Pimentel off, Dickerson and Taylor on.
Short scouting reports:
Joe Dickerson | RF | 22-years-old | 6-foot-1, 190 pounds
Acquired - 4th Round, 2005 | '08 Level - Wilmington (High A)
Vitals - .297/.376/.442, 48/31 K/BB, 24-for-38 SB
-Tweener outfielder with very good hit tool and good eye. Good speed underway, but doesn't translate well on the basepaths. Uses the gaps for extra base hits, enough strength to hit one out on occasion. Must keep hitting to remain prospect as he's likely locked into a corner spot.
Daniel Gutierrez | RHP | 21-years-old | 6-foot-1, 185 pounds
Acquired - 33rd Round, 2005 | '08 Level - Burlington (Low A)
Vitals - 4-4, 2.70 ERA, 90 IP, 104/25 K/BB, 1.78 FB/GB -Late round draft pick in '05 with electric arm. Fastball is in the low 90's and has been higher. Curveball is a plus pitch for him. Changeup self admittedly needs some work. Might have best mix of stuff and command in system.
Derrick Robinson | CF | 20-years-old | 5-foot-11, 170 pounds
Acquired - 4th Round, 2006 | '08 Level - Wilmington (High A)
Vitals - .245/.316/.322, 97/51 K/BB, 62-for-79 SB
-Absolute burner with exciting top of the order hit tools. Still learning the game after football was his #1 sport in high school, and thus hasn't shown much in the way of results yet. Can play defense, has a good arm, and projects for gap power much like Kenny Lofton or Shane Victorino (away from that tiny ballpark in Philly).
Tyler Sample | RHP | 19-years-old | 6-foot-7, 240 pounds
Acquired - 3rd Round, 2008 | '08 Level - Arizona (R)
Vitals - 0-5, 9.00 ERA, 27 IP, 39/29 K/BB, 2.60 FB/GB
-Huge frame with big time fastball/curveball combination. Changeup is a work in progress, as is command of all his pitches. Sample has huge upside but is light years away from helping out the Royals.
Jason Taylor | 1B/LF | 20-years-old | 6-foot-0, 200 pounds
Acquired - 2nd Round, 2006 | '08 Level - Burlington (Low A)
Vitals - .242/.372/.418, 97/81 K/BB, 40-for-54 SB
-Physical, athletic player with excellent plate discipline and projectable power. Very instinctual player, as noted by 40 SB's despite average at best speed. Likely will move to the outfield in the future.

Guti,
i went with Guti here basically cause i like him more than dickerson, even though dickerson and robinson could turn into some studs, i like Guti alot and he could really stand out next season i think./

eh...
i could go with several of them. I’ll take Sample on his best of group upside, but I really think he will flame out.
Dickerson
I take these fallball stats with a grain of salt. Most the scouts say the players are drained and going thru the motions.
It takes 46 muscles to frown but only 4 to flip 'em the bird.
drained and going through the motions = NOT GRITTY

I'd put Jason Taylor in the top 10
Patience, Power, Instincts, still young.

It appears that the scouting community really doesn't like him
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

The scouting community
doesn’t like Dickerson either. At least Taylor has power.
Taylor
When he wins his first MVP, I’m gonna gloat like nobody’s buisness.
Fair enough. I think it is interesting to note that his 20 YO low A numbers are very similar to Kila’s:
Kila – .246/.361/.431/.792
JT – .242/.372/.418/.790
Not that either of them will amount to a hill of beans, but it makes me wonder if scouts don’t give enough “extra credit” for plate discipline at a young age.

jason taylor speed
I didn’t realize that taylor had “average at best speed”, because I always saw his sb total and thought he had some speed. You would think that a player with good instincts would be loved by scouts. I bet they start lovin him when/if the power shows up.
taylor
I might have sold him a tad short on the speed at current, but with his build, he is not going to be more than average in a few years. He’s a pretty big guy, judging by pictures, the 200 pound listing is probably on the low side.
Rowdy Hardy Fan Club member.
Taylor is ginormous
I watched him in Burlington, IA last July. I cannot believe he’s only 20. I was surprised by his SB total….I didn’t realize he was fast until the beginning of the year.
Think about the potential in Taylor, though……legitimate power and speed potential in the COF. He could do better with the glove, but I think a slightly faster Pat Burrell could be his upside.

I love big guys who can run, but probably for the wrong reasons
Not that he was Seabiscuit or anything, but I remember seeing Adam Dunn (I think) run over a catcher on a double… it was awe inspiring.

Oops... Speaking of big guys who can run
I think we should take time out to note Alex Gordon’s rarely commented-upon efficiency when stealing bases: 14-18 last year, 9-11 this year. Wasn’t he something like 17-18 in AA?
Is he just smart, fast, or both?

Leadoff man!
Well, no, but it is validating my dream of him hitting between DDJ and Gordon next year.
Unless the Royals sign Edgar Renteria.

Hey now
I get the Renteria jokes . . . you can have Orlando Cabrera, Alex Cora, or Little Nicky Punto.
Fair enough, I'll take O-Cab

On second thought
Punto’s decent glove and non-horribleness with the bat kind of makes him a miniature version of Marco Scutaro. He might make some sense as a Plan C or D middle infield option — a short-term, inexpensive, switch-hitter with some on-base skills and decent defense who could complement Aviles and Callaspo.
What do you think of Callaspo's glove?
I know you like his bat, but (small sample size, etc. etc) his defense seems to have been really bad… I don’t know if the numbers I’ve seen were overly impacted by his time at SS or what, but it wasn’t pretty.

Really need more data on him
He was certainly below average overall last year, but he seemed adequate in his limited playing time before his DL stint but struggled defensively afterwards. While never tagged as a fielding star in the minors, BA and othersregarded his defense as decent to above average when he was coming up with the Angels, with the idea that he would fit best at 2B long-term. He clearly lacks extended range, but he does not look like a lost cause at getting to enough balls to hold down a steady job at 2B. There is potential that his glove at 2B could be average or slightly below average (-5 runs). If a clear middle infield upgrade does not materialize, I would be fine giving him the offseason to get things together (physically and otherwise) and then half a season as the regular 2B to see if he is a long-term option.
Agreed
nothing to lose by handing him the job for at least half of next year, especially with no other apparent options (assuming Orlando Hudson isn’t available for 3/40 or something).
