40 Man Roster

So, I just started looking @ the 40 man roster, and some space has to be made in a couple of weeks...They have to drop at lest 4 from the current 40 man roster next week....Maybe more if the elevate anyone to protect them from Rule 5 draft, or sign/trade for more players

Who do you think is going to be cut/demoted/however you want to phrase it?

I think you could easily trim...Ryan Braun, Jeff Fulchino, Yimmy Yobble, Grudz (Assuming he isn't offered), Jason Smith, Tony Pena Jr. without losing much talent off the MLB roster...If it were me, I'd trim Smith, Fulchino, Grudz & Pena...I THINK, they'll trim Smith, Braun, Grudz & Gobble...

Any thoughts?

Oops

I forgot about Hudson. He could well get the axe also…

by GoBabies!! on Nov 6, 2008 1:42 PM EST   0 recs

Guys to add:

From the Star:

Players previously identified by club officials as likely to be considered for protection: RHP Juan Abreu, RHP Greg Atencio, RHP Henry Barrera, OF José Duarte, LHP Dusty Hughes, RHP Blake Johnson, OF Chris Lubanski, SS Chris McConnell, OF Brian McFall, RHP Chris Nicoll and RHP Mario Santiago.

I’d probably add Johnson and Nicoll. Maybe Santiago and Atencio if there is room?

I don't think we have any 40-man issues.

Pitchers: Fulchino, Duckworth, Hudson, Newman, possibly Peralta,
Position Guys: Grudz, Smith, Pena Jr, Gload, Gathright (yeah, I think it’s time), Costa

That’s 11 guys we could mostly find equvalent replacements for (Grudz is an exception but he shouldn’t be coming back).

I'd add Lisson to that

I don’t see him getting selected in the Rule 5.

Duckworth and Lumsden?

Are we scarred to lose those guys? I could see them offering Ducky a minor league deal, but if he left, I wouldn’t be devastated. We’re almost going to have to try dumping Gload, aren’t we?

Yes, I'm still alive. Sorry to disappoint you.

by royaldaddy on Nov 6, 2008 2:08 PM EST   0 recs

yes on Gload

Duckworth is nice, but minor league deal should do it. Lumsden, Moore might want to hang on to the fact that he traded for him and he was supposed to be good? I wouldn’t be upset losing him.

I'd cut

Fulchino
Hudson
TJ
Perralta
Fulchino (did I put him on there twice?)
Bale (try to get a cheaper contract with him than the $2.2 they were talking about)
Lisson?
Costa?
Braun?

Keep Ducky and Lumsden. Keep Newman (he could become a cheap bullpen LHP)

Peralta might be a good idea for a minor league deal

he had a terrible year, but was decent in ’07. Low-risk

OMG Banny. FWIW I am only crdtng u w/3 runs allwd bc of DDJ OMFG

i think Peralta is arb-eligible

so I’m not sure how offering a minor league contract would work…

by KC Chris on Nov 6, 2008 2:44 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

anyone know if this is correct

or would we need to dfa him first?

Don't Stop Believing!

by KC Chris on Nov 6, 2008 2:53 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

He is arb eligible

You would non-tender him, making him a free agent, then offer him a minor league deal. He could, of course, reject it and sign with someone else.

Why keep Lumsden?

He stinks. I wouldn’t get rid of him, but you don’t need to keep him on the 40 man roster. I doubt another team would claim him.

because you can cut enough without giving him up.

True

If I were Dayton, I’d also be scouring the waiver wire looking for free talent that gets dumped by other teams.

Lumsden

I’d keep him around if there is room…yea he has sucked, but if you’ve seen him pitch you’d know that keeping him is an option. He’s still up to 95 with his fastball and has a dang good curve when commanding it (this is the problem).

It’s not likely, but maybe he could be another Matt Thornton.

by doublestix on Nov 6, 2008 5:16 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

yeah

doesn’t he have some small amount of potential as a bullpen arm?

Accidentally not thedude925 anymore. I do hate this new name.

by wildthang on Nov 6, 2008 6:14 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

When was Lumsden throwing 95 last year?

I saw him pitch a couple times and he was in the low 90’s (89-91) and he looked like he was throwing batting practise.

It takes 46 muscles to frown but only 4 to flip 'em the bird.

Practise=Practice

What are we talkin about Practice

Make Lumsden a reliever immediately

Or did they do that already? I forget.

I'm about to change my username to DannyDuffyfan

by jackie ballgame on Nov 6, 2008 5:49 PM EST   0 recs

They tried it late in the season

….and he still got shelled.

Lumsden must go, and now.

by Royals Nation on Nov 6, 2008 10:35 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Did he have some sort of injury?

Or has he just lost his mechanics? Or has he just lost it in general?

40 Man Roster

Pitchers: Greg Atencio, Brian Bannister, Henry Barrera, Ryan Braun, Jose Capellan, Jairo Cuevas, Kyle Davies, Zack Greinke, Luke Hochevar, Devon Lowery, Tyler Lumsden, Ron Mahay, Gil Meche, Neal Musser, Chris Niccol, Julio Pimentel, Ramon Ramirez, Carlos Rosa, Mario Santiago, Joakim Soria, Robinson Tejada

Catchers: John Buck, Miguel Olivo, Brayan Pena

Infielders: Mike Aviles, Alberto Callaspo, Esteban German, Alex Gordon, Mike Jacobs, Kila Ka’aihue, Mario Lisson, Ryan Shealy

Outfielders: Shane Costa, David DeJesus, Jose Duarte, Joey Gathright, Jose Guillen, Mitch Maier, Mark Teahen

I added players that I thought might be protected and took off those who should be let go. The flaws to this roster construction really become front and center (the surplus – 4th OF’s, 1B’s/ the absence of Middle infield depth, and starting OF’s other than DDJ, Guillen. )

by lordbyronk on Nov 9, 2008 11:03 AM EST   0 recs

Looking at their respective three year stats

I’m not sure how Jose Guillen is considered a starter if Mark Teahen isn’t.

OMG Banny. FWIW I am only crdtng u w/3 runs allwd bc of DDJ OMFG

by devil_fingers on Nov 9, 2008 1:44 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

I realize Guillen

was a generous addition as a starter. I guess I was just figuring due to dollars, he’s considered a starter. He could be traded too, who knows?

by lordbyronk on Nov 9, 2008 3:39 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Oh, OK

Sorry ‘bout that. I thought you were doing "here’s what I would do" rather than “here’s what I think the Royals are going to do.”

Makes sense.
