Daniel Cabrera?

Why not sign Daniel Cabrera?  He was just nontendered by Baltimore.  He throws hard, he is right handed....hmm...I wonder what a  hard throwing right hander with bad performance is worth on the open market...

Id much rather take a chance on Cabreras bad performance and hard throwing than throwing away $5 million/yr on Farnsworth.  Even with the Farnsworth deal done, I'd like to take a chance to see what McClure could do with Cabrera and his immense ability.

if nothing else...it gives us a better shot in the two gamese hed pitch against us....

AND he’s huge…team him up with Farnsworth and we’ll win any bench clearing brawl

Is it a bad sign for our position players

If we’re beefing up the pitchers to handle the brawls?

by BrRoyal on Dec 15, 2008 7:13 AM EST up reply actions

I agree

If you can get him cheap, maybe he can put it together at the back of the rotation or in middle relief.

Hoo boy

I really don’t like this idea. Having seen Cabrera pitch a couple times a year, and as someone who follows the O’s quest for a .500 year somewhat regularly….Cabrera’s career walk rate is 5.1 per 9. And he lost 1.4 MPH off his fastball last year. That’s a big “stay away” sign.

i was out of town for the past couple weeks and hadnt seen much….

Huh. I thought was the one who was saying "well, he wouldn’t be so bad on a 1/7 or something) (that was before I saw the projections).

SC from Camden Chat

is of the opinion that Mazzone got fired over D-Cabs. Talk about a waste.

I agree that Cabrera likely will continue to suck

But for a cheap, low-risk, one-year deal to attempt a reclamation project, it makes sense. If you can’t get him for a cheap, low-risk deal, then forget about him.

I mean, heck, if HoRam

has a shot at the rotation….then yeah, sign up Cabrera.

by NHZ on Dec 14, 2008 6:54 PM EST up reply actions

He is risky in the same way HoRam is

I’m not too scared about HoRam in the bullpen, but I think he’s a big liability in the rotation. I feel the same way about Cabrera. If I picked him up, it would be to turn him into a hopefully good reliever.

The immoderate moderator

by Scott McKinney on Dec 14, 2008 6:57 PM EST up reply actions

Not trying to be snarky,

but you DO know how bad Cabrera’s control is, right? At least HoRam threw strikes as a reliever. I’m not sure there’s any evidence Cabrera could. His FIP was 5.61 last year, on top of everything else.

by NHZ on Dec 14, 2008 6:58 PM EST up reply actions

Reclamation projects always have serious problems

He has a serious control problem. Being able to get strikeouts, while at the same time having control problems is a common profile of pretty good relievers (and more than a few that are better than just pretty good). I don’t think he’s going to ever be a decent starter again. But if he’s used as a reliever, he could get a couple mph back on his fastball and he can also stick to throwing his best two pitches. Does that mean he’d likely become a good reliever? No, but it makes him worthy of a cheap, low-risk contract.

I wouldn't pay $4 million for the type of risk we're talking about

Stathead, Zack Greinke fan, and Rock Band 2 singer extraordinaire.

by NHZ on Dec 14, 2008 7:40 PM EST up reply actions

i dont think anyone advocates taking a $4 million risk like this....

except Dayton….with Cabrera I think everyone’s talking league minimum up to no more than 1.5-2 million…which would be money far more well spent than 9.25 to Farnsworth

TPJ...you're dead to me

by billybeingbilly on Dec 14, 2008 8:11 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

If $4M is what he costs, then i wouldn’t consider it for a second. I was thinking more like $1M. His market value may well be better than that. If so, let someone else overpay for him.

by Scott McKinney on Dec 14, 2008 10:13 PM EST up reply actions

$4 million is likey what he would've got in arbitration

Stathead, Zack Greinke fan, and Rock Band 2 singer extraordinaire.

by NHZ on Dec 15, 2008 3:03 AM EST up reply actions

Ok

But that doesn’t mean that is what his value is on the open market (particularly in this market). Often there is little relationship between arbitration award and actual FA market value (Jimmy Gobble is going to prove that in about a month). But I’m not saying I have a good idea what Cabrera’s market value is going to be. For all I know, multiple teams are hungry for him and he’ll go for $4M. Or maybe there’s next to no interest and he can be had for a song. I’m just saying that if I were a GM, I’d offer him a small guaranteed contract. My offer would probably be less than $1M with significant incentives based in innings pitched. If that isn’t enough to get him, then I’d wish him luck in his future endeavors.

by Scott McKinney on Dec 15, 2008 3:21 AM EST up reply actions

Yes, I know.

I should have clarified. I just see Cabrera’s “great stuff” as enough of a selling point that he might be able to get around his arb figure.

without looking at the histories

didn’t Robinson Tejada have a similar backstory

bad control as a starter, etc.

this is my thing...theres no harm in pulling someone off the scrap heap...

and trying to harness his obvious ability…but its a whole different story when that scrap heap quality find is one of your highest paid players…while being a middle reliever

Pass

Guys that wild don’t often suddenly figure it out. And I don’t think he’ll be all that cheap, there will likely be some demand from pitching starved clubs.
