Not So Quick, My Friends
While I don't think KC general manager Dayton Moore ripped off FLA president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest by any means, I believe that the Royals got at least equal value in this relatively simple one-for-one trade.

In a vacuum
I think Jacobs is more valuable than Nunez. The question is, is he enough of an upgrade over Shealy/Kila/Butler to make this trade worthwhile? If he can get his OBA over .330, then yes, but I’m not very optimistic he can do that.

although I’m still not sure that Jacbos is better than Nunez in a vacuum. Again, go to stat corner. Check out Jacobs bRAA. Three years in Florida has him with a cumulative bRAA of 6.5.
Leo Nunez, 2008 in in KC pRAA (time off for injuries and all): 6.7

In a vacuum...
In a vacuum, I definitely think Jacobs is more valuable. He just seems like he could hold his breath longer.

I thought this was a very nice analysis
Of course they are all pretty much on the optimistic side of analysis goes, but in the off-season, why can’t Royals fans be optimistic?
There are obviously a lot more right-handed pitchers than lefties. We already have some really good hitters against lefties and struggled against righties. So this move seems like a damn good one in that aspect. Time will tell next season.

I can't remember
were the Braves 1990s offenses built on plodding power hitters with platoon problem who couldn’t get on-base or play defense?

In the interest of humility
At the “Inside the Book” blog, I made an (slightly) shortened version of my now-familiar Jacobs rant and asked if I was being unfair.
MGL (creator of of UZR and Super Linear Weights who has consulted for the Cardinals, among others), responded that I was, in fact, being unfair and overreacting. He has Jacobs making a massive improvement next year, and Nunez being an eminently replaceable reliever (although, as I’ve said elsewhere, Nunez isn’t really the point).
I hope he’s right, of course. I’m still not sure I see it, but this isn’t Dick Kaegel talking to Jacobs about getting just 10 more hits to get his OBP up to .320 (hilarious on many levels). Of course, it doesn’t address the issues about Butler and Kila, either. But if MGL’s projection comes true, then DMGM just made a hell of a deal, although I’m sure I’m being pretty fair in saying it wasn’t for exactly MGL’s reasons for liking Jacobs’ offense next year.
Still seems like that’s a sabermetric voice in the wilderness, though. A bit further down, another user named Rally, who I think is Sean “CHONE” Smith, gives a projection of Jacobs similar to mine, although he does say he could be the “new Brad Fullmer.” (Yes! As long as that doesn’t mean he’s going to fall apart physically and be out of the league after the season.)
So, while I’m still pessimistic: HOPE!

PS
Barring a great offer for Butler, I still think the best plan is play Butler every day in linen with what I and others have suggested. Against RHP, play Butler at 1B, and Jacobs at DH. Against LHP, Shealy at first and Butler at 1B.
Can the Royals sell Gload to the Ham Fighters?

I hope thats how it works out
that would also give us a nice late inning Pinch hitter on days we face lefties.
Accidentally not thedude925 anymore. I do hate this new name.

Wouldn't It Be
Nice to have Shealy (most of the time) or Jacobs (the rest of the time) lurking on the bench for late inning PH duty instead of Jason Smith?

It's good to see that this trade isn't all downside
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I just wish I could get a grip on how they (and anyone) evaluates relief pitchers
I look at Nunez’s last two seasons, and despite the injuries, he looks very good, but MGL has him slightly above replacement level…

You have to factor in how much he actually played in the majors in these two years
It was about 45 innings each season. That’s basically a LOOGY’s workload. It’s hard to make much of an impact in that kind of limited playing time.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
