Dayton Moore Channeling Bill Bavasi
What an example of Bavasi-style results based analysis. Despite HoRam's lack of overall pitching skills, Bavasi thought HoRam was an unpolished gem because HoRam had some success in Atlanta. Predictably, HoRam stinks it up in Seattle so badly even Bavasi lets him go.
HoRam hooks up with KC on a minor league contract and stumbles into a lucky streak. Moore then trades him to the White Sox, and I'm thinking Moore's showing signs of a few functioning synapses when Moore takes the opportunity to flip HoRam to Kenny Williams based on a lucky streak. But no ..... it appears that Moore actually thought Ramirez was as good as his results in KC last year.

While I think Moore overpaid somewhat for H. Ramirez
…this was not one of his awful moves. H. Ramirez was genuinely good as a reliever. Going forward, I think he likely will be pretty good as a reliever. As a reliever, he was able to focus on his best three pitches and that made him much more effective.
Of course they keep talking about using him as a starter, which would take him for a mild positive to likely a big negative.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Good points
Personally, I think the rotation talk is just talk to keep younger guys like Hochevar and Davies on edge in the offseason so they know that a starting spot is not guaranteed. That said, I thought the same when we signed Tomko last year to a similar and that turned out to be a disaster both in the rotation and the bullpen. But if there is a silver lining, the Royals figured that one out pretty quick and I think Horacio Ramirez is better equipped to be successful pitching out of the bullpen than Tomko was. In all, I think this a low-risk, moderate reward signing. But don’t get me started on Farnsworth.
Waiting for April.

I won't get you started
I mean, is there ANYONE that thinks the Farnsworth signing was a good move?
I predict that, before 2009 is over, Royals fans will begin using the term “Farnsworthed” to describe either tremendous lapses in judgment (“I really Farnsworthed myself on having those five extra tequila shots.”) or just a situation in general that is clearly a gross overpayment for something of questionable value (“Man, my mechanic really gave me a Farnsworth with that tune-up I supposedly needed.”)

yes
what’s frightening is that the Professor is not mentioned once in the “analysis.” I mean, frightening for us, or, as Keith Law put it when discussing the Jacobs’ trade, “terrifying.” I suspect that Keith may be died of fright. yesterday morning.

Good thing he's already penciled into the rotation
Wait, you mean he isn’t?

He is penciled into the starting rotation
The same way Miguel Olivo was guaranteed the starting catching job in 2008.
Oh, it was just a miscommunication!

I really don't know what to make of it
It’s hard to focus as I’m still upset that we selected Julio Lugo in the Rule 5, when we could have gone for a pitcher.
How awesome would a Zackary Greinke/Zachary Kroenke combo have been?

We didn't select Julio Lugo
We selected Roberto Luongo, which doesn’t make sense at all since he’s a hockey player.

Was Zack mostly a pitcher or mostly a SS in HS?
just don’t know much about his pre-Royals life. Could he have been a prospect as a position player (assuming that no one would look at him as a pitcher).
Just curious

yes
He played SS on the days he didn’t pitch. Signed to be a two way player at I THINK Clemson. Would have been a top 5 round pick as a position player as well.

thank god the Royals didn't lose him to nuclear physics
More and more, I’m thinking (post-2006) that the “Spaceman Zack” thing is a little bit of an act, and he’s smart enough to know that it just makes him that much cooler.
Zack — if you’re going to leave, just be an asshole, or, failling that, a generic dude like Gil Meche (I love ya, Gil, but Mr. Personality you ain’t). Don’t make it harder than it has to be.

If Ramirez
has a decent season (as a reliever), we gave two and a half months of him for a good low level prospect, then got him back.

Could we keep this in the Winter GM meeting page please?
A page was created for ALL the winter meetings things and this needs to move to it.

It should be there, remember?

Given that...
the two Winter Meetings threads are over 1000 comments total, I think it’s about time we started dividing up the topics of conversation to help keep things straight. I don’t know about anyone else, but I don’t want to have to keep scrolling down that much.
