t often sign a guy to a multi-year deal, have the guy have two great years, then deal him unless they are looking to dump salary.

I also think that Hanson/Escobar is probably on the low side for Greinke’s value. If I were the Braves, I’d be thinking…a future Cy Young winner for a decent shortstop and a prospect who could become a #3 starter? Yes, please.
I’d still hold out for Hanson/Escobar/Flowers. If that is too much, I’d add a low-level throw-in with Zack, but that is about as far as I’ll go.

The Braves think Hanson is a future #1

then they are the only ones who think so
Most of the folks I’ve read have said that Hanson’s ceiling is as a #2 starter.

I’d rather deal Greinke only for an impact player, not a bunch of "pretty good "players.

I've been thinking about trading Greinke and I keep remembering the
Beltran trade. We got squat for that. I don’t understand why we would trade our still very young ace for the people that have been listed in this post, as well as others. We would need to get good All-Star caliber players for him. I think we should hold onto our stars, not only for the team’s sake but for the fan’s sake as well.

no one wants to get rid of him or just trade him for trading's sake
but the Beltran deal illustrates the issue (although that was probably more difficult) — there was no way he was going to resign with KC for a price they could afford. With Boras as his agent, he was going to see what the open market would get him. KC probably should have done better in the trade, but that’s a separate issue… they weren’t going anywhere.
If Greinke doesn’t want to resign for a price the Royals can afford (in terms of being able to sign/resign other talent in the future, not making the Glasses money), they have to think about trading him and getting good players back while his value is still high (two cost-controlled years) for when they are in contention, not just holding on to him to maybe get to 83 wins in 2009. Or something. You know the deal.

maybe it goes deeper to a frustration
of ownership not ponying up to pay the going rate for studs, and a gut fear of managements not getting the best value out of a trade if one is made.

Just to build on devil fingers' point
Beltran is exactly the reason why we should trade Greinke no later than the ‘09 All Star break (although personally I like the idea of waiting until then, I think Greinke’s value could hit the stratosphere after the first half of next season). We got little in return for Beltran because he was a half-year rent-a-player.
If Greinke still won’t sign by the trading deadline, then you maximize your return. It’s all about sustainable development.
