Depth Chart

Has anyone else checked the Royal depth chart on their official site? Really interesting, in that it has been recently  updated and has some surprising info. Teahan is not a starter, displayed as more of a utilityman, true or not, might have more value if listed as a starter. I know, no GM is going to check the website, but this might be construed as the organizational perception.

Note the order of the pitching staff and who is included; the bullpen looks a little frightening in black and white. Take special note of the order of depth at 1B, C and 2B.

It might be argued that this is not relevant in that it is the off season and no thought has been included in such things as the order of depth. But that doesn't seem to be the case, as the OF appears to be very accurate in its construction.

That depth chart is total crap

Let me count the ways:

Mike Jacobs is not even listed on the depth chart—at any position.

Buck is still listed as the #1 catcher even though Hillman said a few weeks ago that Olivo will go into ST this year as the #1 catcher (although, in the depth chart’s defense, Hillman sucks so badly at communicating his preferences that Buck had no clue he had been bumped until Dick Kaegel called him, asking for comment on it).

I will be beyond stunned if German is our Opening Day starter at 2b. It is no secret that Moore wants to obtain a middle infielder somehow, and I don’t think he’d settle for starting someone like German to begin the season, especially when we have at least one in-house option (Callaspo) who is preferable.

And everybody and their mother knew that the acquisition of Crisp spelled the end of the Teahen-as-starting-OFer experiment. Nobody with half a brain will draw any conclusions about Teahen’s value based on a depth chart like this one.

I really hope that GMDM looks hard to deal Buck.

B. Pena looks like he could be a competent backup and Olivo was resigned. Teahen and Buck certainly look like two guys who should be in Dayton’s list of “guys who have been around the last couple years.”

What would Buck’s trade value be?

Buck is a serviceable, if unremarkable, #1 catcher

…and he is under club control until, I believe, 2010 for a relatively cheap price (he should get about $3 mil in arbitration this year, maybe a little more). We should be able to get a decent, B-level prospect for him.

He and Miggie are interchangeable, indistinguishable, and redundant. To pay $6+M for two

mediocre, unremarkable catchers is unwise. Deal one, keep the other and trade for, or develop their replacement .
