Jose Guillen for Luis Castillo?
I know this has been discussed here before, but this is the first time I've seen it as an official rumor, and not idle speculation by Tim Dierkes. Of course, its ESPN so it could very well still be idle speculation.
The Royals and Mets discussed a Jose Guillen-for-Luis Castillo deal during the regular season and could revive those talks in the offseason. Castillo's past his prime and would block speedster Alberto Callaspo from the second-base job.

"Speedster" probably says it all abou tthis rumor's reliability
Still, this isn’t a great deal, but might not be so bad. The Royals save $6 million on the face of it, and defer some of the money. At worst, maybe they can spin Castillo for a B- or C+ prospect and take a chunk of his salary and still start Callaspo. If they need to play him a little while (and it’s not clear to me that Callaspo would be as good as Castillo, even now, although he deservse the chance), try to before trading him again.
Even the $6 million saved migth bring in Juan Rivera or someone like that as a Guillen-replacing stopgap.

I'd want the Mets to kick in some money
We’d have to save more than $6 million to make this deal worth it.

Maybe
I’d want KC to save more money, too, but maybe they can turn around and flip Castillo for beans and only take half his contract ($9 million). SO they save $6 million on the initial trade, and around $9M on the second. That should be enough to bring back Emil Brown to platoon with Shane Costa in left.

Two reasons why this rumor is false
OBP: .355
SLG: .305
Neither of those fit into the plan.

i wouldn't mind this happening...
we move Guillen and get someone we can get rid of. Quicker. That’ll help!

he SLGs .305?
Wow, talk about a singles hitter. If they royals do this trade and then pick up Juan Rivera, i’d be pretty happy with the overall return the Royals get.

Actually, I don't think this trade is absolutely horrible
But it’s less than ideal given our surplus in MIF’s. (Yes, I know we only have 2, but that’s plenty since both project as everyday/bonafide big-leaguers under precious team control).
Anyway, Castillo’s going well into his 30’s. A sub-.300 SLG is likely next year. Ugh. At least we would be filling a spot with Guillen on the roster.

I agree
There is not a clear need for Castillo. He’s basically a more expensive older version of Callaspo (little power, more OBP), but if it frees up some dollars to take a chance on a mid tier FA outfielder like Juan RIvera. The trade would be worth it. If Castillo has a great first half, he could be flipped at the deadline, and we could go back to playing Callaspo. What are the chances Guillen could be flipped at the deadline?
