Jason Smith the First to Fall
I refuse to call it the end of the Jason Smith era, because there's a 97.3% chance he's playing for Omaha next year, and thus will have his contract purchased again at some point in 2009.

Hear hear!
I recommend Omaha to LOTS of people; all kinds of people…but not to Jason Smith.

One thing about Jason Smith that no one can deny
He had the most “pop off the bench” of any major leaguer with a career SLG of .377.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

a part of me still thinks he could have had Aviles's fluky 08 run

Despite the fact that he had a major league track record of consistent failure?

I guess my one bit of "old-school" thinking
is that a guy needs an extended stretch of real playing time to demonstrate his ability
looking at Smith’s MLB data the closest thing to that I see is in 2004, when he got 163 PAs with the TIgers. he did slug .432 at comerica that year

c'mon,
one game ought to be enough, just ask Hillman. 0-3 and done.

![Fresh on the heels of my award-winning 2008 Royals O-Swing Percentage Graph, here is a graph the O-Swing (percentage of pitches swung at outside of the strike zone) for all the teams of the AL Central from 2005-2008 by year, also compared to the MLB average. Remember -- this is for hitters, so lower is better.
(Maybe I [or someone else, of course] will do something like this for pitchers next week).
The results speak for themselvs, I guess, but they are saying all sorts of things. Discuss and enjoy!
For a larger version, click here (opens in new tab/window).
Consider this a humble appendix to the "Secrets of the AL Central" series.
